Star Wars Galaxies: JTL Release Date Confirmed
Thanks to GameGossip for the news that the Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed expansion has been confirmed for an October 27th release. The expansion adds space combat, two new player races, and a bunch of new emotes.

With JTL coming out, I'm tempted to take a look at SWG again, especially since I now have the hardware to run it better. Still, I'm going to wait and see. It'll be interesting to see if the JTL action cannibalizes "ground" activities. I know it's all the same game, but I have a hunch that we're about to see something of a split.
To the making of books there is no end, so let's get started
As a veteran SWG player, my advice is to stay the hell away from SWG and it's expansion for at least 3 months. It is extremely likely that the bugs that this expansion ships with and the exploits it makes possible will make the game suck even more for several months. The core game still suffers from serious problems that were known in its beta and have been irritating customers since launch.
They are trying to get this product to market before EQ2 and WoW divide and conquer the MMO retail dollar, and from SOE, an early or on time launch means you are paying to be in beta.
a.k.a. another way for game companies to milk more cash from would-be buyers. Definitely much easier than releases a whole new game. An expansion can be put together in a matter of 6-7 months. I guess it has it's good and bad sides. Sorry, don't mean to be negative. I'm sure it's a decent expansion.

This must mean the expansion is complete garbage if the NDA is still up (was up as of a couple days ago talking to the IGN site manager for SWG).

Well, now they will try to add the "Stars" to the non-existant wars in Star Wars Galaxies. This will have little effect on the overall way the game is played.
This game isn't at all about wars and it really won't be about stars either. It's the sims online in a "star wars" like theme. I would expect the emotes and new player races to have a bigger impact on the game than space combat.
I'm in beta, and happy to answer any questions you might have.
To answer your first, yes it's more of the same "plenty of potential, half-assed implementation with a side order of mind-numbing fun-draining grind" you've come to expect from Sony Online Entertainment.
I know I can wait! Now back to modding Fable. >=)
For what it is worth:
SWG has a VERY sketchy track record. The company that runs it has been at best deceptive about where the game is going and getting bugs fixed, balance issues addressed, give some point to the Galactic Civil War, etc. etc. etc.
Do NOT expect JtL to be ANY better than SWG was at launch. Buggy, laggy, etc. Read up on some of the forum information at it appears that the JtL expansion is more poorly developed than Earth and Beyond was. That speaks volumes.
Frankly, SOE nor LA will ever see another dime from me. And with good reason. HUGE potential squandered. If LA retakes leadership and implementation of this game, it MIGHT get better, but I have little faith of that either.
The new crop of MMORPG's will chew most of the meat out of SWG, and leave it what it deserves to be: an also ran.

Guess it is time to say goodbye to a friend.
Better yet, don't come back until they really get finished improving it and making all the changes. I loved playing SWG at first...I even had a blast roleplaying in it. I played one of the tradeskills that was unltimately broken at launch and made it work well...very well...I was pulling in millions of credits a day..then the devs completely revamped my profession and took away my really good things to make and threw in the holocron rampaged that made it really suck. Everyone was grinding holocrons for their Jedi, and then they changed that. It just cheapened the game to basically reveal how to become a jedi. It should have been a huge secret forever and then people could just enjoy playing the game. They should have fixed the skills that needed fixing when they needed it, adding tweaks and pokes when they needed to instead of retooling the whole game engine in cycles that have far outlasted the game's playability. I loved this game and they destroyed and cheapened it.
Now, it's less than a mediocre game that still has more than 80% of the promised improvements just over the horizon of the future. We should not be paying for new races in an expansion. Maybe a new planet or six, but not two new races. Have many MMORPGs made a routine commitment to add new content and new races for free? They keep pushing off the needed improvements to get the expansion out there and they've just made a confused pile of worthless code and content that is about to get thrown into the trash compactor when the game folds next year.
I tried the JTL Beta. I keep trying it every week even though I get nasty-grams every couple days wishing me to come back to beta...I'm there!! I was just on!!! I'm trying to like it!! But I don't.
I was in SWG in beta and I had high hopes for it. October 27, 2004, will be known in throughout the galaxy as the day SWG finally died..it's also the same exact day my subscription runs out.
BTW-I don't think Lucas Arts could do anything to help SOE improve it. Look at the crap GL did to the GL revised editions of the movies. (Let's not open that discussion again, but just say that change can be good, and can be bad). If they improve..and there's a chance, then I might be back, but it will take months for them to improve it, and months for them to prove it to me.
If you are reading this, then you are one of those people whom I just can't take seriously.
Huh? No NDA-breaking info was said here.
Swim away! Swim away! Swim away! SWG = Nerf this JTL = Nerf this (in space) Swim away! Swim away! Swim away!
I know, but the mere fact that the NDA is STILL up a week before retail release....
is not good.
