  1. Re:I wonder if... on Safari 3 Beta Updated, Security Problems Fixed · · Score: -1

The reality is that we're back to where we were a decade ago; two big browsers (IE and Firefox) and a bunch of relatively meaningless small players. I can't imagine any reason that anyone would want to actually use Safari. There's barely an excuse for it in OSX, and certainly none in any other environment.

Firefox ain't perfect, but it does the job fine for me, substantially better than Safari. maybe because safari has a lighter open source engine that exists on multiple platforms.

open that in notepad and add the line : (rememebr to include brackets, which i cant show in the post)

seriously this is why zealots should not review products. The author starts off by saying i'm a MS hater but is going to try to keep this objective. Then he proceeds to say since mythtv cant do HDTV and Media center can, he is going to hold off on HDTV. WTF that alone makes MythTV totally useless for a huge number of techies. That is a huge minus. Its like saying I am going to compare GUIs in windows and linux. However, since linux cant do color yet, we are just going to compare the monochrome GUI.

You already know what the outcome is given the featureset and yet you continue to review it. He doesnt even mention the complete lack of HDTV as a minus. Even with all that he picks vista at the end.

What is funny though, it that he compares myth tv to media center instead of beyondtv which is by far the best media center application on any platform. Its light, fast and natively supports DivX. It it also incredibly polished and in my own trials had competely blown away every other application (i eventually went out and bought it). Oh yeah, and it supports HDTV.

  16. A wake up call on FSF Releases Fourth and Final Draft of GPLv3 · · Score: 0, Troll

the GPL3 fiasco should serve as a wake up call to companies which are trying to shift to GPL software either for development or use. The fact is you can't make a business model based around the current GPL version because once you switch to GPL software you become the bitch of the FSF. What is to say the FSF will not add other restrictions on the software you use? It is entirely usage clause will be added that limits what you can do with GPL software. In addition when there is a licence change like this eveyone needs to get legal involvd again to make sure GPL software is still usable. The parts where GPL infects patent deals is really disturbing. As each day goes by it really does seem like MS might have a point about the GPL being a viral licence. In this case it has mutated to infect unrelated areas of business after entering the host.

This has got me seriously looking at BSD instead of GPL stuff. At least BSD will not change on you like this. We will probably shift to Macs at work. I see the release of GPL3 as the beginning of the end.

It's widely adopted, that's true. But, if someone wants to learn what computer science issues are addressed by an operating system, do they crack open some NT code? Nope. Unix was then and is now the most important operating system: it provides a standard and it may be adapted into places where only the insane would put NT or its descendants.

We do on occasion look at the NT code to see how MS did things (its not always wrong) on. You do know that some academic institutions are allowed to see the NT and CE code right? check your CS dept you probably have to sign NDA and stuff, but yeah, you can see the NT source.

NT4, win2000, XP, win2003 and vista are descendants of OS/2. The win 9x line is dead and all we have are the bastard sons of OS/2. I would say that win2000 and XP were pretty significant operating systems for good or for bad.

the war on terror is a very very small part of the conflict with islam. To understand it you need to look at what muslims have been doing in asia for the past few hundred years up until the present. Look at the islamic conquest of india and the assault on the existing cultures and more so nearly all of south east asia where. In places like malaysia and indonesia it is called arabization where the existing culture and religion is replaced by force. Is this like western colonization? yes? but does the west still do that? no. Muslims still do that.

For example in indonesia, there is an island called bali it is the one of the last places in the area where the people are still hindus. It has been bombed twice. This was before the war in iraq. There was a point where i used to defend islam by pointing out that indonesia was the largest muslim state and they were peaceful. I cant say that anymore.

the common thread among the populations that were ravaged is that they were mostly hindu and buddhist and tended to be pacifist or too trusting. I believe this is the error many in the west are making too. I am not aware of any culture that has been able to co-exist with islam on a long term scale without major conflict.
