I've worked for a number of people and myself one thing that seems to come up is that good techies don't always make good managers. So don't assume that managment is right for you (or that you would even enjoy it).
I'm paraphrasing / can't remember where I heard it from but "The goverment should be afraid of the people, not the other way around". The UK is definitely starting to look like we are afraid of the government
I've finally got a desktop setup that is resonably secure, works with all my applications and as long as I'm sensible about installing dogey software free from Viruses and adware all based on XP. There is nothing that attracts me to Vista though I'm sure I will get a free copy next time I buy a PC and I look forward to using that a coaster
If you are on a fast broadband pipe you are correct but there is still a lot of other people on small connections with low upload limits (64k-256kbit) and I can see why this could be a bottle neck as it can't get the requests out fast enough. That said there are things a user can do to help themselves.
Firstly if the ISP has a proxy server then using it will reduce the trip time for some stored content meaning it only has to go over a few hops than prehaps all the way across the world. You can also look at something like Onspeed which is a paid for product but compresses images (though makes them look worse) and content and can give a decent boost on very slow (GPRS/3G) connections and also get more out of your transfer quota.
If you want just the money speak to your bank about a chargeback although it won't get your domain back. The other choice is you can try to catch the domain if/when it drops. Did the registrar renew it or did it get picked up by a linking organisation?
I would hope that the UK's Data Protection Rules will basically tell the US to get lost if they come knocking. However as there is the special relationship I expect it will just be ignored
Well we've had IE7 RC blah and Vista so may as well include Firefox. They could just copy the front page of Freshmeat.net as well then we can get constant updates on software we've never even heard of
If their website host gives them overage charges they might be able to get google to pay. Then again they might get some extra business out of it by change. Either way I would like to see their website stats
I always take my wife as a normal type person who just wants technology to work. She reads email, writes letters and does a little bit of surfing. She doesn't really care about computers and seems to live in her own little bubble. So I posed gave her a quick run down of the UK RIP bill (http://www.guardian.co.uk/theissues/article/0,651 2,334007,00.html) basically saying that the government can come along and watch everything she does on the net, can be put in jail for refusing to give her password out etc and her response was. " As long as I don't do anything wrong why should I worry? "
To me it seems people will only notice things are becoming a police state when its a bit to late. Most/.'ers can see what is coming but the general populs, the ones who vote (though how effective that is I don't know) will happily ignore things until it becomes and issue when the police turn up at the front door
The thing is with most of the population they want to show off what they own and like to have a tangable good. I can either hold up my hard disk and say I've got 1000 MP3's / 50 movies on here in a sub format or have the DVD's and CD's on a shelf what I can take with me if I want to or lend to a friend. Also the physical formats are a lot harder to destory. It doesn't take much to delete a digital copy..
The biggest issue to the security of the system is the human sat on the chair and clicking boxes they shouldn't and installing slightly dogey software. Of course having a decent level of OS secruity helps but taking what MS is doing in Vista with prompting for virtually everything just seems to get annoying. The best solution would be training people there is no point in hacking etc but of course that will never happen as at some level its either to show that people can hack, or money related with botnets etc
I had an account with a small local company and due to a payment / full refund I ended up owing them nothing however their billing system didn't accept that so they sent me a bill for £0.00. So I ignored it until I got a nasty gram saying they were taking me to court for literally nothing. Despite repeated rings they still said that I had a balance. I ended up sending a cheque for £0.00 and then heard nothing more on it..
"I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah."
Now people can go virtual dumpster diving to find out all about you. I will be hoenst that I don't quite understand how this works but from the little I picked up there may be 3rd party broker services. How long before one of those loose a laptop or similar?

Least their batteries can keep you warm on a cold winters night
I've got a stable copy of 2.0.0.beta5 of Gaim so any point in upgrading as its stable and works. Great believe in if it ain't broke don't fix it
If we do live longer to say 150 and you retire at say 70 would you really want to spend 80 years doing nothing..

You can only get expierence by either buying it in or expermimenting. If it goes wrong then just dust yourself off, get up and try again.

You are going to need a very big printer with a roll on one end to get them printed out or could you just stick up loads of sheets of letter :)
It depends if you spend all day reading the troll comments or looking at porn.

It appears that the offer is for US citizens only and with no apparent way of us outside the US getting access. Oh well back to bittorent

Its like the old joke that Uncle Harold died peacfully in his sleep. Its just all his passengers in the car that were screaming
