MTV Making Better Gaming TV Than G4TV?

heartless_ writes "GamerGod.com has an interesting look into how MTV has shifted to provide essential gaming television in a way that G4TV never was and never will be able to. From the article: 'As G4TV now begins to fall off the gaming-centered line up and into a dull Spike TV rip-off, it is apparent that gamers would rather play games than watch TV shows about gaming. This doesn't mean all the shows on G4TV were horrible, but none of them can be considered any sort of success." I would disagree. X-Play, and Icons are both shows worth watching, but on a channel that at one point was 'for gamers', only two decent shows is pretty pathetic.

Arena was a program where two teams competed in multiple games to see who won. The format was 5v5, but instead of having pro teams or even people who knew eachother, it was simply whoever came to the studio that day. On top of that, the gameplay footage was shown in 30 second clips with simply a summary of who did what and what the score is.

G4 is the first (and hopefully the last) channel that refused to actually show raw, uncut footage of the thing that it was geared around. Imagine a cooking channel that didn't show any cooking because "that's too boring", and instead showed the person talking about cooking, and a quick 30 second montage of them making a pie or cake.

I disagree with one thing you said, however. I don't think they should show the first 3 hours of a new game, because many people prefer to play those things and discover stuff on their own. Also, networks would have a hell of a time convincing game publishers to agree to that. It would cut out a lot of the incentive of buying the game.

I think they should show experts running through games that are 1+ years old. That way it's not new, and there would be less of a chance of spoiling anything. Also, it could revitalize interest in an older game.

Game previews should stop being 30 second clips with no information. Right now there's no benefit to watching previews on G4 over downloading the videos myself -- unless I'm eating and am too lazy to move my mouse around. I'd love for a game preview to be 5-10 minutes of an expert playing through a game -- or maybe even a novice. Again, game publishers might have a problem with this, because it's in their interest not to show too much of a game. Just hype it and let consumers take a leap of faith and buy it for themselves.

I'd love to see a game dedicated to boss fights. It could run through a bunch of bosses for various games, and show different ways to beat them. It could be similar to Cinematech, only substantive enough to hold my interest. (Mine in particular, because as long as I'm wishing for stuff... =)

I think that what Tech TV is what it should be. That was the best version ever. You had your shows for gaming, techies, and even shows for non techies who wanted help. It was great! I absolutely love watching about Gates, Dell, Jobs, & company. But the one thing I loved the most was the other show series that appealed to geeks like Thunderbirds, Max Headroom(it took me a bit to like it but I loved the idea), and the movies they would show.

In contrast, I see what G4 is trying to do but it wont work that way for gamers. They are trying to link racing, sex, and violence to gaming. 1 and a half of those dont work with gamers. Racing sure is a good portion of gaming now and days... but honestly, we dont need to watch a large number of MTV like show about it. And most gamers are interested in sex, its great and all, but how many games involve it?(Ok, this side of the pond in america, I know its in great numbers in Japan.) I have a feeling they are trying to apeal to people who think they might be gamers and try to convince them that they are. But while doing all of that they alienate the "True Gamers". We all know who the real gamers are... those of us who game for extended amounts of time. We dont need people saying "YEA YO GOT GAME! YO GAMMER MAN!" And thats what is getting stuffed down our gullets.

I would like to state one for the record though: If MTV starts getting good game shows, I will watch it. But the moment they put a hip-hop feel to it... they lose all credibility. This is why I like X-play.

Why do people who get PAID to program Network TV never think of these things?

Everyone here is talking about how great X Play is. Am I the only one who doesn't like it?
The reviews are amazingly useless. For example, the Nintendogs review went on for about 10 minutes and featured nothing but the same "Chinese people eat dogs, lol!" joke over and over again. They concluded it with, "In the end, this game basically works. 4/5." In the time it took me to watch that I could have read useful reviews for 5 or 6 different games, from competing sources.
It's pretty hard to get "deep" about video games in a TV show, but it's only acceptable if the show ends up being entertaining. These jokes are pathetic.
That, and the /5 rating system is pointless and rarely corresponds with what they've actually said about the game. They basically said they'd be surprised if anyone ended up enjoying the latest RPG Maker game. Its score? 3/5. That's 60% for something that, in their opinion, is completely unplayable and has terrible graphics.

X-Play's ratings system is actually pretty decent for a television show. You don't really need any more granularity than that to say whether you think a game's good or not, especially given that each of their reviews is only on the order of a couple of minutes.

Heck, I seem to remember seeing some obscure movie review show where they rate movies either 'Good' or 'Bad'... has something to do with thumbs...

No, that's 50%. Their scale has no zero, so the lowest a game can be rated is 1/5. Any worse than that and it stays unrated and lampooned as a "Game You Should Never Buy" such as:

      • "Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue" (PS2)
      • "Monster Garage" (PC), and
      • "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing" (PC)

"Games so bad we couldn't review them because our rating scale doesn't have a zero. Don't say we didn't warn you."

      'X-PLAY' RATINGS
written by X-Play staff on Monday, April 14, 2003

Here's a breakdown of what the 'X-Play' ratings mean.
      Five stars: Our highest recommendation
Five-star games are a rarity. This is a landmark title that every gamer should consider owning. Even gamers who aren't fans of the genre will enjoy playing this game. It may have some slight flaws, but the ambition of the title and what the developer was able to successfully pull off more than make up for any shortcomings. If games are indeed art, these are masterpieces.

      Four stars: Great
A fine example of gaming. Fun to play through and through. Easily one of the best examples of the genre. Very little is wrong with this title, but gamers who don't like the game's genre won't enjoy this game. Or, the game has all the trappings of a five-star title but suffers from one or two serious design flaws that affect gameplay.

      Three stars: Average
These are fun-to-play, pretty solid titles with a few minor flaws. This is not a poor rating. Most games will fall into this category. There's just little to differentiate this title from the rest of the pack. The game lacks technical or design polish but is still enjoyable. It'll certainly appeal to fans of the genre.

      Two stars: Fair
Not too much here to recommend. There's some fun to be had with this title, but we're seen its likes a million times before. There are technical or design flaws that significantly hamper gameplay. It may be worth a rental, but only die-hard fans of the genre should consider purchasing it.

      One star: Poor
We cannot recommend this title under any circumstances. Be it shoddy design or game-stopping bugs, there are just too many things wrong with this game for gamers to bother playing it.

To enjoy X-Play you need to realize that the most entertaining parts are when they mercilessly review bad games, the occasional skits, and theme episodes.
