iTunes Expands In Europe

jawtheshark writes "I found just out today that Apple launched the iTunes store in serveral more European countries. Countries include : Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Apparently it launched 26 october 2004, making this a late submission.       www.itunes.be is not even registered by Apple...

      Uhh, guys. Um, real sorry... I went on a tour round ESA's labs, and like, I really needed some time horizontal. You know how it is...
      so anyway, I saw this thing they were working on, climbed inside, and shut the door. Oh, man, was that a mistake! Turned out it was the Ion drive craft. Only just got back from the moon. Of course, it was dark, so I didn't see anything. didn't even have a window there. Guess they didn't expect anyone to be on board...
      Real sorry guys... did I say that already? Oh man!

    Hellooo? I'm over here.. In a country called Canada. WTF? I have moneeeyyy... don't make me buy from Microsoft -- they're already open here; Future Shop has an online music store here with 500,000 songs; Wal-Mart is open here; Apple, what's the holdup?

      Back when they announced this, they said they'll be coming to Canada in November. Technically, they still have two more weeks, but it's coming.

    Some stuff that bothers me in iTMS Belgium:
    - our music selection is a fraction of that of the US
    - people in Belgium also speak Dutch (63% of them) and German. French is cool, but not everyone understands it.
    - we are all the fun categories? House, Techno, Lounge, Acid?
    - World music? Where's our own Helmut Lotti (yech!!)

      Complains shouldn't be directed at Apple but at the artist (or the producing company).
      I don't wanna go with the iTMS it's their fault, not Apple's....

      I also found that somewhat odd, as Ireland uses the euro -- I mean, Sweden and Denmark wanted to "keep their independence" and opted out of monetary union, so at first I supposed that no non-Euro EU country (except the UK) got the iTMS. But the exclusion of Ireland does not follow this logic.

      Then among the non-€ countries are also the new eastern states of the Union (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Cyprus, Malta), but most of them still have so little purchasing power that opening iTMS in them wouldn't make much sense for Apple anyway. Besides, Apple is relatively unknown company in most of these countries (there are no Apple webstores, for example).

      It has nothing to do with the Euro or any other currency. It's to do with licensing issues. We'll get our store eventually.

      Given the way you lot (the Germans) and the French, amongst others, have been breaking the rules established to ensure a stable currency, some of us who did join (and studiously obeyed said rules) are now wondering if maybe the Swedes, Danes and Brits weren't right all along? Oh, that's right... the rules don't apply to the big countries. Arrogance.

      Ooh, touchy touchy! Why doesn't your government obey the very rules it insisted upon? You know what I'm talking about. Before you get snotty with the Swedish poster, or me, perhaps you should consider that. The Swedes had very good reasons for not joining and those should be respected.

    Why do the Tunes cost 0.99 Euro, even with the exchange rate $ / Euro being as low as it is?
    $0.99 = E 0.77

      Errr... maybe because they have to pay the European labels, the employees, the bandwith and all the infrastructure in Euros, you think??

      It would be stupid if they charge 99 US cents when they have to pay 60 Eurocents to labels and 20 Eurocents to credit card payments, etc., wouldn't it?

      Also, you may need to consider sales taxes (aka VAT) in your comparison if they are levied on the purchases. It may not account for all of the difference, but it could account for some (particularly when sales taxes can be up to 25% in some EU countries from what I understand).

      Uh, because 0.99 sounds like a round number. Since copyright is a monopoly, the price of a copyrighted nothing is based on market psychology rather than production cost.

      I have known that to be a fact for quite some time now. But I thought they'd at least make an effort NOT to go for the cheap 1-0,1 (hence the 0,99) option, which after all remains just a marketing trick...

    I've only been using iTunes for a week, and I'm in love! Songs for 99 cents a pop can not be beaten by the other stores (especially the ones with a subscription fee!)

    I don't get it, outside the US, Japan has one of the biggest populations of Apple devotees (they even made Japanese switch commercials). Plus, pop music is an obsession over there. I can't afford to spend $30 on imported CDs, and I'm not going to buy Taiwanese bootlegs. I want my JPop dammit!

    Sooo wrong. I've got contact with Apple Belgium and they are just powerless against Apple Europe which is ruled by a Cupertino based. They know zilch about Belgians and their musical behaviour
