Re:Mistrust but Verify
There's something else very fishy here. There are already a number of products on the market that do the same thing as both of these products: for example, as well as this.
IIRC, the condition of "prior art" will negate a patent, as will simply not defending a patent in court. Since the patent specifies "an MP3 player" and not "a 60 gig iPod Photo," products which do exactly the same thing for a shuffle or a mini should negate the patent strictly on the enforcemeent clause. By the way, I've bought one of each of these, and they both totally suck. The FM transmitters are basically useless. They do keep it charged, though. -
Re:Genuine I-Pod question
You can charge the iPod in serveral ways. You can use the USB2 cable, or the FireWire cable included with the iPod to charge it. All you have to do is plug it into your computer, and it will charge automagically.
It also comes with a power adapter, into which the FireWire cable plugs. (There's actually a female FireWire port on it.)
The dock is just extra. The USB2 or FireWire cable plugs into the back of the dock, and the iPod is inserted into it. It does the same thing as plugging the iPod directly into your computer does, except also has a Line Out jack on it, so you can hook it up to a stereo.
For your problem, though, all you really need to do is buy a car charger. -
Re:It's not RAID, but ...
what I'd love to see is an Xraid mini as it were. something with much of the managability of the full size xraid, but not as much redundancy. so perhaps a nice desktop case (to match the g5 *of course*:) that could take 4 or 5 sata disks in hot swap caddies (maybe the same caddies as in the xraid) with a hardware raid controller on board for striping, mirroring and raid 5. a single gig ethernet on the back and then fw400 and 800 ports.
Basically you want an xserve raid with ethernet then in a stylin case..
Something like this?
Doesn't have ethernet but you can do whatever raid level you want on it. -
Re:Follow Apple's example
That rack unit in the picture looks like it is XtremeMac's Xrack which is a 12U enclosed rack designed for XServe+XRaid for around $1799

iPod Car Chargers
An inexpensive homebrew iPod battery sounds way cool! However, just to clarify something...Not bad for that long car trip where you just don't have a firewire charger handy.
Actually, there ARE car chargers for the iPod, and they're only $20:

Re:Next will be the We-Pod
I have an iPod-friendly jacksplitter, for those romantic two-sets-of-headphones moments. It's called an iShare and it's iPod white. iShare Never used it though. Cuter in the idea than in the execution; kinda like the "two straws in one soda" thing.

Re:Interface options
Buy a cassette adapter. Here's one for example:
XtremeMac's iPod Cassette Adapter
Though any cassette adapter will work (there are many manufacturers). -

The iPod is durable
I'd want to hear some 'torture-test' stories (like, you know, using it while walking...) from some I-Pod owners
Well, my first generation 5 GB iPod still works fine, after one year and a half. No complaints whatsoever. I use my iPod while cycling, walking, sitting on the bus. I've put them in a Xtrememac case (the 5 Gig model does not come with a case, the others do). The most extreme situations my iPod has been through (besides of residing in my pants-pocket while cycling), is falling of the table sometimes. It needs the case, I suppose, but it came out just fine. So if you ask about the durability, I think you're quite safe with an iPod.From a happy iPodder.

Re:Well..
I've got my iPod in a leopard pattern case that I picked up from XtremeMac at MacWorld SF in January. It's not pink, but it was cute and girly enough for me to favor over the plain black ones. I'm pretty sure they've also got a light purple and a demin case...
