Newsflash: Mac Users Love Apple, Hate Microsoft

An anonymous reader writes "An article on wired.com talks about how Mac users helped Apple through the dark years of the 90s." It goes on to discuss how a psychologist was hired to figure out how to woo Mac users away from Apple, with some (to him) surprising results.

i had my .mac account for two years and i was very upset at the prospect of paying for it . . . .

if you are a first timer, or had a free account before they switched to a pay format, they offered it for 50 bucks.

then at the end they sweetened the deal by offering 100 4x6 prints from kodak for Free! those cost 50 bucks anyway.

in fact, they did that for all .mac users. they also give u alot of software for joining, Virex (well that's useless, we don't really have those, but. . .), the great Backup util that saved my bookmarks and some other stuff.

don't forget, u can make all the functionality of .mac on your own server if you want. its all open source.

all in all, it looked bad at the start, but they really did a good thing with it, worth it for the few bucks extra.

mind u, i was vehemently opposed at the beginning

Anyway, a redudant comment is still on topic, given the title of the news. :-)

It's usually not a "switch", but an addition. IIRC, Taco bought a Powerbook. I have several platforms that I use, ranging from BSD and Linux all the way to the dreaded XP. But more and more, I've moved to my new Powerbook (faster than Taco's, hah!) for just about everything I do at work or home except gaming.

And yes, I know it was foolish to brag about my Powerbook being faster. He can probably -afford- a new one, where I'm still gonna be in debt for a while on mine. :)

Sorry, kids, I *never* troll. In fact, my above post is comprised of 100% realworld examples.

I know what you mean (metamoderation). I guess I'm more lamenting the fact that the moderation schema, as it exists on slashdot, leads to Death By Disagreement and a general theme of dismissal than real conversation. You don't need to argue your point, you just -1 the person. Not a lot of neurons involved in that one.

How often do you see really good, long threads on Slashdot? Why not? Because as your message becomes more and more narrow and drawn out, it is much more likely to be modded down and much less likely to be modded up because of the decreased focus and the lack of people reading the thread that far down.

I don't really give a rat's ass about the karma hit. That isn't the point. The point is that Slashdot has a bright pool of readers and I think the moderation scheme squanders it.
