Resources required to perform such a feat..
I would expect that the resources that would be required (for the equipment and the expertise) to make a serious attempt at this are out of reach for most. I'm sure the likes of organizations such as the NSA have already attempted this, but as to whether or not they had any success..well I'm sure that information is classified.

Wi-Fizzle Research..yeah it's a lame domain name :/Well, first off, the basic principle to consider here is that for the best possible test of the system you want the stuff you test with to be as close to the real deal as possible. Ideally a person eating the astronaut food, living in free-fall - but that would be too expensive - regular old terrestrial human piss is probably good enough.
Now, consider the alternatives you've suggested and how they compare on a practical level and in terms of cost to NASA's solution...
Synthetic: there's the difficulty and cost of producing it in the first place, as well as the difficulty of ensuring that it really is accurate enough for the test. Wasted effort, essentially, since the real thing can be got for free and is pretty certain to be close enough to what'll be produced in space...
Likewise for animal urine - there's the cost of keeping the animals and collecting the specimens - plus of establishing that the test really is testing what you want to test - whether the system is appropriate for human use.
Comparatively, human piss is already exactly what you want to test the system with - maybe it'll be a bit different due to the different conditions, but you know it's basically the same stuff. And the cost of getting it is very small - all you need is a little cooperation from the staff.
So for more money you can test in a way that may or may not be an adequate simulation of the conditions under which the spacecraft toilet will be used. So what's the point?

shoulda woulda coulda
A web application should be cleaning up after each transaction to arrive at a safe state; why wouldn't a web server do the same? If it doesn't, it should.
Ya, and people should always wear their seatbelts, never drink and drive, and floss everytime they brush their teeth; Yet, the majority of humans fail to abide by these 3 simple "should haves".
Maybe you should write a howto covering how you think a web server should behave, and then proceed to write your own implementation from scratch (for my network programming class I had to do this, in C++ with my own sockets library).
Oh, and nevermind the fact that the web server may not have any state information.
I'm sure you're just another troll or BOFH wannabe anyways.
c'ya and good luck, buck.

How about creating a LAN over the power lines in your residence?

Little People?
Note: Yes, this is off topic. Please accept my apologies in advance.
> others I know in the industry would not be able to reach it while standing on their desks and jumping.
Lets say the average desk is roughly 30 inches tall.
6.5 ft. is 78 inches
78 in. - 30 in. = 48 in., which is 4 feet. Assuming these little tykes have a vertical leap of at least 1 foot , they would have to be no more than 3 ft. tall! Either you know some 2 year olds who are "in industry" or you know some little people who are littler than I've ever heard of.
Do "little people" really come that small? If they do ..it's news to me.

As a graduate of Addison Elementary..
I must say the fact that the PTA would even consider this is quite a surprise, and to be blunt, rather appalling. IIRC, the homework at Addison was composed primarily of 2 things:
- pages of arithmetic
- reading simple/easy books (I mean they were simple then..of course
;)
Bottom line: It's pretty sad that they're actually considering this...may God help us all. heh.

My New Favorite Neologism: capiXtreme (aka 'extreme capitalism') -
Microsofts Business Tactics
If M$ continues the trend of insane prices and extortion, Apple might get the opportunity to do a little extorting of its own. I think the real question which we're beating around the bush on here is this: How long is it going to take for an open OS with a real chance of taking out either of these closed and unfriendly giants to emerge? I love Linux, but I don't see it catching on many of the average windows-trained users anytime soon
:/As chance would have it, this morning I came up with a suitable neologism for describing the business practices of the likes of Microsoft: capiXtreme
(n.) capiXtreme (abusing a market monopoly to extort assets from clients and use recovered assets in the production of further assets)
(adj.) capiXtremic, (of or relating to capiXtremism or capiXtremics) "a capiXtremic corporation" ; "capiXtremic methods and incentives are the only considerations"
(n.) capiXtremism, (the practice of employing capiXtreme or capiXtremic strategies, policies, or measures) "Microsoft's core business model revolves around capiXtremic strategies that place profits ahead of everything, regardless of what state the organization is in or what the resulting impact will be on the surrounding environment and ecosystems."

Beware of the over-complicators gloves maytee
It seems to me that the energy savings would be more beneficial to whoever pays the bill on the huge server farms rather than individual "normal people" who have a small ethernet running at their house or small business and whatnot. I hope they will shift away from this and focus on another area where they can actually make a difference that would noticeably benefit everyone; I especially like the idea of improving power supply efficiency (which is a bigger problem that just ethernets, IMO). One way to do this would be to get devices running directly off of direct AC current. IIRC, you can avoid a 20% penalty hit incurred from during the conversion from AC->DC that you get with normal power supplies.
Beware of the gloves of the over-complicators :p

Integrated graphics..
That sounds great and all, and the AI that the article mentions really does sound interesting...but I am not clear on how a processing unit for extremely specialized tasks is going to translate into significant performance gains? Is the current generation of CPU not optimized for mathematic operations? This seems the most direct way to get the best all around performance, to me. Also, isn't it kind of sucky to make the processor only good at a few good things rather than fast in a diverse range of applications?
If anyone can give me any insight here...please speak up.
Thanks

Why is this getting any publicity..?
Mark this post as a troll if you wish, but we all know the real trolls here are the ones who are giving this issue so much attention. By discussing this article, we aren't really accomplishing anything positive..other than giving some clown free publicity and possibly some rabble-rousing. Bong hits 4 Jesus? But will they follow through with it?
Lets slow down for a second and ask ourselves
who is going to encourage everyone else to get on the data portability bandwagon?"
Well, whoever stands to gain the most from having users which can come and go as they please. I should acknowledge that I realize this kind of portability would be beneficial to both Google and web users in general. However, I don't see this going over so well with the likes of Yahoo and Hotmail (I don't want to pay an annual fee to prevent my account from being deleted or deactivated, dagnabit!). One could make a fairly good argument that google has some of the best-in-class services on the web, and they know it.
It will be interesting to see if/how they follow through on this. I would be much more comfortable using some of their services if I knew I could do an XML or equivalent type data dump and leave if I felt the need.

Don't be so quick to give it up
Generally, it has been my experience that people are completely willing to give up very private information whenver demanded by a company or similar seemingly legitimate and authoritative entity. I encourage everyone to be more wary and careful about who they give their SSN to. Identity theft has become a rampant problem for many people all over the world. We have to wise up and Just Say No.

The kind of company..
that isn't driven to make all the money possible as soon as possible. Part of the reason CraigsList is so popular and people appreciate/use it so much is because they aren't a bunch of sell outs who will spam you with ads at every possible opportunity.
Also, sometimes when running a business, the best place to be is not necessarily the "biggest" and/or "most visible" place to be. Not every company dreams of or wishes to aspire to growing into some kind of huge behemoth like Wal-Mart.

Pros:- It's much less expensive (as long as your time isn't worth much)
- You will get in better shape
Cons:- Requires you to exert effort
On second thought, I must stop and ask how well this will catch on; I am afraid we'll be doomed to be on the fringe forever.

Happy Valley?
That's always been the nickname for Utah Valley, here in Utah
;)
From what I understand, it was given that term because Utah Valley is one of, if not the, highest per-capita consumption of anti-depressants in the United States. Hence, Happy Valley; Seems like a horrible name for a TV series though...

Re:Good
You are disappointed in Google? Are you sure that you understand what their situation/predicament is? They simply do NOT have the option of providing an uncensored search engine in Chine at this time, so it is either a censored Google or no google at all. I don't know about you, but I will take whatever I can get. At least now they have a foot in the door.

They call it an "Accident"
We have had SBC Yahoo DSL at home for about 6 or 7 years now. A few years ago when comcast was "upgrading" our cable service for HDTV, their crew managed to cut through the telephone line buried in the ground outside our house, which killed our internet and phone service! I think they train them to do that. In the time it took SBC to come and repair it, we could have potentially switched over to cable?
is this what they were thinking?
Argh i give up! Those conniving small minded cable companies :X

targeting on the radio.....dot...dot...dot...
I read TFA, but im still not clear on how they plan on using the radio to target listeners in a way which would be different from the current advertising schemes. Obviously, when you search on google, they can use your query to deliver targeted relevant advertising results. However, with radio, the only information they have is that a quantity of people are listening to a specific frequency.
Clearly, I must be missing something. Right?
