I ran OS/2 Warp back in 1994 or whatever it was. Much better than the Windows offering back then, and I had a great experience with it. I am interested in seeing it, but won't be moving over to it. I'm very happy wiht linux right now.
I got really excited until I saw it was from a JJ disciple. But hey. You never know
I think this is interesting. The old-guard TV networks are probably scrambling to get their foot in the door of the subscription/streaming thing. They probably didn't fear Netflix when they were only showing movies, but the moment they started producing their own content, things changed. Then the ante got upped when Amazon Prime signed the Top Gear guys. The question is, is it too late for someone like CBS or any of the old-guard TV network to enter this arena? CBS needed a signature show to christen the streaming service, but will anyone latch onto something not called Netfix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu? Is this a case of out with the old, and in with the new? I guess we shall see.
I think a new Star Trek television show is long overdue, but I am not sure it can survive in the highly competitive streaming space. Hopefully if it doesn't thrive on the streaming service, they will have the good sense to move it to the regular network.
Let's see. MS is already the largest developer of software on the planet, one of the biggest corporations on the planet, and Gates is the wealthiest man on the planet (maybe in the solar system). Do they really need the little bit of extra publicity that this silly trick will provide?
And some people think cigarette smoke is harmless.
In fact, one of the joys of my job was the listening to the dolphins that were attracted by the Sonar. They certainly didn't appear stressed.
That's great, except we're talking about WHALES here. And how do you know they weren't stressed? Just because it might not have seemed to be harming them, doesn't mean that it wasn't. Perhaps they were swimming towards you to communicate with you to STOP using the sonar (in whatever sort of communication they use).
In the end, it was determined the whales beached themselves trying to get away from the shipping traffic, not the Sonar.
How was it that this was determined? Did you ask the whales or something? Later in your post you state that no one knows why whales beach themselves, thereby invalidating the argument that we know it wasn't sonar, but shipping that caused the Canary Island incident.
It's a frivolous lawsuit by a bunch of folks that have nothing better to do than hate their own government.
This is always the classic argument against anyone group protesting the government's actions. It assumes that our government would NEVER do anything wrong, and that these environmental groups are all US hating pinkos. That sort of argument is just an appeal to emotion, and is NOT rational debate, and therefore has no purpose.
I agree. And several people I know constantly wonder out loud whether Google will be able to keep up their "do no evil" motto.
My answer to that is: I suspect not. They are a publically traded company now, no? That means they answer to their shareholders now. What usually follows is ugly.
This news really saddens me. But I will say this. I read a great book about a year ago about the design and building of Sojourner, the rover that accompanied Pathfinder to Mars, and I recall a part about there not always being enough work for the engineers that they had. It would not be uncommon for a project to end, and for someone to not have a project in which to go.
Hey, I guess you can have an unjust war based on lies, or you can have science, but not both. Throw a hurricane in and it all really goes to hell.
I guess this is typical corporate behavior. Apple has always to enforced their business model through tight reigns on both the hardware and software. Perhaps if Yahoo makes a dent in their music store business they will see that people prefer freedom.
However, I do like the fact that Jobs has been refusing to bend to the music industry's pressure.
Well... let's just hope the Google motto rules the day.
Don't be evil. (or something like that)
However, in a market economy where ruthlessness is required to protect assets, I don't see how Google can compete with a company like MS, WITHOUT being evil. The question it, how will the fallout affect normal people. Will the fallout be evil?
I watched the Firefly pilot when it aired a few years back, and I'm sure I'm going to get some flack for this, but I prefer the clean, art-deco look of Star Trek.
I love my Palm, but I have to admit that I primarily use it to store phone numbers. Unfortunately, inexpensive cell phones came along that do a lot of the same things as my Palm (not to mention Palm built a cell phone IN a Palm).
IBM once ruled the computer market, then the desktop PC revolution happened, then clones happened.
This may seem hard to believe, but one day, MS will not rule the OS market. The question is, will Slashdot atrribute it to something they did wrong?:-)
MS needs to be put in their place, and to a small degree Google has been doing that. It will be interesting to see for how long Google can withstand MS's onslaught.

I thought his article was called "I don't believe Sonar hurts whales".
m mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
That seems to be the thrust ("main point") of his argument (or why else would he have called it that?)
I didn't see him cite ANY evidence or studies about whale populations.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe the NRDC just wants to save the whales from being killed by deadly sound waves?

So how does this redefine the phrase COMPACT CAR?
Is it really correct to say that it's lost again, since they never truly knew where it was?

Who actually started this tabbed bowsing thing? I thought Opera had tabs before Firefox?
I'm still waiting for an explanation of who built the Antikythera Mechanism. Was it Archimedes or not?
They should just put DVD burners in the Cable Boxes and save postage.
This satellite would have shown that ice levels were shrinking, bolstering the argument for global warming.
:-)
Then again, they're ignoring all of the evidence now, why would this have mattered?

Is there anyone here who would actually USE this?
Apparently it's OK to give Walmart tax-free access to land to build ugly stores with low-paying jobs, but it's not OK to do this?
Our system is incredible. People can't afford to pay their bills and taxes, and cities need the tax revenue.
This will all reach critical mass within the next 50 years, and it will be ugly.
We always knew that Da Vinci was ahead of his time. Now we know just how far. :-)

I will go see it, however.
Google has secretly been launching recon satellites into orbit around the moon, and will soon be unveliling their Google Moon satellite maps.
The Palm slid for one simple inescapable reason.
:-)
Things change, times change.

I seem to recall reading about this once before. It sounds like an interesting idea, but what are the real advantages over, say, LCD?
My only other thought is: Save an eTree.

Hey, I read the media that tells the truth, but who cares? The MASSES need to be shown the truth, not me.
