Ottawa Linux Symposium 2000

Anonymous Coward writes "Looks like a good lineup of speakers. Should be fun again this year." It takes place July 19-22. I was there last year, and had a fantastic time. Highly recommended.

    This is interesting..The trolls are having a hey day with a Canadian story. Is it because they feel insecure? Do they know already know enough Canadians to be scared for their own good. Are they trying to get back at all their Canadian friends for every jab at Americans the Canuks ever leveled at them? Or are they worried that a Canadian will take their job/livelihood away. I don't know the answer. For the trolls out there...try and say something that hasen't been said about Kanada yet...be funny...be original...don't just recycle the cliches....

    Have you ever been to Canada? If so incorporate it into your troll. We might laugh. If its real!

      The higher minority population "down here" causes a higher murder rate. Americans are not all one people, you must understand that. That is why quality of living is lower then most other Western countries. Price of being the Bastion of the Free. At least thats how refugees see the US. Nobody really like the Police but if the Police were gone people would want them back. Just wait til the Chinese take over the US, then what will the Canadians do? Probably backstab the rest of the world and submit to Communism. We are not below you no matter how much you wish we are.. just turn the map upside down.. don't worry, you won't fly out into space.

    Well IMO they can't really be called American before age 10.. These are just little kids who hijaacked their daddy's computer. Maybe it is all one person. Personally, I can't really think that someone would spend the time to push reload on Slashdot all day just to get some first posts and flood a few threads. I just don't get it.     You don't know these are Americans you stupid Canuk. These could be people of some other nationality trying to make Americans look bad (as most people not in US seem to enjoy doing). Talk about stereotyping.. you fool. I could go on and on but that would just lower myself down to your level no wouldn't it? Ignorant and vocal? American kids have better access to technology at school etc, so of course they come visit Slashdot and post some trolls, just as any foolish kid would do.

    Candians are the same people, they just have a government that taxes them to death so it makes it tough to be greedy. Americans are not all one people. Far from it. You can't use the word "American" really, because there are so many different cultures that that term would bring unfair stereotyping.

    Both the Ottawa and Montreal region are great IT places but I think you'd be better in Montreal. Life is better there. Bar closes at 3 A.M. instead of 1 A.M in Ontario. (duh why close at 1 AM when everyone is goin out at 11 PM ?). People are more friendly and know how to have fun. I've heard that from people living in Toronto/Ottawa. There are lot of big names in MTL.

    Wow. Americans actually DO think they beat canadians at everything.
    Canada, as it turns out, was the first country in the world to connect
    every school in the country to the internet. They finished the rural schools last year.
    Before that, most urban schools were on the net by 1996.

    Why do you trolls even bother? Do you always have to bash everything? This is news for nerds, not news for retards! Why must everyone screw around in life! You probably think you are cool by finding that "kanaduh" almost sounds like "Canada". I am proud to be Canadian and I do not have to take this crap. We as Canadians get very annoyed when Americans try their hardest (a feable attempt as it is) to put down other things. These American's actions do not justify the actions of all other Americans. Canadians perceive when a troll makes a comment like "Crapanda Sucks" or some mindless idiotic thing, that that they speak for all other Americans. I live on the Canadian/American border and most of the Americans I have talked to are nice people. It is trolls like you that give America a bad reputation.

    Wow.. that is a good point.. to be fair, canada can't either. I was speaking of the provinces. in the territories, Yukon, NWT, and Nunavit, there are reomote regions where it is physically impossible to have internet access.

    In Saskatchewan, where I live I have seen snow in every month except August. I have come to the conclusion that Alberta has strange weather paterns due to it's position near the mountains. When it snows in the summer here, it's ususally rain on a cold day that melts the second it hits the ground.

    You know, the reason /index.html doesn't link to /2000 is that the site is not ready or "released" yet (I know the organizer). That's why there's talks like "High availability blahblahblah" and "Mike talks about something" in there. They'll get fixed eventually as soon as the speakers finalize their topics.

    I'm definately coming (over the atlantic too) if I can fit it into my schedule (and I'll try damn hard to make it fit). Last year was just so incredibly fun.

    (Sorry 'bout the slight off-topic, this was too good a chance...)

    Yeah, I'm in a similar situation (plan to graduate about one week before the show, but from a Dutch university). Looks like a great place to meet & greet the local IT crowd. (Networking's all that counts :-) ).
    So Ottawa is the place to be for IT-guys? I was thinking of Montreal, but hints about the best place to be for IT are greatly appreciated. Good to hear anyway they've got

      I've been visiting both over a year ago, investigating how it would be to move there from the Netherlands (I moved to Switserland btw, not to Canada).

      Ottawa was by far the nicest town IMO. Montreal was second, but the problem there is that you're in Quebec. If you don't speak french very well you'll be in a bad position, as the Quebec govt really tries to separate from Canada and to eradicate the use of non-french.

      Also Ottawa clearly has more high-tech firms and better IT possibilities. In general, Ontario's economy is strong and improving, taxes are lower. Quebec, preoccupied with language wars and such, is going down and it's future doesn't seem to look so good. Lots of companies have left Quebec, because there are weird laws forcing them to only advertise in french and things like that.

    I did the Eastern Canada tour three years ago (Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa) with my wife. All the cities impressed me greatly, but Ottawa was especially beautiful.

    I was at the last OLS, Corel sponsered it as well, all they had was a simple sign that said "Corel", and I think they gave away a copy of wordperfect.

    This is not a trade show, and Corel realizes that. I hope that they do sponser it again this year, because it ain't cheap to bring in a bunch of speakers, and rent rooms in a nice Hotel for the talks...also there is _tons_ of free beer at OLS!

    I am also a member of the Ottawa LUG, it has been around for longer than Corel has been interested in Linux, and they don't participate too much with us...from what I can remember over the past year they have gave away a few copies of WP (I got one :), and paid for a few buses to drive us down to Montreal for an Installfest and gave us a few copies of their beta 2 Corel Linux.

    About what you said about Americans, I would have to agree, but all the IPO's are based on American greed, rather than their self centered-ness.

    to the success of Linux and OSS in the market place. There is an unfortunate tendency for those in the U.S to act as if they are the center of all that is Linux and OSS ( a side effect of the America tendency to look mostly inwards); this is borne out by the recent Linux IPO's. With this Symposium we see/hear indications of the great progress and inroads that Linux/OSS is making elsewhere in the world. Naturally I for one am very happy about this - it means that Toronto can't be far behind for a Linux expo (hopefully held over the weekend so I can stay for the whole event!). Of course I would be somewhat leery about this - remember that Ottawa is Corel's home town and with the recent Corel/Inprise(?)/Borland (whatever they are now) merger, they doubtless want as much Linux oriented positive spin out as possible. I didn't see any mention of Corel in the article but the fact that there is a solid LUG in Ottawa and Corel being focused in Ottawa does sound a little coincidental..

    I just wish there were more Linux-related events, especially ones geared towards educating the newbies.

While the lineup looks interesting, the promos look cheesy, and that may very well prevent it from being taken seriously. But then again, I haven't used up the travel expense budget yet, and they're promising no snow... Nice thought, after having my car doors frozen shut the other day.
