  1. Howard Stern on L0pht And The FBI · · Score: 1

sounds like a howard stern segment to me, bunch of people babbling about someone else who messed with someone and now a bunch of people are pissed. And none of it matters to the rest of the world...

  2. different types on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

Really there are many different types of electronic music within the genere, much like rock music might have soft rock, hard rock, classic rock etc.

You need to find what you like, I prefer trance to anything else, so I really enjoy Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk and a few others. If you said you wern't as into Oakenfold maybe you should try a different style. I also like house which is more techno with real instruments kinda thing. So it's real drums maybe a few instruments. I've got a bunch of random stuff like ATB and a few others that fit that. Or maybe you're looking for just techno, things like Alice Deejay (better off alone) kinda the popular songs that you'd hear at a run of the mill dance club in the US.

  3. Re:Greatest band of all time? Time for a new poll? on The Who's John Entwistle Dead · · Score: 1

tragically hip and pearl jam, two of my favorite bands...rock on. Saw PJ in 1996 8th row, amazing show, then i saw the Hip about 2 years ago, i have never seen a band with so much energy on stage.

yeah but what about if someone disables this in europe and makes a site, they can't be prosecuted under the DCMA unless they're in the US. So everyone else is able to access this site, and then mod their MB and voila...

  5. flash virus on Will Microsoft Code-Checking Plans Cripple the GPL? · · Score: 1

My question is what happens when someone invents a virus that spreads through outlook express (imagine that) and just flashes the bios. If the ditial ID changes on the computer suddently the computer will be unusable because ms has to many checks to make sure it's not unlisenced hardware. At that point will consumers start to have a problems with it? If a whole company can't use their computers cause everyone opened an email called "natalie portman naked" will people still be jumping on the MS bandwagon?

  6. sounds like a free ticket on Legalizing Attacks on P2P Networks · · Score: 1

after reading the article it appears as if legislation like this could have way to many ends not tied and leave a free ticket to anyone to hack. Who's to say that my garage band's copyrighted work isn't being pirated, we'd betterd DoS them to make sure. It's a script kiddies dream....havn't any of these senators tried to use this programs. I'm not sure how much 'pirating' is going on when you can only download half a song on Kazaa at .6k a second..

  7. Re:Is Broadcast TV Outdated? on Wireless Network or Weird Al? · · Score: 1

even though cable tv is everywhere not everyone has it. I live in suburbia, where everyone and their brother has cable, yet my family has never had it, not cause we're poor, we just don't watch enough tv to justify the cost. But we3 still do enjoy watching some things like sporting events or the olympics or the occasional news.

  8. Re:What about organ doner recipients? on Northwest Airlines Wants Eye-Scan Check-in · · Score: 1

this is actually wrong. My roomate takes out people eyes for a living, if a person is a eye donor he is able to 'harvest' they eye and reuse it in research or transplant. I'm not sure what part exactly of the eye they transplant, but he has explained it to me a few times. If someone has horrible vision and certain diseases with a transplant they are able to increase their vision a lot.

  11. any reason for slow releases on NetBSD 1.6 Has Been Branched · · Score: 1

I follow BSD pretty regularly, and it seems like FreeBSD and OpenBSD churn out new releases every 6 months or so give or take, but from what i know of NetBSD it's been a while since they had a release. Does anyone know the reason for this, is it maybe due to less developers or integrating more things into the release. I remember reading on here a bit ago about zero buffering in the ethernet is it that stuff that's causing the hold up?

  14. Newsgroup Questions on VMware and Games? · · Score: 1

  15. Re:There might be an easier way on Disconnecting · · Score: 1

I have done this with quite a few CSR's and let me tell you they hang up so quick it's amazing. I've also done this with telemarketers, works like a charm. Little bad music, leave the phone laying on the desk and voila....free phone line.

  16. using cash instead on Fun with Fingerprint Readers · · Score: 1

The article states the cashier -- after learning automatically from the computer that the check owner was enrolled in SecureTouch -- would become suspicious that the thief had not opted to use the quicker fingerprinting method of check cashing.

sounds like disaster to me, once you're in the system the cashier gets suspicious once you don't use the finger print method. What if you don't want it out of your checking account but want to buy your milk with the 5 bucks your buddy owed you....

  17. big brother on TV People Meter: Monitoring What You Watch · · Score: 2, Interesting

Telescreens a la 1984?? Stuff like this freaks me out, there is no need for the TV to be a two way device, it was meant to be one way, the signal goes out, no need to get info back, trying to build functionality into a system like this is playing with fire.

  21. web viability on Perlbox: A Unix Desktop Written in Perl · · Score: 0, Interesting

Because this is a perl script I wonder how easy it would be to modify this to work over the web. Somehow put it in a cgi folder and then remotly access your desktop from anywhere. Because the perl will run the same speed no matter where it is the only limiting factor in such a thing would be the connection speed. If someone was running this over a private home network 100Mbps or so I'd imagine that it would be a very usable speed. I don't know the actual ratio between the speed of the connection and the perl speed, but it is very feasable that this could work over a cable connection also. Maybe an alternative to X?

  22. supporting the bands on The Music Business and the Internet · · Score: 3, Interesting

While I support buying records of bands I like I know full well that they don't get much of the money I pay. Therefore if I like a band a lot I'll go see them in concert and buy their cds there. They get much more of the money from cd sales at concerts, plus they get your ticket money and support. This works out for the betterment of everyone except the record companies, but who cares about them anyways.

  23. pay for email on African ISPs Being Fleeced by the West · · Score: 1

if i'm correct no one gets email for free, they get it included in their internet hook-up cost. I pay my ISP to send email, and then they in turn pay their uplink, where email is included in that cost. To my knowledge the only time you're getting "free" email is when you use something like hotmail, but even then it's not totally free, it's supported by adds.
