Alternatives to Kazaa
I quit using Kazaa many months ago. There are a ton of alternatives out there. However, many of them suck. In my opinion, these are the best:
Blubster - This is what I use. Selection is good. Speed is excellent.
WinMX - Pretty good. Selection is excellent. Speed and availability are not good.
Xolox - Excellent Gnutella client with NO SPYWARE. Selection is excellent. Speed is excellent (it can download from multiple sources at once). -
Windows
For Windows users:
There's an Open Source project hosted on Sourceforge called Gnucleus. Here is the project page.
It supports multiple hosts download, so if you were an user of Xolox, but want a client that development still continues and you want to get those large files using multiple connections, get it now. Sadly, download of partial files from other hosts is still not possible (since there's no consensus from the Gnutella protocol developers about how this should work).
Gnucleus even has a LAN mode, so you may run it to share files over your network that has locked ports or net access blocked (great for colleges!). -
Too late...From http://www.xolox.nl:
Dear XoloX-user, Taking into account the latest law suits against p2p clients based on Fasttrack-technology (such as Kazaa), we have decided to discontinue XoloX. As of the 1st of december, XoloX will be shut down and removed from distribution sites. We hope everybody has enjoyed XoloX as long as it has been around and we want to use this opportunity to thank everybody who made a contribution to its development. These last few days will give you some time to finish your downloads and we advise you not to start new transfers. Thanks again and goodbye! --Team XoloX--

Re:I just tried thismorpheus works just fine for me (win2k, xp) it crashes occasionally (rarely), but it doesn't matter - the downloads are continued when you start it up again...
if you have a broadband connection and you're looking for a good gnutella client, try Xolox it does simultaneous, restartable downloads. it's not as good as morpheus for identifying identical content, and the gnutelly network doesn't support the rich metadata that morpheus has, but it's the best gnutella client i have found, nothing fancy..

Xolox
GNUTella still kicks ass... better than Napster ever was at least. You can get faster more reliable downloads with the Xolox , which uses multi-source segmented downloading among other advanced file transfer features that make using the GNUTella network highly effective! The client basically downloads the same file concurrently from multiple sources, giving you greater overall transfer rates. The only problem with Xolox is that it currently only has a MS Windows port.
GNUtella is open, free, and it works great! Forget about these commercial closed networks. -
Already
A quick search on Xolox reveals several files named things like “Michael Jackson - You Rock My World.mp3” -- but I have not verified them, as my life is a Michael-Jackson-free zone.
