RealNames Closing Shop

The_THOMAS writes: "The company RealNames, which tried to make a buck off of the domain name gold rush by adding their own layer on top of the ICANN system, is going out of business (Full story here). To review, the RealNames system is a browser plugin which redirects a user who types 'cookies' in the IE address bar to Nabisco.com. The reason for the closure appears to be the decision by M$ to NOT renew their agreement with RealNames which expires in June."

    As noted on the Smithsonian Institution's site, the first official American flag had thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, each representing one of the thirteen original states.

    The flag icon for Slashdot's 'United States' section is missing its first stripe - the stripe that represents Delaware, the first state admitted to the Union. While a simple oversight could be forgiven, it should be known from here on out that Slashdot is in fact aware of the missing stripe, and even worse, refuses to do anything about it!

    This vulgar flag desecration and rabid anti-Delawarism must be put to a stop. Let the Slashdot crew know that we will not accept a knowingly mutilated flag or the insinuation that Delawarians deserve to be cut out of the union. I ask you, what has Delaware done to deserve this insolence, this wanton disregard, this bigotry?

    This intentional disregard of a vital national symbol is unpatriotic. Why, the flippant remarks CmdrTaco made about our flag border on terrorism! I urge you to join the protest in each 'United States' story. Sacrifice your karma for your country by pointing out this injustice. Let's all work together to get our flag back. Can you give your country any less?

    I just got a scam letter from Verisign that said my domain was about to expire this month and that I should send them my credit card number to make everything ok.

    Funny thing is, I registered with Tucows, not Verisign. And, my domain doesn't expire until 2003. At the back of this "DOMAIN EXPIRATION NOTICE", there was a block of tiny little print that gave the scam away.

    I'd expect this kind of crap from some fly-by night scumbag operation that operated from some hole in the wall. But Verisign? How in the hell did these dirtbags get the keys to the domain name system?

    Unless i get a job real soon here i'm going to have to kill something. I'm just squatting, listening to the new eminem, thanks rns, and damnit, I need to fucking get out of here. The family's been ok to come back to, but I'd still rather just.. go.. back.. I'd even be ok with taking classes, just for something to be doing.

    Hopefully things will work out with a job I'm looking at now, which should keep me occupied the rest of the summer. I guess i'm just feeling a lot of angst at everything at the moment. It feels too much like the high school life I left behind when I left for college. It's boring, and there really aren't that many people that I'm dying to hang out with. I should find someone to hookup with over the summer, that'd keep me occupied.

    Whatever.

    This recipe is based on Nicole Faust Hunt's Absolute Best Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, found by Googling and following the first link. Nicole says this is a secret family recipe. Not anymore!

    This recipe comes without guarantee, not even the implied guarantee that the cookies will be yummy. You're free to copy it and use it to make cookies, and you can modify it anyway it you want, but if somebody asks you for a recipe, you have to fork it over.

    Ingredients:

    1 cup butter
    3/4 cup white sugar
    3/4 cup brown sugar
    2 eggs
    Mexican vanilla extract [probably a teaspoon]
    2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 cups chocolate chips

    Directions:

    1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
    2 In a large bowl, cream together the butter flavored shortening, brown sugar and white sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla .Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually stir into the creamed mixture. Finally, fold in the chocolate chips. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets.
    3 Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until light brown. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

    Note:

    Mexican vanilla extract can be found in Mexican grocery stores. If you can't find it, feel free to substitute regular vanilla extract.
