This is a commencement speech made by Anna Quindlen at Villanova:

It's a great honor for me to be the third member of my family to receive an honorary doctorate from this great university. It's an honor to follow my great Uncle Jim, who was a gifted physician, and my Uncle Jack, who is a remarkable businessman. Both of them could have told you something important about their professions, about medicine or commerce.

I have no specialized field of interest or expertise, which puts me at a disadvantage talking to you today. I'm a novelist. My work is human nature. Real life is all I know. Don't ever confuse the two, your life and your work. The second is only part of the first. Don't ever forget what a friend once wrote Senator Paul Tsongas when the senator decided not to run for re-election because he had been diagnosed with cancer "No man ever said on his deathbed I wish I had spent more time at the office." Don't ever forget the words my father sent me on a postcard last year "If you win the rat race, you're still a rat."

Or what John Lennon wrote before he was gunned down in the driveway of the Dakota "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans."

You will walk out of here this afternoon with only one thing that no one else has. There will be hundreds of people out there with your same degree; there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you will be the only person alive who has sole custody of your life.

Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk, or your life on a bus, or in a car, or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank account but your soul.

People don't talk about the soul very much anymore. It's so much easier to write a resume than to craft a spirit. But a resume is a cold comfort on a winter night, or when you're sad, or broke, or lonely, or when you've gotten back the test results and they're not so good.

Here is my resume:

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe.

I show up.

I listen.

I try to laugh.

I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows mean
what they say.

I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me.

Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today, because I would be a cardboard cutout. But I call them on the phone, and I meet them for lunch. I would be rotten, or at best mediocre at my job, if those other things were not true. You cannot be really first rate at your work if your work is all you are.

So here's what I wanted to tell you today:

Get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Do you think you'd care so very much about those things if you blew an aneurysm one afternoon, or found a lump in your breast?

Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze over Seaside Heights, a life in which you stop and watch how a red tailed hawk circles over the water or the way a baby scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a Cheerio with her thumb and first finger. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you.

And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. Get a life in which you are generous. And realize that life is the best thing ever, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take money you would have spent on beers and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Be a big brother or sister. All of you want to do well. But if you do not do good too, then doing well will never be enough. It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, our minutes. It is so easy to take for granted the color of our kids' eyes, the way the melody in a symphony rises and falls and disappears and rises again. It is so easy to exist instead of to live.

I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my druthers, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all. I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned that it is not a dress rehearsal, and that today is the only guarantee you get. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and utterly. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned. By telling them this:
Consider the lilies of the field.

Look at the fuzz on a baby's ear.

Read in the backyard with the sun on your face.

Learn to be happy.

And think of life as a terminal illness, because if you do, you will live it
with joy and passion, as it ought to be lived.

How To Get Your VA Career Off To A Flying Start

When you have a crime to investigate, and you have no suspects, where do you start? Obviously you begin by looking at the person or persons who have the most to gain by perpetrating the crime.

This is why we must consider: who had something to gain from the disasterous crimes of September 11th? Obviously not Osama Bin Laden, who would net no financial windfall from the destruction of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Although he has loudly applauded the "terrorist" acts of September 11th and even tacitly taken credit for them, there is no reason to believe that he is anything more than a bandwagon jumper. Being blamed for the destruction of the World Trade Center has done more for his image than any amount of militant Islamic rhetoric.

But if not Bin Laden, then who?

It so happens that on December 11th, "coincidentally" 2 months after the tragedy, Credit Suisse First Boston quietly agreed to pay out US$100 million in order to settle an 18 month old investigation into its handling of certain high-profile technology IPOs (Initial Public Offerings). One of the most controversial amongst these being the IPO of VA Linux Systems, Inc. (LNUX) .

VA Linux Systems, Inc., now known as VA Software, is widely derided as a poster child of the dot-com bust, though inexplicably still in business. At the time of the IPO, VA Linux (Software) shares opened trading at nearly 10 times their $30 offer price, closing the first day of trading at $239.25. This meteoric rise made many early investors rich, strangely on account of a company which purports to sell a hobbyist operating system which can be obtained for free on the Internet. "The VA Linux initial public offering is a prime example of market manipulation in an IPO by investment banks, their customers and the issuing firm," said Steven Schulman, a partner in the law firm Milberg Weiss Bershad Hynes & Lerach, which specializes in filing shareholder suits.

"Because certain favored customers of the investment banks agreed to buy shares in a new issue at inflated prices in the aftermarket (in return for getting an allocation of the shares at the initial offering price) the share prices to which the IPO eventually soared were actually driven by artificial market forces," continues Schulman.

But what does the VA Software (Linux) IPO have to do with the attacks on September 11th, and what has that to do with the Credit Suisse settlement? Well, considering that VA Linux (Software) got CSFB into trouble in the first place, it stands to reason that the VA Linux (Software) Board of Directors were complicit in the stock fraud from beginning to end. As the investigation progressed against CSFB, the unscrupulous VA Software/Linux executives, their pockets bulging with filthy lucre plundered from trusting, hard-working investors, must have realized that their days in the country club were numbered if the SEC discovered their wrongdoings.

The SEC, or Securities Exchange Commission, is a federal regulatory agency, and cannot be bribed. Therefore, with a possible stint in federal prison looming large, Larry Augustin and the rest of the crooks, including outspoken gun violence advocate Eric S. Raymond, decided to undertake more active means to halt the investigation.

The Plan

It so happened that all the evidence in the CSFB/VA Linux investigation was held at the SEC Northeast Regional Office in Manhattan. More specifically, 7 World Trade Center, Suite 1300. The board decided that a simple burglary or arson attempt would not be satisfactory to destroy the evidence; anything so simple had a significant chance of being botched, and regardless of success would leave too many witnesses or living accomplices.

It was then that Eric S. Raymond suggested something he had read in a book by Tom Clancy. Crashing two planes into the World Trade Center Plaza would guarantee the destruction of the SEC offices, killing the operatives and possibly a number of SEC investigators at the same time. The plan seemed flawless, and would cost little more than the price of a few plane tickets. In a secret session, the board voted unanimously in favour of Eric's suggestion, and began to put it into action.

VA Software/Linux, at the time of planning the attacks, had no shortage of H1-B visa workers, who they employed for the purpose of writing and improving hacking, encryption, and other terrorist tools for the Linux operating system. It had been decided that a hand-picked few of these foreign H1-B workers would be used as the "patsies" in the operation. A contest was held, and the most zealotous Linux advocates were chosen for this secret assignment, direct from the board of directors. They accepted their mission after being told that, if successful, it would guarantee the adoption of Linux in the desktop market.

Alan Cox was brought into the fold to provide some planning and logistics for the mission. It was he who determined that since there was no adequate flight simulator software for Linux, the patsies would need to train at a flight school in order to pull off the plan successfully. It was also his idea to hijack a third and fourth plane for the purpose of crashing them into Washington D.C., to express his extreme rage over the DMCA, or Digital Millenium Copyright Act. The board of directors agreed with this addition to the plan in the hopes that it would help divert attention from the purpose of the WTC attack.

The H1-B workers were given false identities by using Linux hacking tools. Once they had attended the necessary flight training, they stayed at the Massachusetts home of Richard M. Stallman for a brief "faith building" retreat. During this time spent at the house of Stallman, between the nauseating stench of patchouli, Stallman's incessant, pitiful recorder playing, and Stallman's droning seminars on the grammatical and syntactical accuracy of various statements by Microsoft representatives, the H1-B workers were effectively hypnotized to the point that they were ready to lay down their lives for Free Software. It was then that they departed for Boston's Logan International Airport to board the planes.

(The preceding inside information has been obtained from a credible source close to the VA Linux/Software Board of Directors. He/she is in hiding for obvious reasons in light of this damning evidence, but has presented hard, physical evidence of VA Software/Linux's complicity in the events of 9/11 to federal investigators.)

ummmm, no usually they are ahead of the other distro's, ie as soon as it comes out it's in the distro. Oh wait, you must have been using the sissy stable version of debian. get a clue and use woody. That being said it really doesn't matter where the hell they keep ssl/ssh and all that stuff. I use them on my machine all the time and I typed in apt-get install ssh so on and so forth to get them so what's the big deal. They want to restructure the layout internally, doesn't affect me a bit.

It's not like having extra security without knowing exactly what it does is a bad thing. The Crypto section doesn't just contain things like PGP, but important server utilities like SSH, SSL and other things. It's my opinion that SSH should be installed by default (in place of telnet) on every server as it is much more secure. The people you're talking about probably didn't understand exactly how telnet worked and they probably won't understand exactly how SSH works, but they'll still get the benefits of the extra security as will anyone who depends on the servers that they run.

The most important thing is to control who gets in. At the Olympics, you've got a lot of people, and a basic tenet of security is to keep control over who gets close to the venues -- and that includes trucks making deliveries and buses coming in and out of restricted areas.

And while security at the venues themselves is certainly critical, it's what goes on in the spaces between the venues, among the athletes and the visitors that's really important. Since 1972 security in Olympic village has been getting tighter -- and this year will be no exception.

I'm not too worried about the Olympics -- it seems they're doing everything they can to keep people safe. The bottom line for security is you have to assume some risk, and that's a very tough thing for people, including me, to do.

I was looking at globalization more than just having security. Say I moved to France. I could not take it with me, and the French version would be different than the United States version. Not to say that encryption isn't good, but maybe it should be looked at differently than to just add it in there.

The Debian team has been working on this for a long time. Hopefully it will make installations and upgrades quicker as the servers can now be on the same continent :-).

One thing that was interesting is that under section 740.13(e) of the US EAR, the software can be exported as long as the people that are exporting it file for export notification. Apparently one thing that they were worried about was whether or not the individual mirrors had to each file or if Debian could just file for the main archives and all the mirrors. According to their legal advice that should be okay. Let's just hope that they don't have any legal problems with it in the future.

This is true. FreeBSD has been distributing code this way for years and years and years, with servers all over the world. Having a large number of servers around the world does help with development and downloading. Good to see another free unix entering the modern world!

Well I am a junior math major at a not so pristegious university and I would say that I am in the same boat. I posted a topic similar to this on the alt.math newsgroup and I got about 50/50 = "go for it" / "Stick w/ computers and keep math as a hobby"

If I were you I would take a few more classes until I make a lifelong commitment. Math is one of those subjects where the upper division work differs greatly from most of what you see in ugrad/hs.If that hasn't scared you enough then try the AMS Job Search [ams.org] just to see what type of positions seem to be open in your state.

Also (although you seem quite gung ho about theoretical research) keep your mind open about other subjects for your graduate degree. Bioinformatics departments seem to want mathematicians at least here at UCLA [ucla.edu]. Not to mention if you read in last months issue of AMS's "Notices" (would link but unless you are behind a a school's firewall you can't view it) they have an article about the shortage of Phd's in Math Ed. (which is more cognitive science than math). So, I know where you are comming from. Pure Mathematics is quite a leap of faith but it's one that I am {smart|stupid} enough to take

Yes, but it's the US gummit doing the restricting. Nor is this issue specific to Debian: any distro which includes crypto-enabled software (mozilla, galeon, even mutt) is going to have the same issues. If you want to sell a modern, non-crippled Linux distro of any type from the US, you're either going to have to:

a) sell only to US citizens, or
b) do the paperwork.

Unless I am missing something, this won't have any real effect on end users. When I request a package to install it, I request it by name and have no idea what subdirectory it is kept in, apt keeps track of this information for me.

Very nearly true. The main end-user effect will be on the bandwidth-challenged, who will find ssh and SSL-enabled versions of mozilla, galeon, mutt, evolution, and ghod knows what else on their CDs in the future. These people will end up saving a lot of download time (and possibly money if they pay by the minute for being online).

The flip-side of this is that CD vendors in the US might be slightly more reluctant to jump through the hoops necessary to distribute Debian on CD. However, the same hoops are going to be required for any other distros that include non-crippled SSL-enabled apps and the like, so I don't imagine this is going to be a major problem.

It will have benefits for end users, though probably not highly visible ones.

Cryptographic software packaged for Debian is available (and has been for a long time already) through non-us.debian.org , but crypto-in-main will make further integration of crypto possible. A number of packages in main will get enhanced functionality once crypto is in main. E.g. CVS can start supporting Kerberos for authentication.

The functionality enhancements made possible by crypto-in-main are not limited to the direct benefits of crypto, as I can illustrate with the Gnumeric package. The Gnumeric spreadsheet can be built to be able to fetch data from databases using GDA, the GNU Data Access library. Currently the Debian package is not built with GDA support. The reason for this is that Debian's GDA packages are on non-US (because their source package requires the PostgreSQL development package; PostgreSQL is on non-US as it is built with SSL support). Once we have crypto-in-main, I can build Gnumeric packages that have GDA support (probably in a separate plugin package).

Nonsense, it'll make things easier. They don't have to burn non-US CDs, which makes images easier to find, and as long as they don't ship to the export-restricted countries (which is easier to filter via mail than download), then they're fine.

From the lawyer's response:

Simply posting cryptographic software on a server that may be accessible from an embargoed country does not constitute ``knowledge'' that the software has been exported there. Therefore, criminal liability would not apply to the act of posting. We recommend that you perform IP checking and deny downloads to known embargoed countries. This due diligence also would provide a defense to a claim of civil liability. If you find out that your software has been downloaded to a prohibited destination, then I recommend that you block future downloads to that specific site unless and until you obtain a license from BXA.

This is the second time I've seen this "recomendation" come out of a legal organization, in almost exactly the same wording no less. I've got to believe therefore that they are pulling it from some other source, such as an official regulation or other document.

Does anyone have such a list though? Can anyone provide a copy of it? Is it even technically possible to generate? In real time, or even close? I mean sure, it's technically trivial to implement this blocking, just a few iptables/ipchains commands, or some entries in the firewall's firmware... but I think getting that list to begin with is nearly impossible. How do you know where the other end of the phone line that is dialed into some modem bank on the other side of the net is?

In the last instance that I saw this (an external server at work) corporate legal was threatening to pull the plug if the admins didn't provide proof they were doing this. After much head scratching and searching the net my sugested response was that they would be happy to implement this just as soon as the legal department provided them with such a list.

I'm told they never heard back from legal on that topic.

Well, the Debian announcement says this:

BXA regulations require that you not knowingly export to embargoed countries, as a show of good faith you may wish to consider implementing a reverse IP lookup that identifies the computer requesting the download, and that blocks downloads of the cryptographic archive to countries embargoed by the United States: Cuba (.cu), Iran (.ir), Iraq (.iq), Libya (.ly), North Korea (.kp), Syria (.sy), Sudan (.sd) and Taliban Occupied Afghanistan.
I know it's not an IP list, but it would be fairly simple to impliment - just block those TLD's. I suppose it would slow your server down some, having to reverse resolve every IP that connects to it. As far as updating the list, that shouldn't be too hard - all you have to do is have your lawyer give you a call every time a country is added or removed from the list (how often does that happen?) and just add their ccTLD to the block list. Or, just did a quick Google search and you can get a list from the U.S. Department of State.

If I remember correctly, Netscape used to use this technic but it was the opposite where you could not download the software unless you were from an US IP address but it failed and I could never download Netscape with 128bit encryption even though I was in the US and using an university computer.

The list of contries is easy to get sure, but as you said: the reverse lookups (1) will kill your server and (2) will open you up to more DOS attacks . Just imagine a dns server that doesn't properly close connections, forcing them to time out, now imagine two or three of them configured into a delegation round robin... a few incoming requests and your machine grinds itself into dust trying to resolve the reverse IP... get enough of those and you'll tie up enough socket resources to choke the machine. Also a reverse DNS entry isn't a requirement, many networks don't provide them. Working from domain names just doesn't seem technically feasible... pulling netblocks from iana maybe more doable, but still isn't even close to 100% accurate.

I sleep better at night knowing that through the tireless diligence of webmasters all over the world, running millions of reverse IP lookups every day, there is probably not a single copy of ssh available in any of those countries. Kudos to all those who participate in this grand, impenetrable virtual fortress.

No reverse lookups needed. There are publicly available IP mappings databases. If the IP has been assigned to a banned country, then it IS in the list.

I suggest the debian maintainers should check at LEAST this site.

Yeah... and I'm outside the US, and used to use an open wingate (SOCKS proxy) I found in the US to download, giving them false identity information I got out of an online white pages.

It's all such a waste of time. There are loads of publically accessible webcaches/proxies in the rest of the world. Why even both trying to block those TLDs.

I think slashdot would not be very popular in the near future. THe whole OSDN network is dying and it is sad. Linux.com id dead. themes.org is super slow. Valinux is dead. Vasoftware stupid to think that they can have a business around sourceforge. slashdot would be next. It is sad though because these sites are really valuable linux sites. I worry about sourceforge every day, I know about the other alternative but they can't handle the number of projects sourceforge has. It would be a great loss if sourceforge start charging people for their service. I hope IBM, redhat and other companies that benefit from open source to provide a free alternative to sourceforge soon because I think that osdn isn't going to be here in the future.

It amazes me that the U.S. government has done as much as it can to try to outlaw privacy. To me, it seems that things are out of control in some parts of the U.S. government. The U.S. spends more on surveillance of everyone everywhere than any country ever has in the history of the world. Money is spent on being sneaky, rather than on making good relationships.

It is futile to try to avoid the export of software, particularly when having it is legal in other countries. Yet taxpayer money is spent on this. The U.S. government, in my opinion, should not try to control the entire world.

Yeah, we do spend a lot of money on spying. Then again the US is one of the few places on Earth where a lot of what our spies do is illegal on home territory. Unlike most citizens, we can sue our spies when we catch them doing something unethical on home turf..

I have to agree that export rules regarding encryption are idiotic. If "badguys" really want something, they'll get it and it won't download it from debian.com or whatever.

Chapter Two

I awakened early the next morning. "Hi Tiffy, is my lil baby all wetie?" she asked talking in baby talk. I smiled at her and said, "yes I wet." She smiled. "Aww lets get this yucky dipee off of you and get you changed into a nice dry one ok?" "Otay!" She picked me up and laid me on the floor and pulled down my pink rubber pants and then began to un pin my diaper and pull it down. Then she wiped me and powdered me and pulled out a disposable diaper and put it on me. "Why you putting that kind of diaper on me?" "Well silly, because you have to go to school and if you need to be changed, it will be easier to deal with disposables." Then I remembered that I had agreed to be a baby and that I was going to have to be in diapers all the time. At first I was scared but then I remembered how much I wanted this and I just drifted off into fantasy world. "Earth to Tiffany... Hello, Hello? Anyone there?" Tammy asked teasingly. She had already finished getting me dressed.

I went down the hall into the kitchen and sat at the table, and had my breakfast. Mommy checked to see if I was diapered before I left. She handed me my lunch and kissed me good bye as I walked out the door to go to the bus stop. As I stood where all the kids were, my friends Laura and Emily came up to me. "Hi Tiffany!" Laura said to me. I smiled and said hello to them both. We talked for a bit while waiting on the bus to arrive. As I was waling up the steps of the bus, Emily was right behind me. When we all sat down together in the same seat (with me in the middle) Emily leaned over and whispered to me, "Are you in a diaper because I could hear you crinkle and your butt looks puffy." I smiled at her and nodded my head. Laura looked at me like she knew what was going on as well. I told them that I was a baby now and that I was going to be in diapers all the time. They both thought it was cute and said they wouldn't tease me, and that they would defend me if anyone gave me a hard time about it.

The bus pulled into the school and we all got off. So far only my two best friends had known about my diapers. As we went to our class and took our seat I knew that my mom had called the nurse and told her that I needed to have my diapers changed at lunch time, or recess, depending on how wet I was or if I had to go number two. I handed the note to my teacher that my mommy had written. She read it and gave me a look. She said "If you need to get your diaper changed, just raise your hand and ask to go to the restroom. Then go to the nurse's office and get changed." I thought this plan would work out quite well, but still I was a bit nervous. She just smiled and told me to go to my desk.

By lunchtime, I had wet in the diaper allot and I could feel that it was soaked and squishy. It was a different feeling then my cloth diapers, but I liked it as well. I told Laura & Emily where I was going and they said they would save me a seat at lunch. I went to the nurse's office. "Hi Tiffany." Mrs. Peters said. "Hi Mrs. Peters.. Um.. uh... I... I need to be ... changed." "Oh ok sweetie, just come on over here and Ill lay you down on this table and well get you into a nice dry diaper ok." She motioned for me to come with her. I did as she said and once on the table she undid my pants and pulled them down and unfastened the tapes on my diaper and wiped my hiney and powdered me. I blushed a little bit. She just smiled at me and when we were done she patted my diapered bottom. She helped me pull my pants back up. "There you go sweetie." "Thank you." We both smiled at each other for a moment and then I left her office and went down the hall to lunch.

Once I got through the lunch line, I walked around looking for Laura & Emily. They were over in the left corner, and they were also sitting with Jessica. I sat down with them. They all said hello and all that. Then Jessica asked me a question. "How come you were so late coming to lunch?" I had to think fast, so I said, "Mm, oh I just had to stop at the bathroom on the way here, that's all." I said knowing that I was lying through my teeth. Laura & Emily looked at me but didn't say anything because they knew I didn't want everyone to know I was a baby in diapers now.

After lunch I went back to the classroom and we had only three more subjects that day. The afternoon dragged on. Finally the bell rang and we all got out of our seats and went to get on the bus to go home. As I was waiting in the long line of people to get on the bus, I felt like I had to go number two. I tried to hold it. As we were boarding I really felt like I was going to lose it. Once we set down, Laura asked, "What's wrong Tiffany?" "Um... I gotta go number two, and I don't think I'll make it all the way home." I whispered in her ear. She looked at me and then she said, "Oh I'm sorry, but hey don't worry your in diapers, Just go in your diaper, and let your mommy change you when you get home." Laura said. Emily asked, "What's going on, what are you two talking about?" I leaned over to her and whispered in her ear and she smiled and then said, "Yeah Tiff, just go in your diaper like a big baby." I blushed and said "Shhh! I don't want anyone to know." They both looked at me and smiled. "If you do a load in your diapers I Don't know how they wont know Tiffany." Emily said. "Just go poopy in the diaper, and don't worry about it. They will all find out anyway you just can't hide this forever." Laura said. "Yeah Tiffany, it's ok we love you. We won't make fun of you. So just let go and be a baby and do your thang girl." Emily said with a smile. I sighed and then leaned back and began to push a major load of poo into the seat of my diaper. Both Emily and Laura were smiling at me. Emily kept reassuring me that it would be ok. Laura just watched and held my hand as I just continued to fill the diaper. "Um, I think I'm done." I sniffled and began to cry softly. "Oh Tiffy, its ok baby. You wanna lay down so you don't have to sit in your yucky diaper?" I said yes and they moved so that I could lay my head in Laura's lap and my back was on the seat and my poopy loaded diaper butt was in Emily's lap. My feet hung over into the isle.

After a moment or so, some other kids were staring at me. One boy turned around and yelled out "Eww! I think Tiffany pooped her pants! YUCKY!!!" Then everyone started laughing at me. I closed my eyes and Laura ran her hands through my hair and calmly said it would be ok. Also Emily was putting her hand on the bottom of my diaper and feeling how loaded it was when she said, "Oh my gosh Laura, her diaper is like way full of crap. Like I hope she doesn't have a leak." "Yeah but she'll be ok laying down because it won't get all mushy and ooze out of her diapers." Laura knew what she was talking about because she had a baby brother at home and she knew about messy diapers.

When the bus pulled up to our stop they helped me up and walked me down the isle of the bus. All the kids were laughing and they knew I was in diapers by this point because they could hear me crinkle and see my bottom was all puffy. I began to cry. Emily & Laura comforted me on the way home. Jessica, who normally would get off on our stop, didn't take the bus that day because her mother picked her up early from school. So once I got to my house they left me and I walked into the house. "Mommy!" I cried. "Yes baby?" "My diaper... " I couldn't even finish my sentence. "Oh come here... My goodness honey looks like you got a loaded diaper." "Yes mommy and kids were laughing at me on the bus too." I sniffled. "oh honey its ok, they are just jealous because they aren't cute little babies in diapers like you are." My mother took me to my room and I was SHOCKED to see that I had a crib, and a changing table now! "WOW MOMMY!" I exclaimed. "Yes baby you deserve the best." She laid me on my new changing table. She pulled off my pants, and unfastened the diaper. She use many wipes on my little hiney. Finally she powdered me and put me into a cloth diaper and pinned it on and put my rubber pants on over it. She put me in a cute little skirt and then helped me down. "Ok little baby, there you go." I smiled at her and thanked her. "You're welcome sweetie." She smiled at me. Then she set me down in the living room in front of the TV to watch cartoons.

When Tammy and daddy came home later that night I was happy to see them and Tammy asked me all about my day. At dinner I had another surprise waiting for me. When I was finished helping mommy set the table she pulled out a highchair that was big enough for me. "WOW MOMMY! A high chair! YAY!" I exclaimed. This was beginning to get better than I had ever imagined. My sister lifted me up and put me in. She sat next to me and helped to feed me. I was lucky to have Tammy for a sister because she was so sweet and accepting of me.

Later that night I got a phone call from Laura and we talked for a while and then mom came in and said I needed to get my bath and go to bed. So I hung up and as I walked to the bathroom, mom was there drawing water for my bath. "Honey, since you're a baby now, mommy or Tammy, or daddy will have to bathe you ok." I smiled and said, "otay mommy!" I hopped in the tub and was playing with my toys and mommy was giving me my bath. Finally she got me out and dried me off. She took me to my room and put me on the changing table and put a nice thick cloth diaper on me. "This should keep my little baby dry all night long." She tucked me in and read me a story, and then Tammy came in and gave me a kiss goodnight too. Daddy was busy working on something for work so by the time he came into my room I was asleep. I woke up an hour later though and noticed my diaper was wet, and I had to go some more, so I wet it. Then I lay there and daydreamed about being a baby. What was so awesome was that now that dream had come true!

after reading the legalese, the only thing i'm curious about is why there are different standards for crypto that has examinable source and crypto that is only available in executable form. isn't it already known that pgp, rsa, , etc are strong whether or not the source and algorithms are published?

OpenBSD is developed by volunteers. The project funds development and releases by selling CDs and T-shirts, as well as receiving donations. Organizations and individuals donate and thus ensure that OpenBSD will continue to exist, and will remain free for everyone to use and reuse as they see fit.

It seems that OpenSSH is still being integrated into the main archive of Debian, Woody (aka 3.0) is still awaiting release, and there is no specific holistic proactive security project. Nevertheless, portability, correctness et al. are definitely emphasized. Now the binary emulation may seem a dubious feature in many cases, especially with Linux occasionally recieving more support than many commercial Unices, though there are some efforts at binary emulation on Suns.

Okay, I'll admit - this was a troll. OpenBSD is still very valuable and viable, and still the best choice for security minded situations. But as yet another bulwark of OpenBSD is breached by Debian, this topic will again merit reevaluation. I still feel that the distant future will find OpenBSD being outpaced by whatever system the Debian Project presents, be it still based on Linux, a more direct BSD derivative, or a more direct embodiment of the GNU System.

For the Debian end user, getting stuff like OpenSSH has been very easy, contrary to what some posters have said. There is little or no benefit for most end users in this change; and a huge increase in trouble and inconvenience for some end users, who happen to be citizens or residents of a country like Cuba that the Bush regime doesn't currently like.

US crypto regulations are not only a nuisance, they're also volatile. "Things are getting better", we hear. Bullshit. Things are changing unpredictably. Few people (and certainly no software developers) have any idea what US policy will be next year.

The only sensible policy is to keep the crypto archive in a country that has never had export regulations for crypto software (there are many).

I don't think this is a bad idea.

As you say, it is very easy to get non-US software, add a line in sources.list, and never think about it again. However, there are a lot of other applications where crypto isn't needed for the package to work.

For example, you can get 'lynx' from the main server. If you need https support, just fetch the 'lynx-ssl' package from the non-US server.

But what if the maintainer is from the USA? I suppose that would prohibit him from uploading such a package to the non-US server.

Compare the LDAP utilities. There is no cryptographic version of them in the Debian archive. Ben Collins couldn't upload them.

Of course, I do some magic with stunnel to get my passwords encrypted anyway, but it's not the best way to go.

And the LDAP packages are just an example. How many other packages out there would be built with the (optional) crypto support, if they could be uploaded in the US main archive?

And where would that be? It seems to me that EU is hoping to become what USA is now. Only recently it has been chosen that it must be illegal to crack the region-check on your DVD-player in the entire EU. In GB it'll even become illegal to import DVD's from USA!! The good news is that crypto is available everywhere. The bad news is it does not work the way it should.

As US residents who did not know how to program crypto know, crypto is available in outher countries. A few years ago, the easiest way to get secure shell was to get OpenBSD from Canada, or buy something expensive. Programers with access to crypto knowledge could make what they wanted.

One of the main goals of public key encryption thechnology was to aid people in countries likely to be on US blacklists. Giving those people the ability to communicate privatly is much worse for oppressive governments than any improvement in that government's software library. Governments can usually afford programers and have what they want where they want it.

Most countries have proved that crypto is a doubtful tool of subversion. Oppresive countries have made cryptography illegal (yes, I'm refering to past US laws and current UK laws). Those that use it only set themselves up for investigation. Indeed, we can be sure that owning a computer at all in some places will earn you a beating.

I'm happy to see the US going in the right direction for a change. I have and love Debian. One of the best things about it is secure shell. It's great to be able to use and administer my home machines from work or anywhere else in the world without worrying about someone breaking in. "ssh user@mahine -X" run on my lan makes all of my machies transparently usable at once through a single monitor and keyboard. Having this wonderful tool even easier to get is a great step forward. Hopefully the US will consider this one of the weapons to freely distribute from the "Arsenal of Democracy". Go get it!

This will have a huge effect in the long run, since crypto isn't just used for encryption. It's also used for authentication, and is critical in token-based authentication (e.g., smartcards). With tokens, you have strong authentication ("something you have" (token) and "something you know" (passphrase), lacking only "something you are" (e.g., fingerprint)).

This allows you to do some really nice things. You want temporary root access? Sure - put your card in the reader and type in your passphrase. Once you remove the card, root access goes away.

Or you need access to a database containing confidential information? Put in the your card and you gain access to database... but it will be dropped when you remove your card.

I think you're missing Mr. Coward's point. Crypto was already available to Debian users. To most, this change will be all-but-transparent, due to the magic of apt-get.

ISSUE 1

With the announcement of Slashdot subscriptions, the question becomes "what is the most fucking effective way to fuck Slashdot out of as much fucking money as fucking possible?"

Nested mode.

Nested mode draws a monumental amount of bandwidth compared to Threaded mode, with fewer page views (for subscribers) or banner ads (for non-subscribers)

Let's say that the first page of comments on a heavily-discussed story in threaded mode is 100KB in size. A person reading that story will read some of the sub-level replies to those comments comments, but not all, so let's say he pulls perhaps 200KB of bandwidth maximum, and it will cost him many page views/banner ads. Now, someone viewing that same page in nested mode is entirely likely to pull 500-1000KB, with only a single page view or banner ad. More cost to Slashdot, less income to Slashdot, therefore less PROFIT for Slashdot.

This goes without saying, but we also need to set our thresholds to -1 (yours IS already set to -1, right?), set our "max comment size" to very high (so that gigantic garbage comments display in full), as well as setting "Limit" very high aslo. Crapflooders need to focus more on posting replies to high-rated or early-posted comments instead of (or in addition to) posting top-level comments, because many people don't bother visiting the second page of comments when there's more than one. And we all need to use Junkbuster, of course.

Let's summarize:

Threaded mode: Less bandwidth (small cost for Slashdot) More page views/ads (large income for Slashdot) small cost + large income = PROFIT Nested mode: More bandwidth (large cost for Slashdot) Less page views/ads (small income for Slashdot) large cost + small income = FUCKED

Now, the question becomes, can we cost them more money by subscribing, or by not subscribing? I'd be more than happy to throw $50 at Slashdot if by creative page-loading I could cause it to cost them $100 -- I'd be out $50, but so would they, so I think it'd be worth it. It would definitely do more for the world than throwing $50 at those gay starving African children in Africa. But can we cost them more money by subscribing or by not subscribing?

Most large-scale bandwidth providers charge a few dollars or so per gigabyte. Let's be generous, and say that Slashdot pays $5 per gigabyte. With subscriptions, you pay $5 for 1000 pageviews. Unless your 1000 pageviews average 1.024MB each, Slashdot isn't meeting expenses, they're making a profit. Subscribers will not only be paying their own way, they'll be subsidizing non-subscribers. Slashdot is lying to subscribers, and it's important that potential subscribers know this.

So basically, if you subscribe to Slashdot it's harder to fuck them than if you don't subscribe. So don't subscribe. And encourage your friends not to subscribe

Although this particular message is aimed at trolls / crapflooders / culture jammers / anarchists / discordianists / etc, it's important that we recruit the "normal users" to this crusade without them even knowing what our true purpose is -- just educate them that they'll get better value for their money if they use nested mode (much fewer pageviews than threaded mode, thus their subscription lasts longer), without pointing out to them that this'll also spike Slashdot's bandwidth usage.

In short, encourage subscribes to use NESTED MODE and to lower their thresholds to cut down on the pageviews they spend (actually to increase Slashdot's bandwidth usage)

Once subscribers realize that they can cut their page views down to a fraction by always using only nested mode, Slashdot's bandwidth usage will start to rise and they'll be forced to use larger and more intrusive advertisements to generate more income or make the site even crappier to drive people away to reduce expenses, or both. More intrusive ads will lead to more people joinining the FuckSlashdotNow campaign, or to quit Slashdot, or to merely Junkbuster the ads, fucking Slashdot's income stream further.

Summary:

Trolls / crapflooders / culture jammers / etc / should do this:

1. Junkbuster 2. Use Nested mode, -1 threshold 3. Set max comment size very high. 4. Not subscribe 5. Load as many pages as possible 6. Consume as much bandwidth as possible 7 Load as few advertisements as possible 8. Recruit others to the cause 9. Re-post this message to every thread 10. Rate this comment up whenever you see it posted 11. Stay tuned for more updates. We should (covertly) encourage non-subscribing normal users to do the following: 1. Not subscribe, because it's not a good value for their money. 2. Use Junkbuster to block banner ads. We should (covertly) encourage subscribing normal users to do the following: 1. Use Nested mode for the duration of their subscription, so that they'll spend fewer pageviews and get better value for their money. 2. Not resubscribe.

Flamebait perhaps, but not Off Topic. Integrated crypto is a significant feature of OpenBSD. Now Debian has the capability to integrate their crypto. This will propel Debian forward significantly into areas where OpenBSD was once undisputedly the better choice. Perhaps instead of ignorantly moderating, you could have actually posted a response. Of course, that assumes that you are capable of intelligent communication. My bad.
