Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Lego

I love calculus!
Nice! It IS a silly place, but very fun.
Lego and Linux both start with 'L'. Both are enjoyed primarily by homosexual goatse-loving morons. Is this a coincidence?

I watched this once it popped up on Ain't It Cool News (aintitcool.com) yesterday. Imagine CGI but with Legos. It looked more fluid than the old stop-motion clay-based creatures, yet I could see no obvious wires or such. It seemed very fluid, and yes, it was freaky due to the level of (I hate to say it) professionalism.
Next thing you know, we'll have Connectix emulating Matrix, GI Joe re-creating the Gulf War, and Lincon Logs re-enacting the chopping of the cherry tree!

Anybody else sick of Lego and Python?
This is an understandable response to the horror and its effect on slashdot. It is an attempt to create a common culture among geeks.
Well I think everyone should look at the debates on the Slashdot site about the WTC bombing, and look at all the different perspectives, and you will see that we all come from very differenet cultures and these cultures determine our views on important questions. We cannot really create a common culture with Nerf, Athlon, Linux, Monty Python, or Star Wars.
I think that the slashdot editors are posting stories like this in order to bring back together a community which could easily fracture over the WTC retaliation arguments and arguments about safety, liberty and security.
It is far more important to work through these arguments than to distract readers from them. This site has a constituency with the most chance of any to shed light on all perspectives of security and freedom questions, at least w/r/t technology.
Although slashdot editors might not like >1K comments in a story, those threads will be more useful, and the conclusions from them more lasting, if we post these stories instead of Monty Python crap. Let the front page have space for these debates, and sideline Monty and Legos into the humor section.

I knew I'd seen this somewhere before...
As Andrea withdrew herself further from me, I was obligated both by my vow, and my love for her to continue to be her friend, no matter the cost to our friendship. I watched in agony as she went through trial after trial, refusing to let me help or even listen. She avoided me, she ignored me, she came close to even lying to me (which is something she never does). I went through this hellish experience for several months. I thought it would get better. It did not. It only got worse. Now, I have very few virtues, but one of the ones that I do lay claim to is I am a man (or boy, if you must) or my word. I do not lie and I try my absolute best to keep my promises. I was tied to her by a vow, I could not leave her alone. I had to stay with her, unwanted baggage, and continue to accept whatever punishment she wished to inflict upon me.
Then, an apparent way out appeared. Andrea met a guy named Michael. Now, I did not find out about this immediately. In fact, it took some piecing together of facts to figure this out. First, I called Andrea Saturday to see if she wanted to do something with a mutual friend and myself. She said she had plans. Fine, I mean, it's not like she was obligated to do anything with me but I was curious. I asked her what she was doing. She said she was doing something with a friend. It was obvious she didn't want to name this friend, so a let it drop. Later that day while I raked the yard with a friend of mine, a car I didn't know drove by and honked at us. We figured it was Andrea and her friend and went back to raking. The next day at school, Andrea came up to me (a rarity in, and of itself) and said she had seen me and my friend raking. I then mentioned we heard the car and figured it was her. I made the mistake of asking who she had been with, she suddenly turned around and walked away without a word. Apparently I was supposed to be blind, deaf, and stupid. I let the matter die.
Later, I overheard some of her friends talking about Michael, this new guy she had met. She had gone to the prom with him (he went to a different school), I also overheard that that was who she had been with when the mysterious car had honked. I figured it was a taboo subject for me so I didn't ask. I knew I wouldn't get anywhere and would probably just anger her more (why I don't know). Anyway, it was about this time I got news from my father that he had received a good job offer from a company in Raleigh, NC. I was reluctant to go. NH was the first place I'd ever felt like I belonged. Andrea was in NH. I couldn't abandon her. I voted against leaving. My father asked for a reason, and he wanted a logical reason involving cold, hard facts, NOT feelings and a promise. I stalled. My father gave me a period of time to decide and give him a reason. The night before I had to give him my answer, our high school choir was performing their last concert of the year. Andrea and I were both in the choir. During the concert I was racked with indecision. I got through the performance and was going to talk it over with my good friend Josh. As we sat in my car and discussed it, Andrea came over with Michael to introduce him to me. We were introduced, and he seemed like a nice guy, even through my intense jealousy. I decided that he would be capable hands to leave Andrea in. After driving home the long way and thinking it over, I cast my vote to leave NH.

Enough said. Go check the previous comments of this poster before handing out "Insightful" moderations like $3 crack.
finally, something to put my faith back behind the human race. figures it was monty python that did it. hehe.
on a more sensible note:
i've read a few comments bashing both monty python and lego in the preceding threads. these people just simply need to understand that lego is news for nerds, and monty python IS stuff that matters. the original python stuff was mostly political satire and the like. it was funny...but it was also relevant. although it may have lost some of that relevance in its move across the pond to the states, the ideas behind the python group live on...the social satire melded into hilarious comedy. its something that works. don't bash it.
as for lego...we all grew up on lego. as we get older, the company seems to offer more and more toys for us to use...and we, as a community, seem to come up with more innovative ways to use them. personally, i believe that lego promotes problem solving ability as well as sheer fun. as i've said previously: don't bash it.
thus, only one conclusion can be drawn from this:
MONTY PYTHON FSCKING ROCKS THE LEGO HOUSE!
Funny, I went to see the MPATHG re-release in the theatre last night, and after the Camelot scene, my friend turned to me and said "I think I liked the Lego one better!"

Remember, DVDs are evil! They won't let you copy them because the movie studios are evil and actually expect to be paid for spending millions of dollars to make a movie for people to see. And they won't let you view them on the .5% of computers which run Linux, either. Don't support DVDs!

I was really surprised and impressed at some of the thoughtful, probing discussion of the terrorist attacks on Slashdot. Unlike many of the respondents to your post, I really do think the discussion is important.
... well, honestly, I don't care a rat's ass about the Xbox, so I just skip those articles. This astonishing power of indifference is available to you, too: if you are sick of the WTC, or Legos, or Monty Python, or Jon Katz ... don't read the frickin' article! The editors of Slashdot can only suggest topics of discussion; they can't make people care. Geek culture will emerge on its own, in all its quirky multifacted yummy goodness.
However, humor is important too. It reminds us of our humanity, and keeps us sane -- which, in the current rush for military retalitation, is a very important thing. If we can laugh for a moment, we may find our perspective on the serious is a bit more balanced when we return to it.
Neither the serious nor the silly is out of place here. And as for the "attempt to create a geek culture"
Another funny lego movie is Legos are not Enough. I saw this at a film festival, and it beat out all the other 'serious' films, even though it was made by a bunch of engineering students whereas its competition was made by people who wore a lot of black clothing.

/. had stories about the WTC crises when there were things we would do to help, and when there were new developments. But this site is supposed to be "news for nerds", and there's nothing wrong with posting a funny story. If you want to debate the WTC crises, excellent - we do need to talk about this as a society. But /. is not always the place to talk about it.
/. was made for.
This story wasn't posted to save the community or some such thing - it was posted because it is a funny nerdy story, the sort of thing

Though you need to be more careful with your parenthesis: (1/2)*(x^4*exp(x^2)-x^2*exp(x^2)+exp(x^2)). Also, don't forget your arbitrary constant of integration!
Anyway, /. needs more math geeks, good to see somebody who knows what's important in life (mathematics) posting here.

Use Windows. Chances are you already have a CD around, so it won't cost you a cent. Oh, and IE 6 is *years* ahead of any browser available for Linux, and Windows Media codecs get far better compression and sound quality than the stupid MPEG and Quicktime codecs.

A large tank is partially filled with 100 gallons of fluid in which 10 pounds of salt is dissolved. Brine containing 1/2 pound of salt per gallon is pumped into the tank at a rate of 6 gal/min. The well-mixed solution is then pumped out at a slower rate of 4 gal/min. Find the number of pounds of salt in the tank after 30 minutes.
(The answer is ~64.38 pounds). Have fun!

It runs the plugins in a Wine session, has it's own compact setup utility and is absolutely one of the best applications I've ever bought for my Linux system.
Oh, Did I mention you have to purchase it? it's 30USD for the cd, or 20USD for the downloadable version.
Know also if you purchase it you are supporting a company who happens to be the major financial backer for the Wine Project.

Why do you need complex numbers to integrate a real function? The answer is of course:

If its open source what's stoping someone else burning pkg CDs with all the info in the book in a txt file or 2, then flogging it at half the price the Connectix or whatever programmers are flogging their pkg CDs for, & then not giving the coders a cut at all?
f you think it's wrong to have to pay to access video files then, heck, I'm sympathetic, but the only way you're going to be able to avoid it is if folks help to support projects like Ogg Tarkin.
Free software is something you give, not something you can take. If the CodeWeavers folks have done good work, there's not a thing in the world wrong with them charging for it.
