Operation Iraqi Freedom - The Game

Thanks to the Dallas Business Journal for a brief article announcing the release of F/A 18: Operation Iraqi Freedom, an Atari-distributed PC flight combat game that's just about to ship, less than 4 months after the start of the real-life campaign. The game's official website has more information on the title, which allows you to "..jump through your television directly into.. the F/A-18 Hornet.. load up with precision guided munitions and bring the forces of freedom to bear on the Iraqi regime of terror." And yes, this upgrade of GraphSim's earlier popular F/A 18 Hornet flight sim really does exhort you to "Kick Some Ba'ath" on the features section of its site.

Sad, and disturbing. Sad because, once again, game companies are exploiting jingoism to sell games. Disturbing, because whatever popularity this game amasses may bleed over into the Bush Administration's efforts to hide the truth.

I wonder if the game will mention the civilian casualties caused by the bomb-dropping. On a much more serious and perhaps even scary note, I wonder if the game will have missions to "destroy the weapons of mass destruction" and then reward the player with feedback indicating that yes, indeed, weapons of mass destruction were destroyed. If so- *if*- then I am saddened to think that the game will further contribute to the misinformation that many Americans still suffer from.

What do you mean "if"? I don't know what world you're living in, but over here there has been a plethora of games based upon real wars, with a heavy does of nationalism on the side. And it's not a U.S.-only thing. In Japan, for instance, you can buy wargames that have you play the Japanese side of WWII, and let you actually win.

who hates whom? a nationalist will posses hatred towards members of a country which he has been told opposes or threatens his or her own country. for instance americans have an irrational dislike of the french because they won't support a military strike or an irrational disklike of the japanese as they threaten the american auto industry.

however this game is based on an event that is not 50 years gone rather it is currently going on. the game also has the potential for serving as a vehicle for delivering propaganda. thus this game is special in that it potentially has the ability to influence attitudes towards that which it should be simulating!

while that was a good point, let me go one step further. to help you understand what this game represents and how ugly unchecked nationalism can be, let me make an analogy. how would you feel if a palastinian game maker created a game called "operation palestinian freedom" that allowed players become suicide bombers which navigate israeli checkpoints, detonate their bombs, and receive points for the maximum damage caused? now for good measure let's take the wording from the real add, "load up with precision guided munitions and bring the forces of freedom to bear on the Iraqi regime of terror" and change it to this new game, "strap on hand-made explosives and bring the forces of liberation to bear on the Israeli regime of terror".

you see, i'm not talking about imaginary killing or hypothetical outcomes of simulated wars. i'm talking about a game which has the very real effect of reinforcing nationalism and possibly changing individual attitudes toward current events.

very well put, albeit with a few typos, though I can see how this game can be seen as propaganda. U.S. was dammed if they did and damned if they didn't on the whole Iraq thing. Either the U.S. let Saddam make a fool of it or ignore the rest of the world and take out Saddam. I am pleased because they took the "kicking-ass" solution because to tell you the truth, I'd rather those people be "free" than making France and the rest of the world happy. I put free in quotes because no one is really free, but they are more free then they used to be. They now have an opportunity to do something with their lives, whether or not they choose to is their problem. Just like in the U.S., you can be a bum or you can be a CEO, there is very little distinction between a bum and a CEO at child birth.

That said, I wish the U.S. would put the government in place and a governing board to overwatch the government/police/etc so they don't abuse any their powers for a little while. The longer the U.S. is there, the more U.S. casualties we will have and I'd rather not see that. I have a lot of respect for those in the armed forces and I know right now they are completely defenseless.

BTW I grew up under an oppressive regime (Romania), so I know that things will suck for a little while in Iraq until people get used to the thought of being "free". Trust me, living an okay life under an oppressive regime where anything you say might be considered as an act of treason and punishable by death, is much worse than living in a life where the only barrier to your happiness is yourself.

Thank you to the makers of this game, because it is the perfect parody of the US led-war on IRAQ.

What the hell is "the forces of freedom" ??
Basically shows how George and his staff have the US believing this is a Star-wars like world where the US "forces" are fighting the "dark side" or as he calls it "people who hate freedom". At least now the USS Condeleeza Rice can sail safely to get its shipment of cheap IRAQI oil, with production costs being about 1/4 that of US wells (TIME mag.)

Hey, maybe it will keep the NRA and disgruntled employees in the US something to practice on and feel patriotic all at the same time...

    Yeeee-haaaa.
