  1. No bobby, sorry on Bobby Fischer Online? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Unfortunately, Bobby Fischer was made the "Elvis of chess" by many frustrated American chess fans who feel even more uncomfortable that their own national team mostly consists of Soviet born and bred players.

Fischer was vas a very strong player, but mostly psychologically superior to his opponents during 2 years only (1970-72), outside that time his successes were not outstanding. The dominations of Lasker between 1896-1914 (and possibly 1923-24), of Alekhine (1927-1933) and Karpov (1975-85) are more remarkable in my opinion.

I saw the games mentioned in the article. Computer was used by someone who also understands chess. It could possibly be Fischer using a computer, though.

He is a very dangerously sick schizo, and it is good for the chessworld and the whole world that he is hiding somewhere, not propagating his ideas instead.

  3. Computers can't play chess. on Brain vs. Computer: Place Your Bets · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, computers still cannot play chess as a whole game. They can easily be tricked and beaten by a way no human player of any decent level can be ever beaten. Just a little study of each chess program and voilas the way to kick it is found. That was proven by german chessplayer of expert strength (which is a rank below master) Edward Nemeth. You can read this story (which requires just a minimal chess understanding) here, item #129 and the author of the site has some other very interesting notes on the topic elsewhere in his diary. I wholeheartedly agree with him that computers are of excellent help in chess analysis, though!

  5. Freedom is a function of maturity and education on Is The U.S. No Longer The Choice For Freedom? · · Score: 1
I am not a US resident. I live in Israel, where the freedom of a citizen is doubtfully of a democratic standard (one has to serve in the military, you can't normally marry if not by the Jewish orthodox laws, which also means that an Israeli Jewish citizen can't marry a non-Jewish spouse in an easy way, etc.)

But, for most of the Israeli population, it seems, the laws fit. I think they are not so fitting in the US, where the courts' involvement in people life seems to be ridiculous.

From what I've seen in my life and in through talking to people it looks that the very democracy and freedom is in Holland and Scandinavian countries, and an absolute freedom, where government lacks sometimes the control you do WANT (law enforcement) used to be in Russia, especially in Moscow, until the very recent times.

In fact, the most "convenient", "natural" keyboard was proposed by a pilot some decades ago. The idea of it is a five keys keyboard (one per finger) which you just lay your hand upon. All symbols were entered as a combination of 1, 2 or 3 strokes by various fingers.

But it turned out that, though quite useful for a regular user that does not need to input the data intensively, the idea fails when one needs to type extremely fast, especially in stenography. I think the same will happen here.

  10. IOC innocent compared to FIDE on IOC Clamps Down on Athlete Web Diaries · · Score: 1
FIDE - World Chess Federation has been doing things much worse than that. Led by president of Kalmykia (southern Russia part) Kirsan Ilumzhinov who has been suspected in numerous mafia-like actions and is in fact a typical dictator in his country. Ilumzhinov was elected when FIDE was wrecked by its previous president to immense financial debts which he mostly paid from his own (read Kalmykian) money. Kasparov, the World #1, calls him a gangster and boycotts FIDE events.

Now, Ilumzhinov tries to popularize chess in some inconventional ways, for example to allow chess to be an olympic event (it's a question whether it will be more honor to chess or to IOC) - and an exhibition chess match was played during these games in Sydney. Chess has its own Olympic games of glorious 75 years tradition, which are held every two years and attract above one hundred countries and one thousand participants, and the genre of a chess event is quite contrary to the genre and spirit of traditional olympic events - no noise, no close crowd, no bright photographing is allowed during chess games. Even the doping control has an entirely different meaning in chess!

Now, in order to establish a steadier income, FIDE went to an unprecedented move to change the copyright (C) of the chess games played. Prior to that the game moves - which are often extremely useful source of chess information bore no copyright and were generally widely available for everyone. FIDE stated that the players played the game hold the (C) to the moves and if they want they may disallow publishing of that game elsewhere without their permission and/or payment to them. This rule was almost never enforced though, as the chess players understand its ridiculousness...

  11. Apply the Peter's Principle on Moving From Tech Into Management? · · Score: 1

The main danger in advancing the career into the management area is turning out INCOMPETENT in the new position due to requirement of completely new skills and thus falling under the glorious Peter's Principle. One should check what would be his/her duties after the possible promotion and after such analysis it could be that you'd want to refuse such a promotion.

If someone wants to target a career up the administrative hierarchy it could be worth to attempt first a minor managerial position, such like project management, to try extensively the administrative skills. I was lucky that I was forced to such position during my military service - right in between my IT-career.

Moreover one might want to reread the books on management - like the mentioned above Peter's Principle, or Carnegie.

Still porting MFC to gtk wasn't what I wanted so I refused, but it was nice to see another company turning its face towards Linux, as they were realizing (as I was told) it'll be much cheaper for both the company to develop and to shops to buy and maintain a Linux-based system than a MS-based one

  14. More Live, less studio, also less money (oh well) on The Dark Side Of Napster · · Score: 1

The point with everything that can be turned and reprinted as a digital data - software, books, songs etc. is that when you have to pay for it to get it, the author doesn't need to produce anymore than he/she already did. This is main reason of huge earnings by SW companies, Movies, singers etc.
But the age of easily reprinted and distributed digital data should force that source of income to fail.
    1) Software - well, we all know that the software should be free, and the software companies should not charge for bytes.
    2) Books - already are being reprinted all over the internet and this may really cause a crisis of writers' incomes. Then, there're still are people - like me, that prefer reading a real book and not even a paper print. Also this will probably cause the writers to reach out more frequently to the readers and make such meetings payable (oh, a LIVE appearance of the writer) and live from it.
    3) Singers - LIVE performances and meetings should become the source of income, also remember the advertisments they take part in etc.
4....) Video, Paintings, Magazines - will be bound to have a new fate as well.

  15. SF dream coming true? on The Internet is America-centric, But for How Long · · Score: 1

Science Fiction writers often proposed in
the future a global worldly organization ruling
    the entire Earth.

As we see, with amount of countries rather more
increasing in the past years than diminishing,
probably the human nature and the desire for
power, even in a smaller space, makes this idea
    of the writers to fail.

But, with global Internet everywhere, a true
central ruling organization of the entire
Internet must appear. It should be, for its own
good be more interested and focused on the
prosperity of the Internet as a whole and not
lobbying interests of specific countries, since
Internet has already wiped many of borders.

Then, if such organization gains momentum and power
because more of our everyday life becomes wired to
the data communications it may start forcing the
governments of the countries going the organization's
way and turning into the ruling organ the science
    fiction writers dreamed of.

  17. Don't be yourself on Men Playing as Women · · Score: 1

I've run into a lot of players that use
female characters in MUDs. This playing has
two aspects - the pure game, where I can
understand the curiosity of trying a female
character like you try different race.

But there's as well social aspect of behaviour
and sometimes in MUDs people attempt to get
much more personal, and if here one attempts
to continue to pretend being a female and
playing along then there's some abnormal
in him in real life as well.

Of course there's a category of players who
just want to embarrass other guys in any possible
ways, and there are even teams of male gamers
from one site that decide to play females all
    along to pull someone's leg.

I never played as a female. But I played as a
neuter being which also has some fun because
it offers unique RP abilities. Now,
I am asking myself, am I not queerest? ;))

As for solo RPGs or combat games I can't state
an opinion because I never played one.

criteria are that black plays only with

2nd or 3rd rank to receive a check. We find
out that it's impossible just to stalemate the
king ready for a mate and we have to join in
    some other pieces.

By analogy with previous puzzle we attempt to
join in the queen and use the d-file. Alas,
