Re:Sue and be subject to radioactive publicity
From Zoomify's website:
It is important to note, however, that no image presented on the web can be completely protected - if you can see an image, the data is on your computer and it can be retrieved by someone sufficiently determined. For this reason, we provide Zoomify as a viewing solution and not an image security system. The program that they are claiming to be their "effective technological measure" is not marketed or intended as such, in fact it is specifically denounced by its makers as a terrible security measure.
That was the only serious part of their claims, as the US has similar regulations in the DMCA.
From what I can tell, there are no US laws that this person is breaking whatsoever, and the only UK law he is (debateably) breaking (because of a lack of UK precedent) is the copyright on a reproduction of a public-domain painting.

Zoomify is "not an image security system"
I suspect the anti-circumvention part will be thrown out regardless. The Zoomify FAQ states: "It is important to note, however, that no image presented on the web can be completely protected - if you can see an image, the data is on your computer and it can be retrieved by someone sufficiently determined. For this reason, we provide Zoomify as a viewing solution and not an image security system."

Couldn't check TFD sorry
As I am on OS X and Silverlight beta 2.x doesn't exist for PPC (while Flash 10 beta exists), I couldn't check the marvellous demo.
What I know is, Zoomify exists for years starting as a cross-platform Quicktime codec and later a Flash program. In fact, it is free to implement your sites which will run anywhere with Flash installed. (I did)

MS should be busy compiling their Beta for OS X/PPC since people already started to say they are a bit early for their "lag those non windows punks releases" tactic. -
similar to zoomify
this seems to do the same thing as zoomify only with a smoother interface, wake me up when they have a version I can put my own photos in, preferably for free (and preferably not using silverlight)

Re:Sounds like good technology for lots of uses
Oh, right, of course. Right at the top of the gigapixel tapestry story. Typical.

The child of that comment also has a link to a flash applet called zoomify:

Re:Sounds like good technology for lots of uses
Check for Zoomify, but that's Flash-based instead of JavaScript. Easy to use and quick, but jpeg tiles can lead to new artifacts. Using it for photo maps would be nice, but line graphics maps would be ugly.

Re:Gigabyte, gigapixel artwork?
I've used a Flash-based system called Zoomify to display higher resolution mosaics (up to 50 megapixels, myself). It works well, but since it's all based on jpegs, the tile deconstruction process can introduce more compression artifacts and a little bit of softening. It's worth the space and super-simple to install and use, in my experience.

Zoomify
If anyone is looking for a great viewer/tiler for high rez images check out Zoomify. I've been using a copy I recieved for free with a bundle from Erain and it rocks, but there is also a free lite version on there site as well. and it easily integrates into flash. http://www.zoomify.com/
