For example? Can in imagine if you're an *honest* politician? And one that just wants to solve a few problems, wants to generally 'fix' something they see broken? Not in it for the power, or money, but honestly just want to make things better.

Yes. I can imagine. I think most politicians are trying to do good. Most even, are trying to do good for people other than themselves. Even those nutjobs that want women to be second class citizens, to ban contraceptives, to ban alchohol, to ban rock'n'roll, and to put scripture into the lawbooks. They just want to do good because they see a bunch of stuff that's broken, and they want to fix it. Unfortunetely, their definition of "broken" doesn't quite line up with mine, and their ideas about how to fix it is absolute nightmare fuel and I disagree with them on the best way forward. Hardly any of them are actually EVIL.

You overall argument is that we should be kind to politicians. While I agree that the personal attacks are pointless (distracting even), we should MOST ASSUREDLY give politicians a hard time and be skeptical as hell of anything they're pushing. If you're right, that merely elevates the article from "crackpot claptrap" to "shoddily written clickbait". The mystery is less what happens than why it happens only to some ships, and why ship owners don't take the safety measures that are described in other comments here.

The article and accompanying discussion addresses these questions and was technically interesting and high quality. "A lot is known about the physics of the liquefaction [...] Yet despite our understanding of this phenomenon (and the guidelines in place to prevent it occurring), it is still causing ships to sink and take their crew with them."

The technical answer is that the existing guidance on stowing and shipping solid bulk cargoes is too simplistic. Liquefaction potential depends not just on how much moisture is in a bulk cargo but also other material characteristics, such as the particle size distribution, the ratio of the volume of solid particles to water and the relative density of the cargo, as well as the method of loading and the motions of the vessel during the voyage.

The economics make it clear that it's not worth spending huge amounts of money (that also make ships more awkward to load) for an event that's comparatively rare. It's doubly not worth spending money on refits when we don't even have a good physics model of it, one that's backed by data+observations. And if we kitted out some experimental ships but they proved to be in the 99.9% of ships that aren't affected by the phenomenon, then we won't have gathered any data.

The main idea in this thread was lengthwise bulkheads. I've never seen a ship designed that way. Not sure why. Maybe because it's a bulkhead that would need to be seriously strong (to stop the millions of tonnes) and would contribute nothing to the structure of the ship; only weight. Another idea was pumps to remove the water. Those would have to be exceptionally robust to handle being hammered by lumps of bauxite, and not get clogged by the finer bauxite. Maybe you could put a pump behind a mesh, if you could invent a mesh that would stand up to the millions of tons. The article suggests that another cause might actually just be the *speed* of loading. If that's true, how would we measure+test that? Could we invent a different loading technique that's mostly as fast? It'd be massively cheaper than lengthwise bulkheads.

In the video, the Australian Maritime Safety Organizations suggests a different preventative measure which is - captains should be aware that this is a phenomenon, aware of what are the warning signs, should pay attention to those first signs, and should consider seeking a Port of Refuge.

In short - excellent article, interesting phenomenon that even though we know about liquefaction and know about ocean shipping most of us still wouldn't have thought of, is deeper than "just add bulkheads".

Not compelling to you maybe but Apple is still selling ludicrous numbers of these things so the evidence is clear that they are compelling to a lot of people. The real question is whether Apple can keep improving the products fast enough to maintain or grow revenue further. There is evidence that the smartphone market at least in the US has matured and reached something close to saturation. That means further growth in that market becomes a zero sum game. It's going to be challenging in the long term for Apple to remain a step ahead in perpetuity. And given their current size, growth is going to be REALLY hard. To just grow 5% they have to generate the entire amount of business eBay does from scratch. And it has to have some rather ludicrous margins. There just aren't that many possible products that can move the needle for a company the size of Apple.

Apple has a strong brand but that is not what they are. Apple fundamentally is a software company and people forget or misunderstand this routinely. Their hardware is just the pretty box they bundle with it to sell it to you. Nobody buys a brand if the underlying products suck - or at least they don't buy the products for very long. People often think that Apple is a hardware company but the mistake in this logic is that you cannot be something you do not make and they do not (mostly) make their own hardware - they outsourced that. The thing they do keep in house is software and product design. Since they don't actually sell product design that means their business is really software. Think about it. You could easily put Windows on a Mac or Android on an iPhone since the underlying hardware is near identical. The reason people buy Apple products and pay a premium for them is based in what is different about them and the main difference is the software.
