I Wanna Watch Cartoons!

aztektum writes "Since Saturday's tend to be slow days and it is Saturday morning I thought I'd send along Cartoon Network news. Ain't It Cool has a breakdown of Cartoon Networks 2002 itinerary." Several of the shows have been mentioned here before (Pilot Candidate and Gundam 0083 are both enjoyable so far. As is YuYu). Mentions the arrival of new DBZ in september. Also lots of non anime bits including Justice League (Many new episodes!). Also new Harvey Birdman, Brak, and Sealab 2021 although Space Ghost seems absent from the roster. Anyway, there are a lot of other shows mentioned too, but those are the shows that I have commanded tivo to snag ;)

Here's something to try if you're bored. Cartoon Network is the only channel on my DirecTV lineup (besides the PPV movies) which I can get in Spanish. You go to the menu and change the Audio Language settings.

Not all the shows come in Spanish, but a bunch do. It's a good way to learn. I actually prefer Dexter's voice in Spanish than in English. Johnny Bravo, Scooby Doo, and lots of the old Warner Bros. cartoons work too.

I guess you get used to what you hear first. I heard Dexter in Spanish first, and the voice seems to fit better. It's got a sharp edge to it that I prefer over his weird English accent. I really have no idea what other voices Ms. Cavanaugh does.

On the other hand, Fred and Barney (Pedro y Pablo) sound weird, as do Shaggy and Scooby, in Spanish.

First of all, they're definitely putting a lot into one channel at once. They're going to be cutting a lot of ratings-grabbers. And with all this stuff, I have a nagging feeling in the back of my head that the show that has fed me my energy for the past year or two will be gone...

    SCOOBY-DOO.

I know I sound like an idiot, since it's such a big hit, but it's one of the last old-school programs left on CN. Looney Tunes is the only other big old-school cartoon on there, but it's dwindling in how much airtime it gets. Scooby is too, especially since they gave some Scooby time to WB (which sucks, because they cram so many commercials in).

Scooby-Doo is likely to be the last holdout with Looney Tunes, finally being abolished back to Boomerang. However, very few people get Boomerang. To solve this solution, I still think CN should separate into three different entities and make them all as availible as CN - in fact, they should all be availible as a package for the same price, or just slightly more. Here are my ideas for the separation, found under the last CN story a few days ago...

Maybe I'm paranoid over Scooby's possibly leaving, but if you've noticed all the CN changes over the past year or two, you should be afraid too...

Actually, I think A Pup Named Scooby Doo is perhaps the only cartoon featuring younger versions of well-known characters that can actually stand on it's own merits. Let's face it, the original Scooby Doo can only be enjoyed for it's mind-blowing mediocrity. Think about all of the times you've heard something like this: "Jinkies! This piece of paper has the answer to the whole mystery on it, but I won't say what's on it until the unmasking because the show's writers want to salvage the last scrap of suspense but they can't think of a clue that has even the slightest bit of subtlety." Well, not exactly like that, but you get the point. There were also the horribly inadequate explanations as to how the ghosts performed their ghostly deeds. For example, in the case of the Snow Ghost, they said that the Snow Ghost looked like it was flying by using transparent skis. This doesn't even make sense given that the ghost was always flying head first and never touched the ground.

A Pup Named Scooby Doo was really a parody of the old show. All of the old devices are exaggerated and they reformulated the previously bland Fred and Daphne as an idiot and a bitch, respectively.

Even if you don't agree with me you have to admit that it could have been a thousand times worse. Look at Tom and Jerry Kids. Blecch!

I can get all the cartoons I want by p2p. In the case of "the Simpsons", I can see a new episode sooner if I turn on the boob tube (well, my tuner card, anyway) but I already see most of these toons (the ones I actually want to watch) subtitled by fans long before cartoon network gets around to rebroadcasting them sans anything raunchy and with lousy voice talent.

It isn't even that much trouble - taken as a total, turning on whatever software and running it overnight is less time than I would spend watching commercials if I watched them on TV. Why would I ever?

Seriously; what value added does Cartoon Network provide?

I think that US anime is a coal-mine-canary for the whole audio-visual-content industry; which is an appreciable slice of the boysenberry pie which is world economic output. That which is a minor annoyance for dedicated geeks to do today will be routine for any consumer no more than ten years hence. So - are video pirates like me (Yar!) going to appreciably sour the audience for Cartoon Network's anime? Or, is it nothing but good fan recruitment for anime generally?

Hard numbers would sure be nice, if some blessed sould has them - searches on google spit back mostly links to slashdot :)

Yes, you can get anime on P2P but in my experience noone ever has enough slots or bandwith. It takes me about 3 hours to find one poor quality anime when I'm looking for a specific episode. Which is why I Don't bother with p2p except when I'm depsperate.
CN I don't have to put any effort into watching it, if you buy anime, download it, or rent it it takes a higher cost in energy than switching on the TV.
There aren't any hard numbers, but every anime fan I've ever met either had started liking the stuff young from TV or else picked up the habit from a roommate or Signifigant Other. So without seeding the next generation there won't be anyone to convice roommates or SOs into watching anime.
Since CN has been doing the best editing of any production company translating into english for TV they're doing a big service. Unfortunately they aren't going to keep on editing shows in-house from the last article about CN I read. A real shame if they end up cutting more scenes because the producer doesn't want to paint bikini's on the characters etc.

What if you saw an episode of the new Transformers where it is done in an anime style and it is the biggest pile of CRAP you have ever laid eyes on?
