  1. Zero. on The 'Back' Button the Most Clicked Firefox Icon · · Score: 1

In Opera, it's right button down, left button click to go back, left button down, right click to go forward. Always.
It's the same in Firefox, until Firefox gets updated and the gestures plugin is broken for a few weeks until the maintainers fix it for the new firefox version.
Going to IE is a nightmare. Then it's right click, click Back on the right-click menu.
Once you get used to mouse gestures, you wonder why anyone would ever waste so much mouse mileage going up to the Back button all the time.

Hi... I recently read one of Victor Hugo's lesser known works, Toilers Of The Sea. I enjoyed it and recommend it for any fan of Hugo. It kind of reminded me of Jude The Obscure meets Swiss Family Robinson.

Anyway, this story reminds me of this book because of a fierce battle this guy has with a giant (or at least really big) octopus. The main strategic point to keep in mind; don't fight the arms, go for the head.

  8. What FILES are. on What Should People Understand About Computers? · · Score: 1

This seems to be the biggest mystery for many.

Explain what files are. Explain what programs are. Explain that you use programs to open/run/play files. Explain that files go places, most usually on the hard drive, and they're sorted into directories, or 'folders' if you insist. Explain that everything is kept in files one way or another. The computer doesn't just magically know everything.

From there you could also explain how files are loaded into memory, saved, deleted, copied, moved, etc.

So, that makes me think, maybe you made the PC version free, and are going to concentrate on the mobile versions, which you probably really make money on. Does this mean that the free PC version will stagnate? Or will future versions be built, with fun new features?

Also... how about a new logo? Or maybe a cross-marketing deal with Oprah?

    Thanks!

Actually.... this is for in-house use, not to be sold, given away, shared, etc. Everything I/we build is exclusively for in-house use, as I don't work for a software development firm. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of geeks aren't employed by "solution providers" but by other types of companies to build/maintain in-house stuff.

But still... I think MySQL will really take off more when the scheduling thing is put into place. MS SQL Server may be proprietary and etc., but when you're loaded down with a lot of tasks, it's a lot easier to build DTS tasks and schedule them as jobs than to jerry-rig a MySql solution with stored procedures and batch files. Just today I decided doing something with MySql just wasn't worth the bother - I do have full versions of MS SQL Server at my disposal. Though, it appears that Visual Studio 2005 doesn't like MS SQL Server pre-2000.... grrr...

  16. male game players want to be women on On The Feminine Form In Gaming · · Score: 1

An over-simplification, perhaps, but, look at it this way.

The typical male gamer (and they are the majority) have shunned what society has defined as normal, acceptible male behavior and attire. As such, they are pretty much gender-neutral, and as likely to wish to portray themselves as women as men in games. Furthermore, the fact that they have shunned society's male "costume/custom" indicates that they lean towards being female to begin with. But, in the real world, they have male characteristics that prevent them (mostly), from exploring their femininity; physical gender (genitalia, physical build, facial hair, et), societal roles (son, brother, father). So, the artificial world of a game is a perfectly safe place for them to explore their femininity.
They can choose to be super-duper elite women (smart, courageous, wise, etc), or just sexy, with big bossoms and etc. Or, maybe both, say in the form of that Tomb Raider character, or the main character on the tv show Alias (though not a game, similar escapist mechanism).

That's just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary.
