Linux Beer Hike in Slovakia
palfreman writes "The Linux Beer Hike is less than a month away. This year it is in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, following last years success in County Clare, Ireland, and the 2001 event in Bouillon, Belgium. This year the dates are Saturday, August 9 to Sunday, August 17. There is also registration site and a members mailinglist. I'm driving from England, a 2400 mile round trip!"
Phew... when I first read that headline I thought someone had raised the price of beer in Slovania. Not that I'm ever going to go to Slovania, but with globalization and stuff I worry about these things.

Man, that's a heck of a long way to drive drunk. What is one to do to avoid sobriety?

But can anyone explain what this event is?

Try moving to Sweden and you will get used to driving long distances. Guess we have to with only 21,6 people per sq km. (England have 247,4)
As soon as I saw this article, I popped into the local liquor shop and got me a six-pack of...
BEER!
Now it all makes sense.

Linux beer hike? That's outrageous! Linux beer is supposed to always be free as in, er... Whatever! Isn't that what the GPL is about?
Should be called The Linux LAGER Hike in Slovakia - no Beer there!

To bad i couldn't find a joke to insert but ...
There's currently a true tick-plague going on in almost the whole of eastern europe. People you'd better get that vacination now since it takes about three weeks to kick in.
Pluspoint is the ticks concerned are not spreading the dreaded Lyme's Disease but merely Tickborne Encephalitis.

To mainland Europe? Do you have an amphibious assault vehicle? And if so, do you take it out often? And if so, are you on a quest for global domination? I just happen to be the greatest criminal mind of our time...

Gotta love that chunnel. BTW, when are we going to get one of those under the Atlantic?

There is a way. :)

One by one the penguins steal my sanity...
What this proves is: ...
1. People using Linux make more money, and save more money as well.
2. I've never heard of a Windows Beer Hike - guess after spending money for Windoze, there's nothing left.
3. Linux users are sensible - they really meet real people, and do real things - not NetMeetings, Virtual tours
I'm planning to start something similar where I live. More later..

I hope there lots of rest stops, Pilsener is fast acting compared to Irish Stout. Rather like using a dd to wipe a drive as compared to a linux mkfs.
dd can be more satisfying and assure that all the crap is gone like one good pint of Irish Stout, but a Linux format is real quick and dirty, just like 6 or 7 Pilseners.
OH THE SHAME I fell off the wagon and use sigs again!

I hate those offtopic posts
But this is not one.
Yes, everyone, I realize there are ways across the ocean. Chunnel, ferry, etc.
There's a chance you haven't seen this and therefore didn't get the reference. ;)
(If you haven't seen it and you watch it and get hooked on it and spend lots of time clicking all over the entire site to find all the funny bits, it isn't my fault .

It's amazing just how small Europe really is, when you get right down to it.
2400 miles would barely get me from Vancouver back to my parent's place in Toronto, let alone a round trip.

Sounds like what I do on a Monday when nobody else is around to drink with me. And I only have to drive 1.5 miles round trip to my favorite liquor store.

And why is the submitter of this story actually excited about the hike
Because the countryside is beautifull there.

Too bad. I'll be in Slovakia the following week. I wouldn't mind going on a turistiku through the hory with a little Linux and, of course, pivo!

unfortunately, i won't have the money to be able to make the trip and accomodations to go. i was hoping it would be closer to the czech border, but my girlfriend's parents live in moravia,cz, so maybe i can shack up with them for the week :o)

I'm driving from England, a 2400 mile round trip! :-)
I always get a smile on my face when Europeans talk about driving far on a vacation. Or when they come here to the states and think everything is so close together. The look on their faces can be pretty funny when you tell them its a fifteen hour drive to Florida or a drive out west will take them a couple days. 2400 miles was a little more than half the distance we drove on a trip to Montana last year. It was nice though when I stayed in England a few years back that you could get to just about anywhere in 4 hours or so from London. That and being able to take a train there was even cooler. I'd trade that for all the cheese curd signs we saw in Wisconsin.

Will I be required to wear socks with my sandals like the guy who took the pictures? When I think of what a geek is, I will, from now on, think of that picture.
I mean this in the nicest possible way of course.
Why, Hacker-Pschorr, of course.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
When I drove to California and back from my home in TN, it was almost a 4000 mile round-trip. Now, this guy is driving from England, to Slovakia and is going to pass through how many countries to get there? How many languages? How many cultures?
Nothing insightful, but I find that just amazing that crossing half of the US is really and truly an amazing trek. I couldn't imagine driving Key West, FL -> Seattle, WA (or, hey, Alaska for that matter). (btw, mapquest: 3530 miles). We live in a fucking huge country.
If you were me, you'd be good lookin'. - six string samurai
Spent two weeks this past June in Slovakia visiting relatives.
Some tips:
1) Pivo- beer, lager, pilsner is quite good and cheap (sorry not free). Prices varied from 10sk to 30sk a half liter (20 cents to 75 cents approx). I think Banska Bystrica may be the home of Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant)- a very popular and very good beer. And for those whose don't drink beer, go for the Kofola, a cola that is pretty darn good, IMHO.
2) I did not hike the trails in the low Tatras, but the trails in the high Tatras were great, but challenging. The trails we hicked did not have distances- they listed times between points. I am convinced they used a mountain goat to get those times. YMMV.
3) Was nice to not see a McDonalds or Starbucks in two weeks, though I have no idea why people pass off Nescafe as coffee. Was seriously missing my cup of Peet's. The food in the restaurants was quite good and quite cheap, by US standards.
Man, I'm driving to Burningman next month from Austin, Texas and it's 2200 miles one-way. You silly Europeans and your tiny countries. :)
32 hours one way in a truck with 2 women. Yes, it will be an interesting trip.
Any OS Developers/Followers that support the homeopathic use of good Beer/Ale are OK in my book. I don't see Redmond throwing very many Beer Bashes. I mean, which event would you rather attend? An event where the Beer flows like wine (huh?) and the atmosphere is in a fun loving pub or Brau Haus or an event at a far away Hotel/Convention Center with an overweight, scary and sweaty Steve Balmer marching around screaming incomprehensible buzz words about .NET.
Seems like an easy choice.
The thought of a drunken TUX the Penguin wandering around in hiking boots with a Beer Stein clutched in his flipper pinching all the women is scary though! Oh well after enough Beer anyone can see that happening.
I will be in Bratislava almost exactly 1 mth after this. I will hoist a few in honor of this event, even though I will not be able to attend.

Better book accomodation in advance. I wasnt there since 2 years now but it used to be a common problem there in Banska Bystrica.

Some of which is underwater right? Sounds fun!
Judge by your online c.v. that your last proper job was ended in March 2002 and you are going to waste money going Slovakia? I know Europe gasoline is not cheap
But still - gasoline in Slovakia is cheaper than in neighboring countries, and food & beer cost next to nothing here. I am right now on vacation in Slovakia. GPRS roaming works fine. I ate a generous dinner with loads of excellent beer and paid less than $10. If you're out of money, it's the right place for vacation!
free as in beer?
Now, though, one big problem is going to be the US Government's insistance on having fingerprints and DNA samples built into passports in order to enter the US without a visa (that costs $70) via the visa-waiver programme. Foreign visitors hate that kind of thing - being treated as a criminal, being fingerprinted, hair samples etc. While those kind of restrictions are in force there isn't going to a US Linux Beer Hike that will actually appeal to non-Americans. Its a shame really, becuase there are some great locations in the US. I was originally hoping to propose the Mount Washingotn area in New Hampshire, as its an area I know quite well. There is no chance of that with Biometric ID requirements for tourists though.
I've found another job now. My online CV is out of date, that's all.

how about a linux wine hike in the beautiful Napa Valley? (o.k. I live in Sonoma - close enough)
