Halo 2 Pre-Orders Reach 1 Million
pdawerks writes "The Seattle Times is reporting that around a million copies of Halo 2 have been pre-ordered. This pre-sale figure makes the Halo sequel the highest presale in the history of videogames. So far, Microsoft has sold 5 million copies of the original Halo: Combat Evolved."
Yeah, its pretty crazy how many pre-orders there are... The gamestop down the road from my dorm (which serves a campus of around 1400) already had over 800 preorders last month.
College students everywhere are going to be getting a lot more C's and D's come November...
Halo 2 on xbox99
We've all been waiting too long..We're starting to get that 1000 yard stare..
Ain't no such thing as left-over crack.
it doesn't say where it got those numbers. Not to sound like a fanboy but, given the fact that Halo was priced at $50 USD for about 2 years after its release and is still selling fairly strong, I wonder what the number would really look like. And then theres the number of people who will buy it off the shelf...
Even that's not right, although it's far more accurate than, "This pre-sale figure makes the Halo sequel the highest presale in the history of videogames."
In the U.S., Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green each received over 1 million pre-orders. These were clearly released during the history of the Xbox. GameBoy Advance games.
In Japan alone, Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 (girl version, forgot the Japanese version's name) sold over one million pre-orders. It's a Pokemon-clone (monster collection RPG), BTW. GameBoy Color game.
Again, in Japan, Dragon Quest VII sold over 3 million pre-orders. PlayStation game.
I'm sure there are others, but these are what I can think of, Dorakue 7 being the one that most easily comes to mind.
In the UK it's November 11th, but that's assuming online companies don't send it out early. But I'm being cheap and using Super Saver delivery, so it'll arrive before Christmas, guaranteed, thanks to the Royal Mail.
10 PRINT "LOOK AROUND YOU ";
20 GOTO 10
Being the ultra-cool guy I am, I work at a game store. We've got hundreds of pre-orders, for both the game, and the limited edition. We're even planning on having a "Halo Party" on midnight Nov. 8th where people who preordered it can pick it up and hang out with other Halo fans.
Halo 2 is easily going to be the #1 title of the year, despite having only 2 months to work with. GTA San Andreas isn't even coming close presell wise.

i've never owned any computers other than macs.. I owned every copy of marathon they released... i'm not pissed about halo being an xbox game... that just means that i can play it from the comfort of my couch on my 32" tv while listening to teh sounds over my 5.1 surround sound system... oh yeah, i play it with my kids and friends too... that sure beats the hell out of playing it on my powermac 7100/66 or my g3 imac... actually i probably would never have played it because i wouldnt upgrade my computer for it...
I can't speak too much about the single player part, but I liked the multiplayer a lot. It has some key differences from the standard FPS, most notably that you move pretty slowly, and that you can only carry two weapons. This makes it less of a twitch skill game, and more about planning strategies to hunt down your enemies. I played the PC version for several months with some friends (before they decided it would be more fun to play pistols only with no radar - thanks for removing the strategy bit, guys!) , but I imagine that these differences would be emphasized even more on the Xbox, where the controller would slow movement down even more.
Yeah, imagine how upset the 5 million people who bought Halo were when they got that sub-par game..
A game that fuels LAN parties and has a giant following.
Not a Twitter sockpuppet... but I wish I was.
"In the history of the X-Box," doesn't mean as long as the X-Box has been out, it means "Of games for the X-Box."
Not a Twitter sockpuppet... but I wish I was.
...that despite the huge number of pre-orders, it still won't be hard to find a copy of Halo 2 come November 9th. Microsoft is obviously aware of how huge this game launch is, and will probably have printed multiple millions of copies of the game, simply to allow anyone who wants one to be able to find it, and completely flood the stores with copies. You bet your ass I'll be picking up my copy on November 8th at midnight...
It really is probably the fact that you played on the PC. I'm not a big FPS fan anyway (Rainbow Six is my exception), but on the Xbox Halo was just fun. The single player was difficult and time-consuming, but not really too hard, but the real beauty lies in the multi-player. You can start playing with 4 people at 11pm...blink...and it's 4am. You're other reply said something about stategy and that's also a real big part, when playing teams (even FFA) strategy comes into play so much more than most other FPSs out there.
Maybe a better wording would have been "in the history of people nitpicking".
I have a lot of opinions about Cyborgs and Architects
"people nitpicking"? In the world of press releases and buyer perception, making that kind of claim is huge. Of course, this isn't Microsoft making that claim, it's some fanboy news submitter. Regardless, lots of people here will repeat it as truth, even after Zonk puts an editor's note on the article.
No-one would have known. I've got three Macs and I wouldn't have known. Thank fuck they switched to a major console.
What irritates me even more is the fact that hlaf the people touting the Xbox then turn around and yell about microsoft and how everyone should use linux.
Sorry for the rant.
Some people feel that way, but how's this for a list of great console games? Rainbow Six 3 (both of them) , ToCA Race Driver 2, Project Gotham 2, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Ghost Recon (the PS2 versions suck), Links 2004, Rallisport Challenge 2... And those are just the ones I play online. Personally, I'm not sure if I'm looking more forward to Halo 2, or Ghost Recon 2, both of which come out in November, then Forza Motorsport early in the year, which is now the only online true simulation racing game since GT4 lost that functionality, and then Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory in March. Mechassault 2 is looking pretty good too. Halo 2 is so hyped up because of how good the first one was, whether you agree or not with that opinion. I actually know people that don't even own Xbox's but do own controllers, simply to be able to play Halo multiplayer with other people.
Isn't it interesting that the music industry can't sell 5 million copies and the gaming industry can.
BBC Piracy documentary with interviews with RIAA insiders.
Who's the dominant medium now biotch!
(had to be said).
Halo 2 better be the second coming of your favorite messianic figure then, otherwise largest videogame presell number ever might turn into largest videogame mob ever. What's working against MS and bungie is that Halo has a mythic, nostalgic quality that few games ever attain. If Halo 2 ends up being a Phantom Menace, its ramifications could even hurt sales of Xbox2. There's a lot more to lose here than there is to gain.
Here's hoping. I have my copy preordered (thanks to a ridiculously generous Blockbuster trade in offer).
Blue team has the flag.
Where did that grenade come from?
Red team-flag returned!
Game: Player 'Donald J Trump' now has AI skill level 'experimental'.
So you're choosing not to get a game that you will probably enjoy because.. you don't like a company?
If you don't like Microsoft, why don't you hope they stay in the console buisness? It costs them money to do so.
Not a Twitter sockpuppet... but I wish I was.
Trust me, there will not be a supply shortage. The manufacturing cost per copy is very low. You will not get your copy ANY sooner by preordering. You are only providing a no-interest advance to the publisher.
I wouldn't even call you a fanboy, that's too good of a title. A true gamer recognizes awesome games regardless of platform. Unless you literally have a piece of electronics shoved firmly up your ass, your senseless allegience to a large consumer electronics manufacturer is just plain silly. As Sean Connery would say - suck it long, and suck it hard.
I'm still waiting for the XBOX to get one.
(Yes I'm bored today. :-)
I also don't recall mentioning any particular XBOX competitor. I support all the ones with good games: Cube, PS2, GBA, DS, PSP, etc. No N-GAGE, no XBOX, etc.)
Don't think of it as a flame---it's more like an argument that does 3d6 fire damage
Yeah. That's kinda weird.
Don't think of it as a flame---it's more like an argument that does 3d6 fire damage
I think you may be a little hard on the Fable and the Halo, but in essence you're correct. My favorite X-Box games were ToeJam & Earl III and Serious Sam, and they're old.
But then the games I've played the most of the past two months have been Pikmin 2 and WarioWare. It's obvious where my own loyalties lie.
Someone used to have the sig of "Do not taunt the happy monkey funball!" (or something to that effect)
I'd like to say "Do not forget the happy fun of Burnout 3!"
No, it's not an Xbox exclusive. But I don't really care- it's just a damn fun game.
"Do not forget the happy fun of Burnout 3!"
No reason to lie.
In light of GTA 3's amazing sales and appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers, it was no surprise that the next offering in the series, "Vice City", quickly earned staggering pre-order sales of close to 4 million nationwide; (Source.)
I'm not going to swear 4 million is completely accurate, but even if it's off by 50% it's still 2 million.
Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive feat for Halo 2. But it will be interesting to see the next GTA's pre-sale numbers. On the one hand they may be lower from just more competition in general, but the sheer number of 15-turned-17 year olds that can now buy it without mommy should drive the number up a bit.
R: That voice. Where have I heard that voice before? B: In about 365 other episodes. But I don't know who it is either.
In short: NO, there isn't a shortage of great games for the XBox.
Funny you mention the PSP and DS - how many of those games have you played? What's the matter.. not enough RPG's featuring half-naked man-boys with big doe eyes?
WHat do you expect when Halo is the only decent XBox title to date, if it wasn't for Halo the XBox would be in a sorry state.
Of course everyone is hanging out for the 2nd good game for the XBox.
Where does this number come from? I've often wondered what the total number sold of a given game is, and damned if I can't find that sort of info on the web. I mean, what if I wanted to know the total number of copies of Half Life or Diablo or any other game? Is there a web site with this info?
You hurt my brain. So, MS wins because they don't sell a CD set it cost them $3 to make to you for $50+? Explain that one, Einstein.
... damn kiddy-proof caps...)
(Where's my Tylenol?
I don't consider Morrowind, KOTOR, Crimson Skies and Splinter Cell to be exclusive titles for the X-Box.
I have most of them for the PC as well.
Most X-Box bashing here comes from the linux zealots, they may be right, but MS has delivered an ok product with the X-Box, not that I'm buying though.
This is the sig that says NI (again)
It's funny you mention linux because I run that as my OS of choice and were it not for the Xbox, I wouldn't even have the chance to play these games.
That may be true, this proves that you're not a zealot :) (meaning you're not as narrowminded as them, even though they often make very good points)
This is the sig that says NI (again)
If this continues, the XBox project may even turn some kind of a profit instead of being a mega-million pound loss from start to finish.
What is a "pre"-sale?!?!?
i think it's called a 'reservation'!
