We work in this space
Our business is one of the leaders in sensors for underground mines, so we are privy to the culture of some of the biggest players in this space.
Check this out as an example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?... as to where at least cave style mining is heading.
AI is bit a of dumb term. Automation and closed loop feedback would be a better description for what is happening in mining. For example Rio have recently completed a large automated heavy rail network in Australia. http://www.railpage.com.au/new...
Companies like http://www.petradatascience.co... are using big data to increase reliability and reduce ore dilution.Take for example sub level mining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
A phd was recently presented that looked at three parameters to do with explosive density, ring spacing & tunnel spacing and dilution and fragmentation. It found varying just these three parameters had the OPPOSITE effect to what was commonly understood by industry. AI is useless unless you understand the fundamentals!Now here where you get the big culture differences. A consultant plans the mine, a contractor builds out the infrastructure (which can be $5 Billion+), and someone else operates the mine. The operator just cares about pulling out as much ore as possible. To do real R&D that helps improve mine productivity, usually involves disruptions, which means preparing budgets years in advance and executing programs over multiple years, then trying to convince the operator to change their process based on the R&D. It takes a lot of effort, money and time. For example: to drill one 100mm hole 1km long to put sensors in, can cost one million dollars!
So yes, tech continues to ramp up in mines, with increased sensors, automation and data feedback, but the gains are slow and hard won!

Re:It's not clipping wings
the problem to solve is how to pay content creators the royalties they deserve
It is quite the opposite. It's easy for copyright holders to flag content. It's a completely automated system. You can read about it here:
https://support.google.com/you...Platforms such as Facebook are much, much worse. Someone can steal your video from YouTube and upload it to Facebook and it'll be there for weeks before Facebook gets around to taking it down. You can learn about that here:

Soil Microbiome
Most plants also (quite literally) feed the soil microbiome by producing sugars and other nutrients that bacteria and fungi absorb. The microorganisms return the favor by fixing nitrogen, for plants that don't do that themselves, as well as defending the roots from non-friendly microorganisms, and probably a whole host of other things that we don't even know about yet: perhaps even participating in the communication network that plants use to help identify clones vs. same-species neighbors vs. other plants.

Re:If plants are sentient creatures
carrot juice is murder!
Jokes aside nobody's suggestion plants are sentient, just that they seem to have behaviors that favor similar plants. That could just as easily be an evolved survival mechanism. Plants still don't have central nervous systems.
Though I do think it would be cool in a sci-fi sort of way to evolve beyond the need for consuming living organisms. That said, we ain't there, and while I eat a mostly vegetarian diet it's for health reasons, not for the sake of animals. I've got a dog for Pete's sake, and I ain't feeding her carrots. -

Re: If this hurts Apple's bottom line, it should.
Can you add a jack to an XR or XS?
Probably. The iPhone 7 is smaller than the Xs and Xr, so there's more internal room in the later models.
How did the hacked up iPhone do in the waterproof test?
Dunno. Given that others can make waterproof phones with 3.5mm jacks and USB jacks I would assume that Apple could do the same.
Obviously Lightning alone is more robust than headphone+Lightning.
Sure - you've introduced another point of failure. And a Lightning connector is less robust than a 3.5mm connector; the Lightning connector is about 90% wider, but it is just 42% as thick. Since stiffness/rigidity goes as the cube of thickness, the total mechanical rigidity of the 3.5mm connector is (2.3 ^ 3 / 1.9) about 6.6 times higher than the Lightning connector. In other words, the Lightning connector would snap before the 3.5mm jack.
How did Apple force users to buy new bluetooth headphones? They include lightning earbuds in the box. They included a headphone adapter in the box for the first two years, and continue to sell it for 9 bucks.
So you can keep buying $9 connectors, or just go ahead and "bite the bullet" and buy a Bluetooth headphone. it's a "push" thing, that clearly Apple is stating "Bluetooth is superior, why aren't you using it?" And then they get more folks walking around with droopy white tubes hanging from their ears, listening to poor-sounding audio but obviously "hip" because they use an Apple Bluetooth product.

Re:What a mess but... Stardock is to blame here
You don't know what you are talking about. Timeline of events:
Stardock buys the trademark to the name "Star Control" and the non-licenced portions of Star Control 3.
Stardock contacts F&P to see if they would work on a new Star Control, F&P decline because they have their own plans for it.
Stardock send contract to F&P trying to strongarm them into handing over the rights to SC1 and SC2.
F&P revise the contract to allow them to keep their rights and for Stardock to keep their trademark so that both do their own thing.
Stardock rejects counter proposal and files lawsuit against F&P claiming misuse of trademark over a statement of fact.
Stardock starts selling SC1, SC2 and SC3 without permission from F&P.
Stardock tries to shut down The Ur-Quan Masters project and forum.
Stardock tries to trademark names which F&P invented and owned the rights to.
Stardock launches smear campaign by lying and claiming that F&P didn't create or have anything to do with SC1 and SC2.
Stardock releases Star Control: Origins while it was the focal point of a counter suit.
Star Control: Origins is blatantly plagiarised from The Ur-Quan Masters.F&P have been nothing but cool over the years. From when Paul created the legendary game Archon, to Star Control and Star Control II, to open sourcing and releasing Star Control II to the fans. When have Stardock ever shown any caring or graciousness like that?

Re:Apollo 18
No, it's true! I saw it in a movie!
Seriously, when the missions were being cancelled, there was some talk of landing on the far side as something new and different. But that's all it was.
-
Re: If this hurts Apple's bottom line, it should.
Provably false, given that you can put a headphone jack into an iPhone 7. As far as failures, the 3.5mm jack is much more robust than the Lightning connector (look at the mechanical ratings for each). This was done purely as an exercise to increase revenues for Apple, who had bought the biggest Bluetooth headphone brand out there - Beats. What better way to grow sales than to force all your phone users to buy new Bluetooth headphones?

Re:Is it just me?
I just googled Maisto which is plastered all over the image. It looks like they are a toy die-cast company: en.wikipedia.org.
If you look closely, there is a smaller version of the rover sitting on the right solar planel which looks like what is in the boxes to the right. You can see an unboxing of the toy here www.youtube.com.
Makes me wonder if they funded the rover by selling toy replicas? -

I did not buy any iDevice in 4 years
I don't want an MacBook with soldered on SSD (for upgrade or potential data recovery), glued in battery, keyboard that get stuck by dust, and even more thermal throttling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?... The iPhone is a similar story, I simply want a normal headphone jack, for traveling, cheap travel headset replacements in case of, also the price is way too high, especially in Europe: https://rene.rebe.de/2017-09-1... and last but not least the glass backs of iPhones just add another unnecessary way to break your iPhone when it drops the usual once or twice a year (or more often for less careful users),

Re:What is that, like 9 iPhones?
If they hadn't fucked up the Final Cut Pro suite with FCPX, they might not have had problems selling Mac Pros, especially since Adobe went subscription and doesn't seem to care about any of the plights of its paying customers. The trashcan form factor was a stupid move, but it only mirrors the stupid move that was FCPX. Even today, many professionals stubbornly edit on FCP7 or use FCPX with a huge grudge. FCPX is basically nothing more than an iMovie on steroids and that dumb magnetic timeline emphasizes the point all too well. Heaven help you if you're naive enough to buy an iMac Pro and want to do something it's supposed to be able to do using "official" Apple solutions.

TL:DR; I watch a few YouTube gamers because I want to learn something about the game and get ideas.
= The Long Version =
I used to be in the exact same boat a few years ago: Why the fuck would I _watch_ someone (else) play when I could be _playing_ it ???
You asked if "Maybe it's a generational thing?" -- I think this definitely plays (pardon the pun) a part in it.
I've been gaming for ~40 years; I play a lot of games and I'm always looking be better. Specifically (in alphabetical order):
* Age of Empires 2
* Minecraft
* Starcraft 2
* Vermintide 2
* Warframei.e. For AoE2 I wanted to beat the computer on the hardest difficulty, for Starcraft 2 I wanted to hit 100 APM, for Minecraft I was always looking for tips for redstone builds (i.e. Item sorter, AFK farms, dupers, etc.).
It started when I wanted to learn how do _X_ and eventually I started watching their other videos on the topic. Here is a partial list of YouTube gamers I subscribe to and WHY I do:
= Age of Empires 2 =
* T90 Amazing and interesting commentary.
* Spirit Of The Law Great technical analysis. See AoE2 Scorpions comparison video.
* Resonance22Channel. He has a great video on Aoe2 Tutorial: Fast Castle Age, Knight Rush Build, Economy Boom= ARK =
* Nooblets has TONs of tutorial videos. See his ARK - How to Farm and Irrigate your Crops video for an example.
= Elite Dangerous =
* Obsidian Ant -- One of the most calming and relaxing voices I've ever heard. Great commentary on the state of the game.
= Minecraft =
* MumboJumbo known for over-complicating almost every redstone build, but has great British humor. e.g. Minecraft: 8 Micro Farms YOU WILL NEED!
* Jeracraft Massive terraformer and uber buildings! See his The Biggest Minecraft Throne Room EVER! for an idea of his scale!
* Gnembon Provides one of the most technical descriptions about how the game works and "fun farms." See his video on uber guardian farm for xp His CarpetMod provides all sorts of stats on entity spawning. He found why Minecraft 1.13 water was 15x slower then Minecraft 1.12 !

* Age of Empires 2
* Minecraft
* Starcraft 2
* Vermintide 2

Re:That's Unpossible
People with brand new Teslas are having to send them back to the factory to get fixed for incredibly obvious shit. This is a trend that spiked in December.

https://forums.tesla.com/forum...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...Sales went up because they absolutely gutted quality control in order to roll out more vehicles before the end of the year. I'd bet my life on it being a deliberate move to placate moronic investors who still swallow the the tripe and believe the hype. Oh, you wanted us to manufacture X number of ACCEPTABLE cars? Give us another year to get those numbers up.
