    We called them "yuppies" - would that term be demeaning enough?

    But that word doesn't have "sex" in it, and it doesn't sound like the words "homosexual" or "transsexual." As we know, sex is dirty enough, but homosexuals and transsexuals are all disease-ridden, AIDS-infested, sex-crazed, godless, hedonistic, er..., I'm sure there are a few more words I could use along those lines but I haven't had my tea^H^H^Hcoffee yet (of course I'm a real man! tea is for girls!). At any rate, no, "yuppie" wasn't demeaning enough.

    Besides, someone who's young and upper class might just be well-connected and a hard worker. Homosexuals, transsexuals, and their newest effiminate (nothing worse than being feminine, a fate worse than death) sexual deviant might be well-connected, but hard-working, even deserving? Pfft. </troll>

    People are put in physically or emotionally distressing situations;

    Their problems are reduced to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized;

    --I was told that the Bible is the perfect word of God and that everything I need to know is in there. This is clearly retarded, but the covered for this by saying that questioning this would constitute a sin. Referring back to my previous point, it is easy to see why I took so long to see this.

    They receive unconditional love, acceptance, and attention from a charismatic leader;

    --Yep

    They get a new identity based on the group;

    --Two words: "Born again"

    They are subject to entrapment (isolation from friends, relatives, and the mainstream culture) and their access to information is severely controlled.

    --I was repeatedly encouraged to hang out with Christians and to avoid the godless people around us. I was even told that not only should I avoid anti-Christian influence, I was even told to avoid secular music altogether! I was told that evolution is a lie. It was just bullshit piled on bullshit, supported by fear and enforced ignorance.

    Again, I realize that you were most likely being ironic, but there are many people that this would be lost on, as they are too brainwashed in their own ideology to realize that their faith is just as stupid and every bit as odious as any cult out there.

You don't dick with the Pope, or you get burned, that's the deal.

    As it is, historically, it seems that the farther people get removed from the Catholic church, the more people get killed. Let's say, sure, that the Catholics killed a couple of dudes in the Inquisition. Cry me a river. I'm sure I could actually write a few pages on this family.

    I know a transgender person who got told to leave his church. He decided to go anyways because he was ok with who he was. There was quite a bit of talking and he felt pretty uncomfortable so he decided not to return again. Unfortunately in the parking lot he was actually called an abomination and was spat on.

    And lastly my girlfriend who left her church was ignored and told it was a phase and that she should grow up. She was made to stay in her room during christmas ... until her little sister also left the church. Then she was treated as scum, she was the anti-christ. They gave up on her completely and many of her cousins and grandparents actually disowned her. Her folks are from PA and TX.

    As I understand it, a pyramid scheme involves money going from many (at the bottom) to the few (at the top) with everyone along the way getting their cut. I am not aware of any other religion having such a characteristic. There are many religions organizations that seek donations (whether it at a Shinto shrine or a church). However, (faults aside) the priests and monks who would be "at the top" are not exactly enjoying riches like Madoff was.
