We've covered the initial set of remakes, currently announced for Japanese release only, and including Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone, Monaco GP, Space Harrier, and Golden Axe, but there's now a streaming trailer of the first titles (in 56k and broadband flavors), and details on the next games in the series: "Vol.6:Virtua Racing - remake of Model 1 3D racing game, Vol.7:Last Bronx - remake of the Model 2 arcade fighting game, Vol.8:Phantasy Star 2 - remake of Mega Drive RPG, Vol.9:Phantasy Star 4: The End of Millennium - remake of Mega Drive RPG."

If Nintendo did something along the lines of the Sega Ages program and remade some of their classic NES games for the GC or its sucessor, it'd be a huge success - and since Nintendo's remakes sell very well, we know there's demand for something like this. Wonder if they've got anything like that in the works...

As for the Sega series...I'll be happy when they get to the Sonic games and "Altered Beast."

The Sonic Mega Collection (basically every Sonic game prior to Sonic Adventure) was released for the GameCube, and was never announced as an exclusive title, but I can't find any announcements that state it will be coming soon for XBox or PS2.

I would like to see older Nintendo titles, too, but for now I'm going with the GBA versions of the ones that are available and using the GB Player when I play at home. Of course, with a new console slated for some point in the next year and a half, I doubt they'll go too far into re-releases on the current console unless they plan to have backwards compatibility (and I must say the Ocarina of Time re-release was a pretty good idea, though I wish it had a more general release for those of us that didn't even have a Gamecube when Zelda came out (of course, I picked the remake up used anyway)).

To some extent, they have some on the GBA, with the ecard reader.. it hasn't got very popular in the States though.. (at least with peers my age, so maybe it's different for kids)

They had some old NES games, like Tennis, Donkey Kong, Balloon Fight, Joust.. (which were arcade games anyhow)

And they're pretty cheap, at ~ 5$ a pack of cards, which is a game..

Wasn't Sonic Adventure DX supposed to have like every Sonic Gamegear game hidden inside of it?

I am glad to see the Phantasy Star series being redone for PS2 but why leave out Phantasy Star III. I personally would love to have the entire series redone since I never owned a genesis and only ever played the games via renting the system. I'll assume its because the third installment wasn't as good as 2 or 4 or was a master system first like 1 was.

      Phantasy Star III sucked !!!

It had innovative concepts, like playing as multiple characters and different team combos but the game was poorly executed.

I think anyone used to playing modern RPG's will be disappointed these remakes as the story lines and battle engine are a bit simple by today's standards.

Maybe if they remade it Sega Ages style they'd actually finish the game up. In the original, there were caves that obviously were supposed to lead to a dungeon, but instead said "you can't go in here" or something to that effect.

If they made the combat include the character graphics and finish up some more content in there, it might be a pretty good game actually. But as it was released, yes, it did totally suck.

First off, Grandia II was made by UbiSoft. So who you meant by "they" is a bit confusing, since UbiSoft has absolutely nothing to do with this Sega Ages production.

That being said, I for one am looking forward to this collection, because of the first two titles. Virtua Racing was phenomenal at the time (who would've thought to apply the polygonal structure of Virtua Fighter to a racing game? Yu Suzuki, that's who!) and Last Bronx was a very underrated, but very good game. While I would rather see Fighting Vipers (or Fighter's Megamix) along with Virtua Fighter 2 (best in the series) updated and re-released, the four games Sega's packed in look good to go. If you haven't tried the first pack, give it a shot. Space Harrier is still rediculously fun all these years later.

Don't get me wrong, I love the classics as much as the next bitter, cynical hardcore gamer, but c'mon SEGA, how many times are you just going to re-release the same titles over and over? Phatasy star received a good port to the GBA last year, Golden Axe was on the DC classics collection 2 years ago (or was it 3?) and while Fanatasy Zone hasn't seen the light of day for quite some time, it was never one of the "A-titles" anyway. Just because something is old, doesn't mean that it is good. And how many times are we going to see Sonic Adventure 1 &2 ported around with a name change?

We need more Panzer Dragoon Ortas, and Gun Valkyries not titles that have already been milked to the point of resembling raisins.

Three. What is the point of the Ages series? I'd never heard of it. Are they doing REAL remakes of their classic games? Updated sound, graphics, gameplay, etc., but with the same storyline and everything? That's the kind of remake I like... not this re-release that they call a remake. That's just bleeding more money from the customer from games they made 5-10 years ago.
