Free Web OS like EyeOS and others...
There are many free Web OS (as I understand them) out there. For example, EyeOS at http://eyeos.org/en or this other: http://www.oos.cc/login.html YouOS https://www.youos.com/ (now closed
:( ) and one from the MIT whose URL I can't recall now... These project are 2 or more years old. If the new Web OS is just this old concept, I think like they're just shouting buzzword (again). -
Anybody noticed...
That as of today, YouOS has been pulled by it's developers? Amazing timing, no?

Virtual Desktop
You also might want to open a free account on one of the web desktops such as http://G.ho.st, YouOS, or DesktopTwo. In this way you'd have all your documents, pictures and email incorporated and easily accessed from any place in the world. G.ho.st actually is giving out a free 3GB for emails and 3GB for data.

Re:Old Concept, New Technology
Never heard of youOS? http://www.youos.com/ [youos.com] It's a java-based web operating system. And it runs better than the Ajax one.
Nah, that's written in Ajax too, but it just seems to work better and the web browser is from within the 'os'. ajaxWindows just has a better UI. -

YouOS
For a really impressive web OS, try YouOS. It works in several browsers (I've tried Opera and Konqueror), looks and acts like a desktop OS with GUI, has its own API, and it's open source.

The point is to have fun working on a neat idea.Comments about YouOS often fall into one of the following buckets:
1) "feh, what's the point."
2) "feh, it doesn't manage hardware, it's not really an OS."
Regarding #1, I'd say that the point is to have fun working on a neat idea, and see where it leads. If it doesn't strike you as fun or interesting, move on an keep looking for something that is.
Regarding #2, you're right, it's not really an OS. However the metaphor still applies, as the vast majority of computer users think of the OS as "the screen that runs my programs."
fwiw, I built the Bitty Browser that's available from within YouOS (you can see Bitty in YouOS here -- though YouOS seems to be
/dotted right now.)-Scott

Virus
If you really want to have some fun, take advantage of the "saved sessions" idea. Build a program that will open up http://www.youos.com/html/ in the youBrowser infinitely. This will eventually bog down the users system so much that he has to either exit his browser or reboot the system. Now thanks to the saved sessions idea, when he logs back into youOS that program will run again. He'll never be able to use his account again. Muahahahaha

Internet O/S is not going to fly...
I clicked on the link to http://www.youos.com/, watched as Firefox sat there for about 15 seconds with a blank page... then realized that I had already seen enough.

FTA: http://www.youos.com/html/static/manifesto.html
"Why develop on YouOS? One Language: All you need to know is javascript. No perl, python, ruby, SQL, C, etc. That's right! You can do server stuff from javascript!"
'server stuff'?
uhh... What kind of server stuff?
This is why Marketing people should not write the segment that is targeting developers. Developers are obviously a lot smarter than the average users you're trying to sell this service too, so it's rather insulting.
I assume they mean: You can use JavaScript to interface with their API's.
