Slashdot Goes Political: Announcing politics.slashdot.org

With the US Presidential Election coming up, we've had a lot of story submissions that we would like to post, but they don't fit very well on the Slashdot main page. To address this, we'll be running special political coverage between now and the election in our new Politics subsection of Slashdot. Please submit stories directly to the section for consideration. As with all sections on Slashdot, there will be stories available within that section that don't get posted to the main page, so please visit the section if you are interested in more coverage. We'll do our best to be fair with story selection. We think we can do a good job since the Slashdot editors represent a diverse spectrum of political ideologies. The discussions are up to you guys. Here's hoping the experiment works!

I think politics./. is a good idea, but ONLY US politics? I thought we were past this.. this certainly isn't a US-only site, so why only US politics, especially with the US flag behind the slashdot icon, why not just a general politics section?

not was sure where discuss the Uruguayan elections next month, and this fits like a glove :)

To be serious was about to object that this should be called uspolitics.slashdot.org, that exist a big world outside where politics matters too.

But politics is normally something very local, very specific for only a country (well, unless that country because its politics goes in a way or another beyond borders). And sometimes could be absurd to go to discuss local politics in another language for the non-english speaking countries, unless have some tech slant somewhere to make it not so local.

Another thing... as I see that some previous stories where "migrated" to this section from others, how thin is the line dividing this section from YRO?

Do you pimple-faced geeks really think your half-baked naive political thoughts are really that profound?

Keep the subject to TECHNOLOGY. In the few cases where Tech and Politics meet, that's fine, but I don't want to go to /. to see people argue Bush vs. Kerry vs Nader.

Why have a single flag there? Slashdot is one of the most read nerd sites in the world. I know lots of Europeans reading slashdot that have great insight in computers, science and the world.

Most people here are from the US, so having a US bias is understandable. But why do we nead to harass them by essentially saying American politics is the only politics that matters? I don't see IT having a Microsoft logo in the top left.

So please, call the section american-politics or change the logo, but this is rediculous.

It's hard to believe people would be upset about something like this. Especially over whether there will be more than just "American" point of views. Politics is just that, politics. It can be specific and general. Everyone knows what's associated with it. I for welcome the new addition to the site.
