tangent: shure e2,e3 earphone frequency responseshure makes some of the best sounding ear buds around. Does anyone know where I can find a sound quality test that includes shure e2, e3 and e5 earphones? Graphs for Etys would be nice too.
I have E2s and love them. I'm curious to see how their accuracy compares.

"Classic experience" desktop is equivalent to W2K
Please tell me the Longhorn desktop is NOT going to be 3D only, with no 2D acceleration. I mean, I have no problem with a desktop having lots of 3D effects for people who like them, but at least give us the chance to TURN THE DAMN CHROME OFF!
There WILL be a desktop option that is "equivalent" to Windows 2000, but I'm not sure if it will be available to ALL Longhorn users. This page from Microsoft's Windows Hardware and Driver Central site describes three different desktop "experiences" for Longhorn, each with different graphics requirements: Graphics Hardware and Drivers for Windows "Longhorn" (Updated: November 25, 2003)Here's an exerpt from that page:
For Longhorn, graphics requirements for desktop experiences are defined in relation to differentiated experiences:
- Aero Glass experience: Delivers the full-featured Longhorn user experience on the desktop, including support for 3D graphics and animation.
- Aero experience: Delivers the minimum hardware acceleration and desktop composition for the Longhorn user experience.
- Classic experience: Equivalent to Windows 2000 capabilities, using software rendering.
I'm still uncertain whether or not the "Classic experience" (Windows 2000 equivalent) will be available to ALL Longhorn users. Microsoft's slideshow at WinHEC (May 2003) seems to indicate that a "Windows 2000 compatability mode" will only be available to "enterprises that desire this option." Here's that slide describing the different desktop experiences: Longhorn User Experience

Try Xandros
Read this story from last month about Xandros 2.0. With the crossover office built in, it's easier than ever to simply select a Windows application you want to install, and it will guide you through it. Check out this screenshot and be amazed at how truly simple this is. I've been using this for the past couple weeks, and I have to say it's the first time I haven't had to go back into Windows to use Dreamweaver -- my primary app. Of course, the crossover office can be used with other distros, but I'm a Xandros convert through and through.

Re:Transmeta vs VIA C3??
Good point... The new generation of VIA processors continue to create interesting possibilities.
This article has some information on upcoming VIA processors/boards. A new processor package that is about the size of a penny, and the nano-ITX board for ultra small devices looks really cool.
But, the thing I want in that article is the proto Dual Processor C5P motherboard, with dual ethernets and a DVI display output. That would make a great little linux server and/or gateway box. -

Here is a larger image of it.

Thanks Chief...
But here's a much larger fucking picture.

Re:Did anyone else notice
Not only did he leave the paper towels out, but there is a MASSIVE SPOOGE MARK right next to them on the desk.
Totally busted.
Let's see him try to "JPEG-artifact" talk his way out of that one. -
Re:Yeah, so did I
I gave it to your mom last night, as well.
Ah maybe you shoulda checked the pic of her before being so witty. -
What a shock - mom gives it a big thumbs up
"Find out if Lindows 4.0 passed the "Mom Test."
As if this article would even be here if Mom had threw up her hands in exasperation and violently kicked the monitor in.
So are we to believe that this POS OS is now clueless-noob-friendly, just because some jerk's mom finally managed to find a word processor by hitting random keys with her giant thumb? And didn't she need some coaching just to do that?
What about real tasks for the clueless masses: sending email, instant messaging, sending home videos to grandpa, playing games, downloading snapshots from a camera, selling nicknacks on Ebay, printing out lame banners and cards, etc.???
Let us know how those things work out with your Lindows, Mom.

Jim's mom has a huge thumb.

Simpsons???
Crips, did anyone look at how stinking tiny those buttons are?
I can hear it now...
The fingers you have used to dial are too fat. To obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad with the palm of your hand.. now. -
Number of Combinations?
Okay, maybe I'm just a little anal here, but I can't figure this out. These two two domes are nothing more than just 8 way joysticks, as pointed out above. So, if you have two 8 way joysticks, thats 8 ways for the left * 8 ways for the right = 8^2 = 64. So, you have 64 combinations to type your keys.
But now, if you look at at this image, there are 66 keys to press with two dome movements! Any I missing something here? -

Desktop Snapshot
So if you're anything like me, and you wouldn't admit it if you were, you clicked on the desktop picture in the review and thought 'Wow, that really does look exactly like windows 2000, Media Player and everything.'
Little did my small friday brain realize, it was a picture of what it looked like inserting the Lindows CD onto a running Windows machine. Here I thought we were getting away from windows machine, but I digress.
The real image on a Lindows desktop is located here -

Wow... just look at this guy. Strongly indicates someone trying to be outside the box.
Expanded picture from the article.
Another pictures is on his homepage that even has some information on "running Unix on IBM PC110 palmtop computer" and "a Casio E-105 Palm-sized PC" -
If only....
... the Shuttle SS51 had a 64bit PCI slot - then I could put one of these in it - CAE render board with 4 x Radeon 8500 GPUs
Mind you I would have to cut a big long slot in the top and front of the case to make it fit..... who cares though if my PC looks like a toaster when you have one of those.

Re:Hat
As you can see here, sometimes he does.
Quite dashing I think... but he looks like the devil. Maybe it's Gates' hat.
