Megaman - Network Transmission Analyzed

psyco484 writes "A new Megaman title, Megaman Network Transmission, is being released in the US this month for Gamecube. Gamespy has further details on this cel-shaded side-scroller. Is there still room for side-scrollers, in this age of incredible 3D worlds with incredibly realistic world physics?" Actually, this 3D graphics/2D gameplay Arika-developed title is already out in Japan, and the ever-resourceful Toastyfrog has a helpful review of it - but is this where you want to see the Megaman series going?

Not if they seem to be as badly done as this one. But looking at the praise that 'Viewtiful Joe' seems to get from those that have seen it, I think that the genre is not dead yet. As everywhere else developers still need to innovate, but provided they do I don't need incredible realistic world physics. Let me run faster and jump higher than I can do in the even more realistic world I live in. Otherwise I wouldn't need to play games.

umm I thought SpiderMan could just leap over buildings, at least to some extent...

Sometimes realistic physics is misconstrued. There's a reason SpiderMan can jump high and crawl up walls, and with a little work it can be done within the constraints of realistic physics. It's the idea that your character should not be limited to what real-world people would be able to do. Maybe you're a superhero (or supervillain), maybe you're just more powerful for some other reason, but as long as there's an explanation, it won't usually pull you out of the game. When you throw a grenade and run uphill to get away from it before it explodes, you don't expect the grenade to gleefully roll uphill (ala Half-life/TFC). THAT will pull you out of the game (and blow you up to boot).

Fixed, elevated 3rd person! No more character-blocking-the-view, and no random camera angle twists at the wrong moments like in some other 3rd person games I could mention. Also, some pretty damn impressive 3D graphics considering they're Playstation games I'm eagerly awaiting a third game in the series, as the second was rather open ended. :) But that's a little offtopic.

Then again, I really have no idea of how long the game is, either. If it's like Max Payne then I'd expect player reviews the day it's released and critic reviews in the normal print cycle (or online on the normal update schedule).

The 'Previews', of course, just added to the advertising to hype the game to no end.

I'm really excited about Sam N Max 2 (the original adventure game was so great), and Mega Man 2 was one of my all time favorite games. My main point in this was that we're constantly seeing Doom 3 and Half Life 2 and Halo 2 screenshots, I'm glad there's enough un-realism to balance these out. I think both real and un-real games have significant potential left. Enter the Matrix can't possibly have realistic physics, it's about the Matrix and bending it's physics rules. They could've done a lot better on that game IMHO, the engine simply wasn't made for PC (I hear the XBox version is much better). Putting that aside, this game looks impressive even though I'm not the biggest fan of cel-shading. The Gamecube is a powerful system, it's pretty cool though that developers aren't feeling they need to push to use all the new features to make a fun game. I think the overall message to developers to send is to keep fun a priority and flashy 3D rendered models optional.

I bought the import version and tried to play it in my mod chipped Playstation and it didn't work because Sony had screwed it up to defeat the mod chip, so I couldn't play it (even though I could've had it if I were Japanese). Thus Sony gained my eternal, undying hatred and drove me stark, staring insane.
