You deserve WAY more mod points for that. That's probably the funniest thing I've ever read on Slashdot. Or maybe it's just the sleep deprivation. Either way, I'm sorry I didn't have the mod points today.
The problem is that when converting the data into music, there is no... whats the word... personality for the specific mountain that created that data. Its similar to running rand() and creating music from that. Sure it might be cooler than a bunch of random numbers, but if I'm looking for a pattern I'd rather see numbers and graphs than have to say "Ahh it crescendoed from B# to Fb, this must be relative to the position of the plates... blah blah"
I'm thinking the "convert raw data to music and then extract valuable data from music" step is just in there to ooh and ahh the grant boards. How can that be more efficient than just looking at the raw data?
hopefully google with their vast infrastructure will speed up some of the site by using some sort of distributed computing for the search features, which i'm sure requires a lot of cpu speed to search close to 100 million users
I wish there was a "Im trying to sound smart but am not at all" mod option.
If you really want to have some fun, take advantage of the "saved sessions" idea.
Build a program that will open up http://www.youos.com/html/ in the youBrowser infinitely. This will eventually bog down the users system so much that he has to either exit his browser or reboot the system.
Now thanks to the saved sessions idea, when he logs back into youOS that program will run again. He'll never be able to use his account again.
Muahahahaha
I registered outrun2006.net for some stupid reason (see http://www.outrun2006.com/ for what Outrun 2006 is) and now I don't want it. You get it for as much as you want to pay for it. Message me if you want to buy.
A quick USPTO patent search for Willard Boyle turns up nothing about a CCD, but rather someone who patented the sun visor and humidifier. In the article, Mr. Boyle states how he made the prototype at the Bell lab. Is it possible that Bells holds all patents on discoveries made by it's employees?
Slightly offtopic, but...
His site has the Copyright tag removed off the bottom, he's just using a generic downloadable template from http://beccary.com/goodies/wordpress-themes/
Now that template also has some similarities to a (continually in construction) site that I've been building at http://mikewashere05.bounceme.net/
Do we really want this guy trying to teach us moral lessons?
How about we let the government implant us all at birth with a chip that has our Social Security number and the ability to stop us from moving. This way if we're convicted of doing a felony (because the justice system never fails) they can just stop us from having the ability to run away from people! Or maybe have us walk towards the nearest re-education center.
Halo 2... on Xbox Live. The campaign sucks, but nothing will ever beat a Multi-Flag CTF on Burial Mounds, or Team Slayer on Coagulation, or Classic CTF on Midship, or CTF on Lockout, or Assault on Lockout, or... you get the idea.
Theres just so many possible combinations. Plus the fact that you're playing people, or a group of 8 people that have insane strategy and coordination. AI just doesn't have that appeal.
This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how Americans get a bad reputation as arrogant fools. I was agreeing with this poster until the "The United States of America is the greatest country in the history of the world. This Earth belongs to the US, the rest just live here." line.
Yes, the US does do great things. Yes, the US does make some mistakes (as does any country.) But to say that the world belongs to the US is just pure arrogance.

I don't think the RIAA got that memo...

Looks to me like some horses and poker chips could solve the ISPs problem.

You must be new here.
Forgot the patent search link: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PT O2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2Fsearch-adv.htm&r=0 &p=1&f=S&l=50&Query=IN%2FWillard+and+Boyle&d=ptxt
(I know it's long, not my fault.)
And I noticed that someone replied to the parent's post confirming the fact that Bell labs holds the patent.

Last time I checked, Google hadn't turned over the information of users searching "Democracy" on Google.cn
What Y! and MS did got people thrown in jail for what we call in the free world "Freedom of the press". Google has yet to do that.
Why would he steal it if he has authorized access to it?
We sent it to the address you provided.
;)
It can't be both?
http://www.quaero.fr/ Maybe?
