Bullshit. The railroad would have been cost effective. If the Chinese can make a line from Beijing to Shanghai cost effective so could you. Heck, the line to Urumqui was built and it's literally from nowhere to nowhere and twice as long as Beijing to Shanghai. The problem was typical California. NIMBYism and inflated right of way land costs.
Not in California, where every construction project comes with multiple lawsuits and environmental policies will bankrupt you before the first shovel hits the ground.
Some of the mathematical sections are written at a graduate level. I wish they also provided a bit of help for those of us who are mathematically literate at a lower level
If you have a $2m house, can't you sell it, get at least 25% out (say half a mil), and buy a nice condo or small house somewhere like San Diego? If you own free and clear, your taxes should be $500/mo, HOA $300/mo (assuming condo) -- $800/mo and maybe $70/mo for electricity isn't bad for a retirement place.
$500/month in property taxes would only be realistic if you paid $50,000 for the house or condo, maximum (assuming no property special assessments). Those do not exist in San Diego.
"Look, that woman says a lot of things, yeah she's a real talker, but it comes down to a lonely old lady with something screwy upstairs sitting in front of a computer, with few friends, making enemies."
Dear God, someone get that woman a Slashdot account.
We have all replied with "LOL" to amusing posts at one time or another. However, this one literally made me laugh out loud. Bravo.

When I sent messages to the infected Hotmail users from my Gmail account, to see if the auto-responses would get through Gmail's spam filter, Gmail's blocked only half of the replies. When I mailed all the users again from my Hotmail account, the results were strange -- most of the users' accounts sent back no auto-reply at all, not even a reply that got routed to my junk folder. (Why would Hotmail accounts not send an auto-reply in response to a message from a Hotmail user? Please post if you have any idea what's going on there.)
It was probably your emails getting binned as spam.
I don't disagree that corruption is party-agnostic, but I take umbrage to terms like Republicrat or RINO that marginalise the centre right and left. They promote a "with us or against us" mentality that was famous with the United States' last president.
My question is this: What is the EPA _really_ trying to accomplish with this? Covering CO2 under the Clean Air Act would completely hamstring American businesses, forcing them to severely cut CO2 emissions.
Next thing you know, they're going to want us to stop breathing.
Just to be clear, there is no such thing as a "brake/steering" fluid system in your car. It's either brake fluid or steering fluid - these are two separate systems with separate reservoirs and separate fluids.
Some vehicles (including my Chevy Astro) use the power steering pump for the power assist brakes. Most vehicles use vacuum for power assist, but not all. I found this out the hard way when my power steering pump died. I couldn't brake or steer. Luckily, I was parked when it died. There is still a separate reservoir for brake fluid. I think the OP was confused about what fluid was being replenished.
You could have taken that $32,000, put it in the bank at 5%, and made $800 in six months. Instead, you made less than that and now you don't have the $32,000 any more.. He's not comparing opportunity costs.
What bank do you go to that is paying 5% right now?
Look at it this way: they saved you the trouble of "finding" all the problems in the plumbing, and you can replace all that copper with PEX.
2007 California Plumbing Code (CPC) (effective 1/1/08) allows the use of PEX for domestic water systems in the State of California on a case by Case basis only. (ref: 2007 CPC Table 6-4 Footnote 1; previously: 2001 CPC 604.1 #2).
While I agree it should be replaced it wouldn't be at no cost. 4 years ago I got tired of being late after the time switch so I bought a clock that got the time over the radio. Great right? Till two years ago when the idiots in Congress said lets change it by two weeks for no reason whatsoever. Then I had a clock that was wrong 4 times a year instead of two, because I forgot on the new date to change timezones and then it auto changed two weeks later. I had to buy a new clock after two years of that.
You just had a dumb clock. WWVB (the source of the time broadcast) has a DST bit in the signal. If your clock was calculating the DST dates on its own and getting it wrong then it was just poorly designed.
This is why my preferences are set to view low UID posters at higher point value than others. It is their keen insight from years in the tech arena that keeps me coming back.
I have a Nest Hello. If it gets stolen, Nest will replace it for free as long as I file a police report.

..maybe they could also roll back all rounded rectangles they added in v69. Everything is so round it feels like I designed it in my basement.
Yeah, it's starting to look like Slashdot.

Oh, and $200CDN.
That's only about $0.75USD, right?
However, someone using modern casing techniques (if I were a Twitter/Facebook/Foursquare user) would know that I'm working from home today.
I don't know what kind of job you have, but I can't think of any that involve commenting on /., so I wouldn't say that you're working from home.
Allahu Akbutter!
That was genius. It's very rare that I literally LOL.

The BBC video doesn't seem to work for me - I think this is the same.
Yeah, but the volume control on the BBC player goes up to 11.

You don't have 7 year old children, do you?
Yes, I do. My 7 year old daughter plays Rock Band on medium. She keeps up with her teen brothers just fine.

::::sniff:::: That was beautiful.
I think its ridiculous--but its how our society evolved.
No, that's how our society was intelligently designed. Get it right.

Actually, mfh bought his account on ebay. So yeah, pretty much.

I am going to go remove that preference now.
Don't bother... mfh bought his account on ebay.
