Build Your Own LCD Bus Schedule

MikeLRoy writes "An engineering student in Winnipeg, tired of missing his bus to school (and waiting in the cold) created an LCD bus stop. It displays the next bus times for several stops and routes, all from the heated comfort of his kitchen. And yes, there are pics and code on the site."

Agreed. I switched back to WIndows2k for my desktop. I needed to go to school and learn some web programming quickly. Spending several weekends customizing apache and installing all the right tools is unacceptable. I needed gcc 3.2 and perl 5.6x. Every distro has gcc 2.x and perl 5.6x or gcc 3.2x and perl 5.8. It fucking sucks and NO PERL 5.8 IS NOT SOURCE COMPATIBLE WITH PERL 5.6 CODE. I do not care what slashdotters, the perl mongers, or even what perl.com says. I tested programs for my course on a cd and over %70 would not run with perl 5.8 due to changes in scoping. Not to mention distros with apache 2.x don;'t support mod-perl (redhat cough cough).

With WIndows I just point and click and everything is setup and no dependencies to worry about. I can use the right versions of my software and not have to worry about conflicts or dependencies.

For a server thats a different story and FreeBSD is my first choice even though it takes awhile to configure everything. The port system is years ahead of rpm and even apt-get. FreeBSD also has it right in being cautious about integrating things like apache 2.x and perl 5.8 because they are new. However gcc 3.2x is including which is nice for c++ programming. Its too late however since my system with Windows is already setup. But no os is perfect and putting a nice desktop and installer does not make an os ready for the general consumer.

However thanks to opensource products like perl it doesn't matter which os is used to run the script. The script that uses the bus system is truly cross platform so it does not make sense to promote linux here since it runs on any platform that perl supports.

Well to answer your rude post.

The book I use teaches perl 5.6 scoping as well as 5.6 style threads. My instructor told me not to use it and yes %70 of the programs on the cd with my book would not even run or would run with serious bugs.

Since I use "How to program in Perl" by Dietel and Dietel which are both MIT professors, I doubt your argument to your rude comment holds much water.

That is unless you think you are more qualified and can code better then them.

If you need to change your code then its surely not source compatible. There are many other changes besides scoping rules that effect portability like the module that deals with threading. In other words Linux distro's should not be so quick to believe everything on the perl.com's website and ditch perl 5.6x. This will break hundreds if not thousands of apps.

As NASA temporarily grounds its shuttle fleet following the Columbia disaster, an unmanned spacecraft that has been exploring the solar system for 14 years is nearing the end of its mission - and still revealing the secrets of a planet hundreds of millions of miles from Earth.

It took the Galileo probe five years to reach Jupiter. It photographed asteroids, and the stormy red spot, and then turned its cameras on the giant planet's moons, each a world in its own right.

The photos and measurements sent back to Earth have provided tantalizing clues suggesting three of those moons - Callisto, Europa and Ganymede - have liquid oceans, an idea that has fueled the imagination of scientists who speculate the salty water could harbor extraterrestrial life.
