Metroid Prime Hunters Will Go Online

HarvardFrankenstein writes "A Nintendo press release confirms what many people have already speculated: the recent delay of the release of the Nintendo DS game, Metroid Prime Hunters, will give the developers time to implement support for the upcoming Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. From the release: 'Metroid Prime Hunters will launch in the first quarter of 2006, complete with access to Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's upcoming online gaming service. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will debut before the end of the year with a Mario Kart® and an Animal Crossing® game, and will let players connect wirelessly with one another as easily as if they were sitting in the same room.' This is excellent news, as many people felt that the first person shooter would suffer heavily without online multiplayer support."

It was either in their plan from the begining or Nintendo is one of the few companies that really listens to their customers. Whatever the case may be, this is great news!

Have you had a chance to play Geist? Kindof a mediocre game, but multiplayer online for that game would be great.
I haven't played it, but the idea of having a highly interactive invironment full of gaurds, animals, devices, and dowakies to posess and cause havok! Just the idea of not knowing where somebody could be hiding!
Is that dog a player? or is he just looking at me funny? OH CRAP! SNIPER.... well let your mind run wild.
What about CTF? Got a few guys possessing gaurds, one guy is a dog (for those tiny crawl-holes you need speed in), another is taking care of electronic lock-outs, another is a bird for look-out.
I think an large interactive world like that would be rather fun for death-matches, CTF, and probably every other FPS Multi-player game.

Anybody who thinks that any game would be delayed just for shits and giggles is being idiotic to begin with. I wouldn't pay much attention to them.

Me: *SNIFF* Now, now you say Hunters won't be out till first quarter 2006?! Wha.... what have I done to upset you?

Nintendo Rep: Are you talking about Metroid Prime Hunters, sir?

Me: Was it because I never called after that night I finishing Wind Waker? Or is it because Metroid Prime 2 is still unfinished because I have been busy with work? I will do better!

Nintendo Rep: Bob, is that you? Stop screwing around.

Me: I PROMISE! Please, please, my DS and I are so lonely......

It is nice to know that the online component isnt being tacked-on in a rush. Of course, Nintendo has never been shy of delaying things (consoles, games, hardware, whatever).
Knowing that they havent been working on the online component this whole time, that gives me a better feeling about the single-player portion of the game. I suppose that is what they have been working on this whole time, and I am quite glad.

It is becoming all too common these days that a game will sacrifice the single-player portion of the game just to add on a fleshed-out online multiplayer portion that people will only play for a week before moving on to the next one.

I mean seriously, Nintendo has to be one of the most trustworthy companies in the industry. Sure they've had some flops but they all have been something radically new/different or well intentioned.

Everyone was frothing at the mouth when the delays were published, but sometimes a delay is a good thing. Gamers are a pissy bunch to deal with, they whine and bitch about buggy unfinished games and they whine and bitch abut delay's to improve buggy incomplete games. I personally would rather put up with a delay or two to get a finished product instead of being a paying beta tester to struggle until patch after patch is released.

Seriously, Nintendo has the brass set to delay big titles to ensure that they are up to par, and even go beyond. More true gamers should be behind them and in their endeavor with the Revolution as they are truly the last company FOR gamers and focusing on gameplay and quality in hardware and software. I especially think that if they can make some form of development kit for free/low cost for the Revolution all the /.'ers will have finally found a geek friendly console and company.

I agree with you, except for one thing: we really don't know a damn thing about the Revolution yet. It seems premature to just say 'lets all get behind Nintendo' before we see the thing, its controllers, and its game linup. As for the 'development kit' - I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. Big N has *no* history of doing any such thing. They delayed Metroid Prime Hunters because as it was, it was going to ship minus a feature that practically every gamer thought was essential. They did the right thing, delayed the product and added the feature. They deserve credit for righting a bad design decision with a highly anticipated DS title. It bodes well, but lets wait for the Revolution (thats not even the final name yet!) before we crown them, yes?

No, your post is just lacking any thought. The Nintendo SEAL of Approval shows that the game has passed rigorous testing (much moreso than Sony or MS)... any homebrew games I'm sure will not get approval of any kind and thus be hit-or-miss. But the simple fact that the community will quickly float the best stuff to the top and the dregs will be left at the bottom.

So no, it is not contradictory at all. In fact I have about 10 non-licensed original NES carts and a number of them are very good games. The hardware that you are playing on is the same quality Nintendo hardware, the development tool sare as well, the software you are running is the only variable... and I for one would be glad to sift through a bunch of cool homebrew and small studio games to find some real gems.

Remember where Doom came from? Duke Nukem? and countless other shareware titles that became big. This is hardly a problem, what happened to the Linux "more choice is better" attitude. Your argument flies contrary to our ethos compeltely. I'd rather have hundreds of titles where natural selection will bring the winners to the top over the same old big-studio games that are derivitive and clones of more of the same.
