Virtual Magic Kingdom Beta Launches

Via the Wonderland Blog, the news that Disney's Virtual Magic Kindgom has launched in a Beta state. The virtual space allows you to game some of the popular Magic Kindom rides, such as Pirates and Jungle Cruise. From the launch site: "For a limited time you can be one of the first Guests to live inside Disney's new online multi-Player game. Create your own adventures, control your Character and interact with Players from around the globe! Share thrilling competitions, exciting adventures and endless interactive Disney magic on the Internet. Help us make this online world a better place to play!"

    ...a first-person shooter set in the "It's a Small World" ride, then count me in!

      A possible mod would convert the Kingdom to Duff Gardens, with puppets in the "It's a Small World" ride singing "Duff beer for me, Duff beer for you, I'll have a Duff, you have one too!"

      Maybe, but to a 3-year-old, it's the most wonderous thing ever seen. Which I suppose is the point of the ride to begin with, to instill that sense of wonderment in little children.

      I Totally agree... however, considering the number of times I litterally dragged my parents in there when they brought me to Disneyland as a (very young) kid, I should be more 'patient' with that ride.

      ha, hell, no, I'd just love a FPS in there now that I have that damm song stuck in my head. Aaaarrrggghhh !

      My sister and I did the same thing but with the Eastern Airlines "If You Had Wings" ride at Disneyworld. Why? Two reasons... first it actually was pretty cool, and second, you didn't need a ticket to ride it.

      This was back in the days of A, B, C, D, and E tickets.

      That song still goes through my head 30 years later.

      No, I think it's going to use "whuffie" for the in-game currency. Of course, earning it via your reputation in an ad-hoc-cracy sounds like the same old "level grind" to me...

    You know, considering it's for kids and all. I wonder how they would protect kids from pedophiles. On the other hand, it's nice that's it's only open when they can moderate it. People living in dodgy timezones will have a problem with that thought... I had bad past experince with events happening in midnight. :P

    Have there been any online "virtual reality" chat for kids before? >_>

    But it being spelled kindom, so it's must be a really nice chat. ;)

      Actually, they handled this quite well in Disney's first MMO, ToonTown Online. They only allowed communication between characters via a pre-scripted chat (click and select your comments and responses), thereby not allowing anyone to communicate directly with one another unless they had been given express permission to, or knew each other in real life.
      I thought it was a very responsible step towards protecting kids from bad language and anyone who might mean them harm.

      It's got opening times. Much like the real park, then. I'll be signing up as soon as it opens in GMT..

      I'm guessing that that would help to prevent the vast majority of those "after midnight" incidents from ever happening.

      Good lord! You must be talking about the mouse-ear hats. Right? Because for a second there, I was pretty sure you were planning on repeatedly killing Mickey and ripping his ears off. It just wasn't fitting with my impression of how this game was going to work. ;)

      Oh, crimety. I understand why they're doing it and all, but Toontown (chat via pre-screened phrases available on a drop-down categorized menu, similar to how FFXI handled translation) was a much better implementation. You don't need to use any naughty words to say naughty things -- in fact, you can say naughty things using almost any non-trivial restricted vocabulary.

      We were doing some direct hardware to hardware interfacing, real Plug & Play, when suddenly she switched from client to server mode and the resulting spike in my CPU graph caused me to dump core.


      I guarantee you sick bastards are going to be able to get Goofy with your Mickey no matter how restrictive they make the whitelist.

    The Pirates of the Caribbean game is fun... Of course, nowhere as entertaining as Pirates!, what with the unresponsive controls and all... Too bad they censored "Arr", "arrr", "arrr", "arg", "arrg" and all other pirate words I could think of. Really dumbed down chat! Stops abuse, though, I guess, which is a good thing...

      Apparently, they're using a white list to control the chat filter. So if it's not a naughty word but the VMK people weren't clever enough to think of it, you can't say it. If this were a game I paid for, I might even find the energy to be angry about that.

    3. the faulty odors at the lines.
    4. the long long long LOOONG lines.
    5. impossible to see parades unless you camp on main street sidewalk 2 hours b4 the show.
    6. the impossible the walk through streets.
    7. the high prices for everything.

    so the virtual experience is as unreal as the matrix.

      a younger sibling of mine played the Konami (theyre IP (as in Intelectual property not Internet protocol :P ) anyway) Yugioh Online game think... kinda like an online MMORPG trading card game lol

      Among the censor list was "good"

      online censoring in mulitplayer games seems to be a fad for even vaugely kiddy like stuff.

    How do they expect kids to play this thing? It takes forever to set up cuz you have to click through a load of legal mumbo jumbo and licences. What the heck. Also, talking to other people is impossible. The pre approved words list is limited to "Disney", "rules", "is", "great" (you can't say good). you cant say numbers. You can't do anything. My roomname that I created was very limited. The only name that I could actually get to work was "Fun for kids!" And I think the name of the room was funland. Needless to say, it was a misnomer. Fortunately, they didnt have a sarcasm detector in their rooms. So I think everyone understood when I told them all what a great time I was having.

    p.s. Mickey sucks

    huh? i've never had a problem with Cast Members harrassing me. As a general rule, Disney CM's are the most courteous, friendly and helpfull customer-service workers anywhere. One thing Disney parks have never done, is the "hard sell" for things like souvenier photos, or annoying boardwalk-style games. They're there, but never pushed on you. The same can't be said for Universal or Six Flags however.....

    dude you sound like a disney rep, my sister got security called on her because she was standing where she was not supposed to during a parade, but thank god all she had to do was to start crying to get the gorillas away and get a supervisor who "solved" her problem.
