Lucas to Make Sequels to Star Wars After All?

SageMadHatter writes "After denying the possibility of three new Star Wars movies taking place after the original triology story line, it appears that the possibility has actually opened up."

There were supposed to be 9 chapters anyway, at least thats what the original intention was.

I don't know when the idea got popularized that there were going to be only 6 movies.

At this point tho, I think there are many who have a firm belief that there are only the original 3, and I for one can't blame them.

Check out this September 2001 quote from Rotten Tomatoes:

In an interview with French TV magazine Télé 7 Jour, "Star Wars" creator George Lucas said that he had no intentions of creating a third trilogy to his popular franchise, even though that's what he had originally intended to do.

Your questions are all answered in the Star Wars books, which, by the way, are far better than any of the movies.

The source and workings of the Force is explained in the most recent series, the New Jedi Order (much better and more shocking than its humdrum title appears) -- NJO features the New Republic nearly being annihilated by a race of aliens, the Yuuzhan Vong, who are not affected by The Force.

Lucas made a net of 400 million on the Phantom Menance alone. The movie grossed far more than this, but this is what Lucas took home personally.
I'm guessing by the time the third one has come out, he'll be another (or close to a) billion dollars wealthier.

There IS actually an official trilogy that follows the events of the OT. The books were written by Timothy Zahn and are quite excellent, the best you can find in the expanded universe in my opinion.

Of course it was "official" when I read it, but that was almost ten years ago, so who knows.

Honestly - is the new trilogy so bad after all? It is different, true, because of the different time. The original trilogy happens during the Imperial reign, and the Galaxy has actually gone backwards a bit. While the new trilogy has the Republic still somewhat in it's glory days and the Galaxy is culturally much more advanced. I myself somehow enjoy all those magnificent costumes, palaces and all.

The story isn't that awesome, agreed, but really, is the original either? I feel a big reason for complaining is that the complainers themselves aren't the same people anymore. I imagine many here are between 30 and 40 - still somewhat young when SW came out. The younger have probly saw them quite long ago too. I just think that the feeling you get from a sci-fi movie at the age of 30 is quite different from what you'd get if you were 15, and that may well be a reason many dislike the new movies.

Kershner kept rejecting scripts and script edits, and kept being professional and caring about his own ideas of the movie, rather than being a suck-up yes-man to Lucas. For RotJ, Lucas surrounded himself with yes-men, and barely managed to get a decent movie made.

Since Lucas continues to deny that he's going to do all 9 films that he originally envisioned, one can only hope that there might be a slim chance that he would giveup his throne and let another filmmaker finish off the last three.

Spielberg, Jackson, or Fincher would be nice.

Hopefully Lucas will get a clue and redeem himself with The Revenge of the Sith, although apparently he's already back in the cutting room after screening it to a bunch of "close" friends.

It's really tragic, because he pushes ILM incredibly hard and uses them as a source of inspiration to refine and make changes to things he hasn't decided on. In the end, a bunch of work from ILM goes either goes unnoticed, or gets exposed in the confines of a short-sighted story element, reducing the effectiveness of the visuals.

I just hope the whole "surfing on a bed of lava" ending turns out better than it sounds.

    Oops.

Maybe Indy 4 will be good enough to remove the predictably bad taste leftover from EP3.

"I've asked him. He won't let me do one." These are the sad words of Steven Spielberg regarding his requests to direct Star Wars being turned down. For years, the director has begged George Lucas for a shot.

"I wanted to do one 15 years ago, and he didn'twant me to do it. I understand why - Star Wars is George's baby." He mentioned he's still very interested in helming a story that takes place in a galaxy, far, far away.

The above quote can be found here. It can also be found at this page hosted by the BBC.

There is also another quote by Spielberg on Lucas which I remember but cannot locate. Spielberg said something about Lucas's editing skills to the effect of: "I would allow George carte blanche to edit any one of my movies." It's a compliment to his editing skills, but sort of a left handed compliment when you think what that might imply about the rest of Lucas's movie making skills.

I don't have a link, but I recall Ep. 2 drawing in far less money than Ep. 1 did, even though it cost at least as much to make. Its gross was quite disappointing compared to blockbusters like Spider-Man

You're right that it didn't make as much as Episode 1 (or nearly as much as A New Hope). But Episode 2 is the 17th highest grossing film of all time. Kind of hard to be disappointed by that. I'm sure DVD sells weren't too shabby either.

    My source

If Lucas were really smart, he'd admit to himself that he sucks at writing screenplays and dialog, and get an expert to do it like he did with Empire Strikes Back. But this seems very unlikely to happen.

    TOTAL agreement there.

of course these episodes 7, 8, and 9 will have nothing to do with any of his original intentions. But. Lucas's intentions change all the time. Here's some interesting quotes:

    Spring 1980 SW newsletter(Bantha Tracks):

"BT: At one point there were going to be twelve Star Wars films.

GL: I cut that number down to nine because the other three were tangential to the saga. Star Wars was the fourth story in the saga and was to have been called, "Star Wars, Episode Four: A New Hope." But I decided people wouldn't understand the numbering system so we dropped it. For Empire, though we're putting back the number and will call it Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back. After the third film in this trilogy we'll go back and make the first trilogy, which deals with the young Ben Kenobi and the young Darth Vader.

BT: What is the third trilogy about?

GL: It deals with the character that survives Star Wars III and his adventures."

1995 reprint of the ESB novel:

GL:"From the onset I conceived Star Wars as a series of six films, or two trilogies."

But, of course, nothing's set in stone. Even if it was, George would change it.

And ... BTW ... are the folks at ILM the biggest snitches on the planet or what. They sign a non-disclosure agreement, then tell people that they just signed one. Jeeze, guys. Let us have some mystery in our lives, will ya.
