2006 actually. The UMD is a modified BRD and Sony is the main backer of the BRD format and this is their one and only chance to get more BRD players out there than HDDVD players. If Nintendo joined them (so far only DVd playback is confirmed for the Rev), BRD might be able to kill HDDVD.

If Sony decides to release PS3 this year, it's going to one hell of a rush job. I mean, they're not even ready to demonstrate it at this point -- it's unthinkable that they're going to release it this year. And don't forget the three to nine months delay from Sony releasing it in Japan before it is released in the US and Europe.

Since Sony are widely expected to demonstrate the machine in 2 days time, being "not even ready to demonstrate it" isn't that relevant, especially when you consider that Microsoft are currently claiming they will have the Xbox360 in shops this year and they were ""not even ready to demonstrate it" until about 17 hours ago.

Ok, point taken. However, Sony has continually stated that PS3 won't be out on the market until 2006 at the earliest, and cancelled a PS3 showing a few months back because neither the system nor any games/demos were ready. Slashdot had a story about it.

Anyway, it's all just a marketing thing. Sony just want people to delay their Xbox360 purchase until PS3 is out. Personally, I'll buy both systems :)

For at least one year, many XBox360 games will seem to be XBox games ported to the new video and sound capabilities. If Sony follows suit, we may be looking at just game demos for 6 months.

They're 'hinting' that it's possible that they'll release the PS3 in 2005 because they want people to just get that 'shadow of a doubt' before they rush out and get an XBox2 *knowing* (supposedly) the PS3 is at least a year away.

For them, just getting your to stop for a second and consider maybe waiting for the PS3, compairing the 2 systems and *then* deciding which one to get will be enough for them...
