Re:vote with your feet
Numbers, party platforms, and laws, however, do tell the full story: government is in bed with Christian churches in much of Europe. You have to be utterly blind not to see that.
Got any specifics? I'm well aware of the historical connection of the church to everywhere, but my point was even if the Queen of England was fucking the Pope, more people will still vote for an Atheist leader in Europe than the US. And they don't force their religion onto their currency.
You asked for good places to live in the US and were concerned about religion being "public policy". And I responded that religion is much less "public policy" in the US than in Europe, and that even when Americans are religious, they tend to be quite tolerant.
In some places. The US is a vast nation so it varies from place to place.
You want to talk about Christianity in politics? Note that even on gay marriage, Germany (one of the more "progressive" European countries on gay rights) has always been behind the US.
Nice. You chose Germany because it is the one country that is behind the US, but ignored the other dozen that are in front?
Well, as a gay man, I'm glad I emigrated from the "sophisticated and progressive" European culture to the "barbaric" American culture.
I'm glad you are happy, but that doesn't mean that progressive (not 19th century US progressive) policies don't improve lives.
Any minority group should be well aware of the that. -

Re:vote with your feet
Since you are not from the US and to help you put this into perspective, I pointed out that religion is much less "public policy" in the US than it is in Europe, both according to party platforms and according to spending.
Well this maybe one of those things were the numbers don't tell the full story.
Numbers, party platforms, and laws, however, do tell the full story: government is in bed with Christian churches in much of Europe. You have to be utterly blind not to see that.
I don't know what these countries spend on religion, but having been to most of them, I know it is as not important as some parts of the US if you don't go along with it.
You asked for good places to live in the US and were concerned about religion being "public policy". And I responded that religion is much less "public policy" in the US than in Europe, and that even when Americans are religious, they tend to be quite tolerant.
There have been many Athiest leaders in many countries, but 53% of Americans say they would never vote for one,

That is barbaric, and not progressive using any definition of the word.

Re:vote with your feet
Black Lives Matter has a lot of legitimate points, but what happened to Michael Brown was not one of them. It's unpleasantly common for police to kill people who aren't actually threatening anyone and get away with it, particularly when the victims are blacks. We're starting to see some action on that, including the bypassing of grand juries and the drive for body cams.
Police brutality is an issue for everybody, not just black people. That they choose to highlight ridiculous cases, make the issue only about blacks, ignore black on black violence and black on white violence, and make ridiculous protests because Clinton said "super-predator" when describing criminal gangs in the 1990s all goes back to the "progressive" stupidity inundating the country.
I haven't seen all that much suppression of free speech on campuses.
https://www.thefire.org/catego...
This is also a good place to mention the University of Missouri ridiculousness as part of the general zeitgeist of college campuses.
As far as social media goes, if you want to say things on Facebook, you've got to abide by Facebook rules. The social media are privately owned, and nobody's got a right to say whatever they want on them.
No shit, but free speech isn't just about legal rights. That they're bowing to pressure to censor politically incorrect speech is the point.
I have no idea what problem you have with transgender people. The other 99% can deal with transgender people just like they deal with everybody else, and have no problems whatsoever.
If that's the case, then why is there all the media attention pushing for transgender acceptance? Why was everybody falling over themselves to talk about how "brave and stunning" Bruce Jenner was when he attempted to transform himself into a woman, and not talking about the person he killed with his car?
If somebody wants to pretend they're a woman when they're a man, well it's a free country, but I'm never going to see them as a woman, despite the barrage of "progressive" media. There's an alternative viewpoint that it's a mental illness, and normalizing transgenderism and encouraging body mutilation with hormones and reassignment surgery is unhealthy.

I'm under the impression that it's the nuts that have the loudest voices or get the most attention. It's almost as if the media intentional seeks them out to plaster all over national news, I'm not even sure it's news any more it's like shock reporting where they find the craziest thing to air just to bring in viewers it might as well be News at 10 with Howard Stern.
Bill Maher had an interesting insight into some of what what you are talking about https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
At the present time, there is a lot of SJW stuff in the news. Partly because they are kooks, bent on whining about everything, and partly because people expect kookhattery from the right wing, so it isn't really news when one of them gets caught in the Restroom at Denny's giving Oral sex to some random dude stranger before going to a fundraising dinner to make Gay marriage illegal again. Kooks...Kooks everywhere...
There has not been a presidential candidate worth voting for since before I was old enough to vote your choices are... let me see which is less likely to completely screw everything up.
Does such a person even exist? Anything short of perfection is verboten. Hell, we had a president impeached because of a blowjob. Id if the worst thing you ever did was get a blowjob, you aren't doing too bad.

Re: So is yours!
inequalities exist. Being human has nothing to do with being forced to do things, because others want to spend your money for you. Empathy is emotion and just like acting when I am angry, I don't necessarily have to act when I am being Empathetic. Sometimes the BEST thing to do for a person is nothing. Which goes against just about every liberal tenant there is.
Yes, life is a struggle, and we all need help at some time or another. And sometimes, when we want help, we shouldn't be getting any, because the struggle is what makes life worth living.

Re:Planted evidence
What keeps the cops from planting digital evidence is primarily the incompetence of the police.
They wouldn't have someone who knows how to actually fake planted digital evidence. Such as spoofing the "Last Modified" and "File Created On" file system records.
Now the FBI or DHS, on the other hand might. However, if they want you for something you're fucked anyway. The truth is there's really nothing you can do, and Jurors are idiots who will believe the statements of authorities rather than your "tinfoil hat conspiracy theory".
What's that Sibko? You're hearing voices inside your head? Ah, well then you must be schizophrenic, or in need of reeducation. There's no evidence that anyone is out to get you.

Re:No helmet???
This type of system dates back to the 70s. it inspired countless engineers, but has a long history of accidents.
the time aloft is so short that there isn't room for the slightest hesitation before you run out of fuel and become a falling brick.
it was ok for Hollywood where you filmed a series of 10 second sets and spliced them together, but it was never practical for any other use.Companies with newer designs have increased the time aloft and in doing so the safety.
https://www.youtube.com/channe...
Martin Aircraft even uses a ballistic recovery parachute for added safety.
https://www.youtube.com/channe...
people need to apply a little darwinism and start supporting the companies with the safer systems.

Farnsworth fusor
These kinds of fusion reactors have been around for a long time. They are fun and not overly hard to build. They are effectively little more than a big vacuum tube. Here is a Makezine article on how to build one. Here is a Youtube video. They are used as neutron sources, but none of these designs has a prayer of generating more energy than it requires to run. It's certainly a nice science fair project, but it's not a groundbreaking novel discovery.

Re:I thought most intelligent people did that
If a hardware designer is that motivated to snoop on you, then they probably wouldn't bother installing a fake physical kill switch. After all, the current status quo is no hardware switch at all. Do you seriously imagine that they're going to add a hardware kill switch, but then secretly add a method for software to bypass it? It really doesn't make a lot of sense.
For me, I'm more concerned about the actual, documented cases of spy software, malware, or simply badly designed systems used to snoop on people surreptitiously. I'm pretty sure a simple on/off switch would work wonders in these cases. And hey, if you don't trust the switch, there's always the old "piece of tape over the camera" fallback.

Re:the weight is the impressive part
Want to see it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
I was going off the top of my head in my earlier post, and I did get some things wrong. I was indeed thinking ball instead of the old WWII AP round.
The general rule of thumb (from naval guns, of all things) is that you need your mild steel armor to be about as thick as the incoming projectile to stop it. You add about 50% if the projectile is designed to pierce armor. You can take that 50% back if your armor is face hardened. (Or if you have a decapping layer, but that's a whole 'nother story.)
That rule of thumb works with small arms too, as long as the small projectile is built like a naval round. Ball is. The more modern SLAP is. The old school M2 AP is not. Oops, my bad. With face hardening, like AR500 plate, you need 50% extra thickness (more if you want to avoid dimpling). Without it, you need something like 200% extra thickness just to stop it, and you have no hope of preserving the face.
I think I was getting the upmods more for the video than anything else, and the video is still fantastic.

Re: The earth's chucking a wobbly!
Instead of looking at percentages, which look rather small and innocent, there's a better way to interpret the data. Imagine we put all the CO2 of the atmosphere in a solid layer of CO2 at standard atmospheric pressure. Pre-industrial age, that layer would be about 3 meters thick. Since then, we've added an extra meter, which has a pretty significant effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
-
Re:the weight is the impressive part
Clearly a lot of uniformed upvoters here if this gets a 5. The article says the test was done with an M2 AP (not ball) round and a half inch of even armour steel is not stopping one of those, let alone "thousands of shots with virtually no wear". See for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
