Atari 2600 RPG Gets Homestar Runner-ed

Thanks to several readers for pointing out that Paul Slocum's new, in-development Atari 2600 RPG, which we've mentioned previously on Slashdot, is now revealed to be using the official Homestar Runner license. According to the newly-released info, "Mike and Matt Chapman (creators of Homestar Runner) will be contributing story, graphics, and creative ideas to the game", and you will be able to "...play as Homestar, Poopsmith, or Strongsad" and, as before, "...fight enemies from other Atari 2600 games" when the game is released as an actual cartridge, early in 2004.

      Local swapmeets are also an okay source of 2600s. I've been collecting for a couple of years and I've probably got half a dozen spares that I had to get because the seller wouldn't sell just the games. If anyone in the Perth metro area is after a 2600, my homepage has my email address as an image (damn spam spiders), feel free to contact me.

    ...Oh wait, I never had one because Atari was overpriced rubbish and Nintendo beat the crap out of them with NES, the first home game console that actually succeeded in mass market! It's not just that they're devoting an entire article to the imminent development of an obscure game on a decades-dead console, but the fact that almost nobody in the US has a 2600 or would even care if they did have one! Anything that can be done on a decades-dead console can be done 10 times better on a PC; get with the program!

      There's a whole article on classicgaming.com about the rediculously successful gaming market before the NES. The NES didn't even compete with the 2600, it competed directly with the Sega Master System. Learn your history if you're going to make statements like that, you're years off the mark.

      Also, the Brothers Chaps are clearly classic gaming fans.

      Also again, why are you raining on their parade? If you don't have a 2600, you can't play the game anyway, so why bother us with your useless whining?

      I loved the NES I was playing in 1979. Oh, wait, there wasn't one. The only legitimate choice was a 2600, in Atari or Sears flavors.

      Yeah, 2600, biggest market flop of all time. Nobody had one. Not every other kid in my elementary school. Except for the handful of losers with Intellivision's.

      I doubt there's a modern PC that can accomplish as much in code as that dictated by the limits of a 2600. But as the mods have (for once) correctly marked the troll, I'll leave it at that.

      I think if anyone checks Tuxinatorium's Slashdot Page and looks at the stunning record he has in the last 24 posts or so, we see that it doesn't make much sense to argue with him.

      However, for what it's worth, Atari sold 20 million 2600s in the US across its lifetime and Nintendo sold about 30 million across its own. The Atari and Nintendo manufacturing lifetimes overlap by about 5 years.

      But it's OK, let him dance and say stupid things. That's why they make cancer and random traffic accidents..

    I'd like to play it, because most everything the Chapmans have done until now has been a scream, but I don't have a console, nor do I want to buy one. I've got no problems with buying a ROM file and trying an emu, and I think there are a lot of HR fans that are in the same boat. Here's hoping they just sell the ROM file from the cart alongside the cart itself.

      This is a great idea. Or, even better, release the ROM as a seperate (and cheaper) purchase.

      They could release the Cart first, for the collectors, then release the ROM download at a cheaper price, like a month later.

      That would be cool.

      Sure, a rom would be good, but it would take away from the retro gaming feel. They should find a stash of 2600's and release a limited edition with a red and white Homestar Atari!

    I always though H*R would make a good gaming license (either RPG or platform). I think they'd be doing themselves a favor to get a GBA game going with these crazy characters. Maybe Romero would do it? Either way, i like marshmallows.

    Crossing the current popularity of Homestar Runner with the retro-gaming craze on a dead but fairly ubiquitous console.

    And perhaps best of all, game mechanic-wise it appears to be based on the early Ultimas. As others have observed, the only potential problem is if they only release a hardware (cartridge) version. If they also distribute a ROM version that will work on emulators, they'll be wildly successful.

    Is if they released this not as a cartridge but as one of these! and as a ROM. That way, you get all the Homestar Runner goodness you crave, PLUS being able to play it on your TV at home.
