Don't be fooled by movies like Short Circuit, Johnny Five is just the cuddly cute teddy bear version of a killer robot to get you to lower your guard. And now our government wants to combine the godless killing power of a robot with a teddy bearbot? What, as if the left isn't already dangerous enough, now you've got to give them another weapon? They're trying to fool us with the teddy bear head but real Americans won't fall for it! I'm working on my own plan to counteract this weapon, something involving a bald eagle with a shark taped to it's head. since society benefits the individual evolution ought to favor traits that help form and maintain societies. For instance: faith and altruism.
The problem with that idea is that as soon as a selfish person comes along, he immediately has an advantage over the rest of the altruistic "suckers" and has a selective advantage. His "selfishness" genes get passed onto his children while yours are less likely. Eventually altruism will get out-competed. There has to be additional factors for it to work, such as kin-selection in small populations.

The idea of selection for religious faith is an interesting one as well. It often makes me wonder if it's not a case of the "tail wagging the dog". For the last thousands of years there has been huge selective pressure to conform to various religious beliefs...think of the the Dark ages, the Inquisition, countless slaughters of godless heathens. Back in the day you'd better be in church on Sundays or you'd find yourself over a pile of kindling or at the bottom of the river tied to a large rock.

Just remember: not everyone who partakes in Christianity (big C or little c) believes the world was created 4,000 years ago. Some of us actually believe in evolution.

Do you know what double think is? You saying you believe in God, yet you believe in evolution. This is conflict of terms if you understood fully both sides. Simply put, how can you say you believe the Bible, when you don't doubt the first verse? Are you lacking the faith in the Bible or cowardly trying to appease both side of the issues?

To find the truth, we must want to follow the truth, not our friends. If what they teach us in school is true, why do we find T-Rex bones with flexible veins? Cave painting of dinosaurs? Figures of dinosaurs? Tracks of humans and dinosaurs? Why does the Bible speak of in Job? Why do we find dinosaurs bones above horses, pig, human tools, and other things? And there are many others. You just have to go searching for them.

Also, the theory of evolution was loved by materialists to promote materialism (the belief that physical matter is the only reality). Marx loved the Darwin and the theory of evolution. He credited Darwin work in providing a basis for his ideas. His godless ideas brought the death of millions. Darwin himself was very out spoken about God. The basis of macro evolution is based on the lowest levels of proof.

It's arguable as to whether Hitler himself was "actually" a Christian, but the Nazi ideology was explicitly, militantly, and absolutely Christian.

The holocaust followed step by step the plan laid out by Martin Luther, father of protestantism, in his book, "The Jews and Their Lies". Hell, Kristallnacht was on his birthday.
Hitler was absolutely a huge promoter of Christianity since he was absolutely opposed to the "godless commies".

So, yeah, the OP is either completely ignorant of the entire history of anti-semitism in Christianity or just a liar.

Christians are quite eager to deny the role their religion played in a couple thousand years of slow roasting jews alive, which the holocaust was merely the culmination of. In that respect they're even worse than the holocaust deniers.

It's all good. Lewis and Nietzsche: the one argues for God the other against. I must say, of all dead philosophers and thinkers of old, nietzsche is the best read. /digress.

Lewis's point, I believe, is that morality has always consisted of a basic belief in a higher being to which we must answer -- a higher thing if you will. He uses The Tao to emphasize this. Without it, morality, quite simply, doesn't exist. Fire cannot burn without fuel if you will (my analogy). He mentions castration and then a demanding that the gelding bear fruit.

If you will: once God is gone, people design their own morality and/or, no morality. It may be called morality, but it really isn't.

I would like to list examples, but that's risky. I could explain ww2 germany (nietzsche's influence) stalinism or pol pot (sic?), but again, those are risky, and most folks tend to try and label religion as just as bloody and humanless, but I beleive this isn't the case under examination (more than anything, religion has always tended to right itself, whereas godless systems haven't shown that as of yet).

In any event, lewis's book, Abolition of Man, needs to be read in whole. I believe I mislead you by posting only that chapter which is just part of the whole. His emphasis there -- regarding nature -- is, in part, to simply point out the flawed thinking in believing our growing understanding of the universe justifies the death of The Tao, of God....

Good discussion none-the-less, and I always enjoy a mature person on /.....
