I still can't figure out the allure of Mac's. Are these boxes significantly faster than the latest Windows XP Pro, P4 or AMD box? I wonder where one could find a sort of speed vs. price blow by blow breakdown? I'm not talking a Windows Fan Boy vs. Mac Fan Boy flame fest - just one that is as unbiased as possible!

Once again, proof that "ooohhh, shiny!" is one of the primary motivations for Apple customers to part with their hard-earned money.

OK, I got my results by compairing their results to the results I get using icc on a Dual P4 3.2Ghz.

I only ran SPECfp_base2000 (because it was the only test I had around)

I got 16.1 (higher than the mac result at 15.7, from the paper)

Argueably I was unfair for using icc instead of gcc, but icc is so much better, why should I use an inferior compiler? If there is a better compiler for mac then I'd be happy to see the results.

I don't agree that using gcc on both platforms somehow makes things "fairer" as it will clearly have to optimise for the different processors differently, so why not use the best compiler you can?

I'm sorry, but my karma is already plenty healthy, so I have to come right out and be honest, even though I'm certained to be modded down as flamebait:

Apple as a platform isn't just dying, it's already dead. Apple as a company is not. Apple occupies a comfortable niche in the computer market because of its dedicated following and strong video processing capabillities. As long as this remains true, apple will continue to profit and continue to stick around.

However, as a platform, it is long dead. Remember back when Apple dominated the pc market? They were the first company and had the upper-hand. All they had to do was cling to their market share like Microsoft does now. But they didn't fight dirty enough and now they lack the leverage they need to ever reclaim it, no matter how super-special their latest offering might be (and btw, I'm sorry, but for my money, I still I get way more value out of intel or amd's latest offering than Apple's).

Apple no longer even dominates the educational market like it used to. No *serious* gamer uses one, and don't get me started on the desktop market.

Apple isn't dying; it's already dead. A band of dedicated followers and their continued innovation in other fields (think ipod/itunes) will continue to keep apple alive as a company, but I strongly doubt it will ever be taken seriously as a computing platform again.

Bring on the flames. . .

Has anyone heard when the powerbooks will get the G5. I think it may be soon as the powerbook is definatly a major product for apple.

Does anyone know what kind of timeframe until they put the G5 in a PowerBook? I am looking a getting one with a month or so, but would get not be happy if a month later they came out with the G5 version.

Intel sold $3 billion last month.

Apple is still marginal. Great products though.

Compare that to the $1,999.99 apple system.

The x86 solution has the same video card with DOUBLE the vid ram, multi-drives for RAID w/ 10,000 RPM HD solution. A multi-standard dvd burner (I don't know what the SuperDrive does). It has 4 TIMES as much ram, at DDR400 instead of DDR333, and it's dual-channel. It's hyper-threaded. And you have like 500 dollars of difference in cost to upgrade whatever indivudual parts you want...the audigy could upgrade to a damn m-audio audiophile with that kind of cost leeway. The _ONLY_ thing I see that Apple has going for it is the G5, which is supposedly (and believably) a FAR superior chip to anything out there. But last I checked, processor speed wasn't the main bottleneck in machines nowadays. Bah to you Mac zealots. I can build a faster x86 for cheaper that will actually run 99% of the software out there.
