Re:Misuse of the word "literally"
Well, yes, the word is being mis-used in its truest form...but over time, language can and does change. Purists will put up a fight, but even they will be turned, over time.
Other words that have "lost" their meaning:
factoid (FAK-toid) noun
Unverified or inaccurate information that is presented in the press as factual, often as part of a publicity effort, and that is then accepted as true because of constant repetition.
enormity (i-NOR-mi-tee) noun
1. The quality of passing all moral bounds; excessive wickedness or outrageousness.
2. A monstrous offense or evil; an outrage.
3. (Usage Problem) Great size; immensity.
fulsome (ful-sum) adjective
1. Offensively flattering or insincere.
2. Offensive to the taste or sensibilities.
3. (Usage Problem) Copious or abundant.
as well as... sycophant, notorious, and fortuitous.

Here are some other anagrams of NO MEAT:Thanks to This Site, you can find all of the anagrams of TMA-1:
A ME TON, A ME NOT, A MEN TO, A MONTE, A MET NO, A MET ON, MANE TO, AMEN TO, MEAN TO, NAME TO, TAME NO, TAME ON, MEAT NO, MEAT ON, MATE NO, MATE ON, TEAM NO, TEAM ON, AM TONE, AM NOTE, MA TONE, MA NOTE, MAN TOE, MAO TEN, MAO NET, TAM ONE, TAM EON, MAT ONE, MAT EON, AN ME TO, AN TOME, NATO ME, ANT MOE, TAN MOE, NAT MOE, OAT MEN, TAO MEN, AT ME NO, AT ME ON, AT OMEN, AT MOEN
I can find significance in at least a dozen of these, especially when I comparing them to all the characters and events out there in literature and mythology. For example, MEAT ON is the opposite of NO MEAT. "AMEN TO"--TMA-1 symbolizes God, because God is the 1 you say AMEN TO. I could go on, but we all get the picture.
I used to believe that if you played heavy metal music backwards, you would here satanic messages. Then, I just realized how good people are at finding patterns in noise and making associations.
In my opinion, it is really petty for an author to complain about a review, and down-right childish to make that last personal attack on Cliff. Somewhat ironic, too, because Cliff claimed that Wheat misinterpreted 2001 and found meaning where there was none. In response, Wheat claims that Cliff misinterpreted his own work. Wheat is a relativist when he writes about others, but not when others write about him. BTW, LEONARD and ALDERON are anagrams as well. What do you make of that?

NO MEAT, HUH?
This dude missed a few TMA-ONE interpretations:
-
NATO ME - the monolith is discovered in the Cold War posturing between the West and the Iron Curtain, and this is Kubrick's way of downing Communism
-
A MONTE - referring to a popular game show at the time, and that the monolith was at various times in the movie under a curtain marked number two, and behind a door marked number three
-
OAT MEN - Quaker paid Kubrick for subliminal advertizing
Check all the others here

Re:Non-draconian filtering
Ah, the embarrassment argument. It hinges on the premise that kids wouldn't be embarrassed to ask some random authority-figure adult for permission to legitimate topics. However legitimate topic include information about birth control, abortion, or sexually transmitted disease.
A friend of mine who works for a certain company that produces a firewall-style filter product (We'll call them "Oak In" - thank you internet anagram server) said he got a call from a polite gentleman in Texas who said that the product wasn't working.
So my buddy asks him why he thinks that, and the guy says, "I looked at my logs and I saw that they were going to gay.com." So he looks up the site, which turns out to be a community site - Not pornography-related at all. The individual was quite taken aback. I guess he has such a strong aversion to gay porn that the thought that he might end up looking at a frontpage for a site full of it would scorch the eyes right out of his head, or similar.
Given that we know these attitudes exist in people, I think it's highly likely that people will fail to get information they need because it is inappropriately blocked, because they'll be too shy to ask.
On the other hand, it's nice to know that this major company was good enough to not block that site.
