  1. Tell me what I'm missing... on Design Your Very Own Microprocessor · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Everyone's ranting and raving about 'The Osbournes'. American "Oh my God!! Waaaay cool" hype or a seriously good programme? Definately the latter. 'The Osbournes' hasn't been packaged and dispatched to the UK yet and I hope it never will be. If it does, I hope they show it when I'm asleep at 3am or something.

So, everyone's ranting and raving about it. What people are ranting and raving about is slightly ambiguous. Nevertheless, it's President Bush's favourite show. I'm not sure what that says about President Bush either. I think it says he's a dumb prick with a small throat (that can't swallow pretzels in the normal way).

Anyway, I don't like passing judgement on something without experiencing it for myself, so I downloaded it. For those of you who don't know, "The Osbournes" is another daft reality tv wankfest featuring Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath) and his family in their swank Beverley Hills home. Nothing escapes the gaze of the viewer; Ozzy might be an evil, dark, macabre character that likes loud guitars but families go through the same stuff the world over.

I go to Kazaa and pick episode one. I figure it's the best place to start being the first episode and everything. It was in excess of 30meg and for a dial-up user that's some serious bandwidth commitment. I ask myself over and over, 'Do I really want to devot my precious bandwidth to this file?' - My tired mind overrides my better judgement and I do it. A certain random Kazaa user is the 'straw that breaks the camel's back', so to speak, when he tells me, 'Man! This is my favourite show ever! download it.. omggh!!! fskin' get it!!!'. I begin the download then go to sleep (trying very hard, despite the monosyllabic groan of my computer).

I wake up and leap to my feet in anticipation of getting to see this great show. I mean, if Bush likes it, I'll surely like it! I switch the monitor on and recite 'Hail Mary' at least three times, hoping that there's been no cock-up (connection dying). Phew - It downloaded.

As you can imagine, it was a huge anti-climax. Exactly how much of an anti-climax is hard to articulate. Think of a treasured sexual organ being driven over by an SUV, or rolled upon by a morbidly obese woman and you'll understand.

This show is shit. It's CRAP! My God this show soooo blows, my friends. I mean, 'it blows' (suitably long pause), 'my friends'. This show doesn't blow my friends per se.

Ozzy Osbourne is a degenerative, inarticulate slob. Centuries of heavy metal and heavy drinking have rightfully had their toll on this man. I don't recall him constructing one parsable sentence throughout. His mind is totally wasted and he isn't the man he likes to make out he is on stage. Ozzy Osbourne doesn't live in a crypt and I for one am disappointed. His kids are privately educated and take precocious satisfaction in letting their parents know how smart they are. Ozzy can't even work out how to work satellite tv - what a moron.

On behalf of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and her Commonwealth, I implore that you, the United States of America, stop sending us your crap television. Well, okay, some of it can come in (like the Sopranos) but the rest stays out! OUT! O.U.T spells out!

    Anyway, I'm drunk. Bye Bye

  2. I find you guilty, guilty, guilty! on Mashed-Up Music · · Score: -1, Offtopic

It seems my little girl is gone. My girl kittie has flown the coop, never to be seen again, leaving me alone with her brother. While many people have been eager to find me guilty of her possible death, I feel guilty of negligence alone.

That and other updates. There's probably a poll too...

The general consensus re: the disappearance and/or death of Sappho the Cat is as follows:

While i did make sure to bring the boy (Lucan) in off the terrace before i went to bed, i did not check to make sure the girl was inside, as i had never let her outside. It is possible she sneaked passed me and got outside. After getting outside, she probably, and stupidly went out past the terrace onto the ledge, a place Lucan is smart enough (and too big, i might add) not to go himself. Chances are, sometime through the night, she must have fallen off and fell seventeen floors to her doom.

Now, there is a very minor possibility she survived said fall and is happily living elsewhere. Neither security, the neighbor or the janitor have seen her (or her carcass), so this is possible.

Now, that being said, here's a happy fuck you to all those who see fit to call me cat-murderer. At worse, I am guilty of negligence. I did not throw Sappho off the balcony nor did i willingly place her on it. It saddens me to lose her, but if someone's waiting for me to sit in a corner and cry, well...

    keep waiting.

In the five months i've been in that apartment they've been on the terrace a couple hundred times and have never shown any inkling of being stupid enough to jump/fall off.

That set aside, i'm sick as all hell. The last time i was as sick as i feel i'm going to be, i ended up with tubes shoved down my throat, so this is not a good sign. On a much better note, my gf's mom got the mother's day plant i sent her. She was very, very happy with it. It surprised me when she said it made her cry. She said her own family doesn't do that for her (the thoughtful gift giving thing). That saddened me a great deal. My own mother got her arrangement this morning and she was very pleased; my other mom should be getting hers tomorrow morning. That's one too many mothers for one guy to know.

It bothers me that i may be too sick to make my trip next Thursday to see the gf, but this shit happens. I'm alternating Ludens and Halls, taking them like a jonesing crack fiend. I'm really starting to look forward to spending a year in China next year. I could use a break from IT, and a break from a lot of other things as well.

Ok, back to hacking up my left lung.

Random updates on my climbing shoes (which I'm sure you find facinating), and a plea for advice on a good book on rock climbing techniques.

OK, so I've gone ahead and implemented my plan to stretch my climing shoes using shoe trees. This has worked perfectly. The toe box has stretched out just enough to relieve the pain in my toes. However, the "slingshot heel" (basically a huge-ass rubber band around the achilles tendon that holds your heel in the shoe) also has the side effect of cramming my toes down into the shoe. So the extra space only lasts as long as I keep my heel back. As soon as I step off the ground, my toes are all jammed up again. Feh.

So, I'm currently stretching out the "slingshot" portion, hoping to reduce it's inappropriately huge pulling power. I've also considered surgically modifying the band to make it thinner and reduce its power. But for now I'm trying for a non-violent solution.

I ran across a book this evening called Mountaineering : The Freedom of the Hills, which looks like a great reference for rock climbing and mountaineering. Anyone had any experience with it? I'm learning most of the practical stuff from fellow climbers, but I'm obsessive, and want to read up as much as I can.

I'm serious. This is not a troll.

I've been growing my hair out for the past year. It's always been relatively short and now it goes past my ears, halfway to my chin. The problem is I have bad dandruff. I have to shampoo every other to three days or the dandruff gets really bad. The dandruff shampoos all leave my hair dry, frizzy and unmanagable. I like the way it feels, looks and styles when I haven't washed it for about week. The hair is a little thicker and doesn't have the waves in it it normally does. I need a way for it to be like that with out the dandruff problem.

Please help, I'm a guy and have no idea what to do. Links to good websites about this and general advice would be nice.

    Cook Time: 1-1/2 hours

    • 2-1/2 to 3 lb. boneless veal breast
    • 2 tsp. olive oil
    • 1/3 c. Marsala wine

    Marinade and/or sauce:

    • Olive-Mushroom Filling:
    • 2 tsp. olive oil
    • 1 c. red bell pepper, diced
    • 1 c. mushrooms, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
    • 1/2 c. California ripe olives, drained, chopped (4-1/2 oz.)
    • 1 TBS. fresh rosemary, finely chopped or 1 tsp. dried rosemary leaves, crushed

    2. Unroll veal breast; trim fat. Spread filling over veal, leaving 3/4 inch border. Starting at short end, roll up jelly-roll fashion; tie with string.

    3. In same pan, heat 2 tsp. oil over medium heat until hot. Add veal; brown evenly. Pour off drippings. Add Marsala and water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low. Cover tightly and simmer 1-1/ 2 to 1-3/4 hours or until tender.

    4. Remove veal from pan. Skim fat from cooking liquid. Bring cooking liquid to a boil. Cook until reduced to 3/4 c., stirring occasionally. Remove string. Carve veal into slices. Makes 8 servings.

Hopefully things will work out with a job I'm looking at now, which should keep me occupied the rest of the summer. I guess i'm just feeling a lot of angst at everything at the moment. It feels too much like the high school life I left behind when I left for college. It's boring, and there really aren't that many people that I'm dying to hang out with. I should find someone to hookup with over the summer, that'd keep me occupied.

ok here is the question. I have wanted to Fly (fighters, commerical planes ect..) ever since I was a little kid.

And now i have to chance to go into the Navy and they say that I would have a very high chance of being able to go into flight school. Now i know many friends who have done this and the recruiters lied through their shiny teeth, however this guy sat down and showed me some proof that he ment what he said. I am still not sure if I want to do this, but it would be fun and exciting, getting paid to go all over the world and finishing up the last year of college while onboard the ship.

some people may say "why not wait unitl you graduate?" and I shall tell you. The age cut off to join the program I want is in nine months long before I would finish my classes. Not to mention my GF is totally against this, but it has always been a dream on mine. What do you all think i should do about this?

  9. Remote process kill under 2K/XP? on Historic Bucky Dome Needs Help · · Score: -1, Offtopic

One thing that I've always envied about Linux boxen, is the fact that even when a program locks up your console so tight that no keyboard input's getting through at all, you can always walk over to another computer, SSH in, and kill -9 the offending culprit. As far as I know it, Win2k/XP has no such built-in facility.

The Resource kits for professional and server editions of 2k seem to include some type of kill utility, but I'm not sure if I want to run a random service on my system where someone can just waltz in, and kill something important -- I didn't see any authentication info on those utilities.

On the other hand, I've recently discovered VanDyke's VShell service, which lets a 2K box run as an SSH, SCP, and IP forwarding service -- quite neat, actually. In this case, it's the SSH part that interests me most, since there's apparently the possiblity of accessing CMD.exe remotely. Now all I have to do is find the 2K analog of "kill", and I should be all set. And yes, there appears to be authentication a plenty, especially since this is a version of SSH...

Hmm, and come to think, that SCP (what's with the move to the 'SFTP' name anyhow?) server will be useful too! VanDyke seems to take security seriously, and updates often, and SCP's just a good concept in any case. Right now, I have no remote access to my box because exploits on Windows shares are infinite, and scare the shit out of me. As a result, I actually have the file & printer sharing protocol unbound at the TCP/IP level.

On the other hand, port 22 seems to be something that gets attacked pretty rarely (for what I think are obvious reasons), and VShell's not common enough to draw a whole lot of exploits again. As soon as I finish dithering with the user rights (I think the thing uses ACLs), I should be all set to have remote access to my own files again! Yay ...
