Still too expensive. Some of their screens, sure. I know AMC's done that at a few, as has Lowes and maybe Regal. But it's still too expensive. And even if it weren't, you still have the problem of the film distributors not making the films in the approrpriate digital format.

So in order to keep thier screens full of a strong variety of movies, they'll have to have "analogue" projectors as well on a majority of those screens.

As far as THX, having your theatres THX certified doesn't say anything about their commitment to digital and audio/visual excellence. SDDS is just as good as THX, and cheaper. Cheaper because THX requires *huge* hoops and hurdles to go through in order to be "THX certified". You have to pay for the technology, pay for the certification, pay pay pay. And then the only movies that show the true "high quality" THX is capable of, are movies designed to use the enhancing capability of THX.

When Star Wars, Episode I came out many people might remember all the restrictions Lucas put on the films. For those of you who keep track of the Theatre Industry you'll also remember that these restrictions were the "straw that broke the camel's back" causing nearly every Theatre Exhibitor to file bankrupcy.

Origianlly one of the restrictions was that you had to THX certify every theatre you played it in. There's a reason that restriction was removed well before the movie actually released.

    Century's not big enough.

The Syufy's have done a good job with their theatre so far, and being privatly owned by the Syufy's main company, they certainly have a certain amount of cash and assets. But they're just not big enough. You'd need a more major contendor, a Regal or Lowes or AMC.

And really you'd almost want it to be a public company, which I believe Lowes is the only one left? At least at that level. Problem is Lowes is having significant cash flow problems right now.

  6. ETA in the USA... on Irish Cinema Set to Go Digital First · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm going to respond to a few things here. Sorry if someone mentioned something on one of these points, I couldn't bring myself to read every one of the 45 posts.

Firstly, yes the projectors can take AVI inputs. DVI too probably, now a days. A few companies in the States have a few projectors scattered around, and I worked as a projectionist at one of them for a time, a few projectionists were fired for outputting a DVD player to the projector after hours and using it to watch Top Gun.

Secondly, the reason we haven't seen it wide spread in the States and probably won't for a bit yet is simply Cost. Cost to produce the movies in a digital format by the distributors, and cost to the theatres to purchase all those digitgal projectors. They are *not* cheap. For your local 24 mega-plex to replace it's 24 multi-thousand dollar projectors with a digital projector would be *well* more than the profit that theatre sees (if the theatre even manages to post a profit).

With rising costs put on the theatres by the distributors, and lowering numbers of patrons *in* the theatres, the profit margins and simple ability to make money to invest in new technology for the theatres is drastically being reduced. So until the time that *that* situation reverses itself (which I don't imagine we'll ever see) or until the digital projectors become much cheaper, we'll just have to wait.

  7. Yes and No? on Non-Technical Managers in a Technical Company? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Running a succesful company requires a number of things. Background and a strong understanding in the industry is only one of them, and not always the most important one.

If the manager is good at delegation, good at recgonizing and promoting the strenghts of his/her employees that helps.

At the end of the day the manager should be dependent on the skills and knowledge of their product anyway (even if they have a strong competant knowledge) so wether they have to pick up the background as they go or they already have it, it's almost inconsuiqential.

I went through a similar thing when I went from the "Software Programing" side of IT Healthcare Software Engineering market, to the "Clinical Analyst" side of Healtcare.

Make sure you stress the other skills and abilities you have. If you want them to hire you for a reason/skill set/purpose other than programing, give them something to hire you for. Certainly don't leave out your programing skills, but put it on the backburner, make it your back up.
"Not only can I do all these great things, but if the situation calls I do have this reservouir of experince and skill to draw from."

I stressed in my interview process and resume that I was interested in moving toward an architech / project manager / analyst role and out of a programing role. I got hired in with those expectations but also with the mutual understanding that, if need be, I could sit down and bash out some needed code. Mostly though they are simply happy to have someone with the background and understanding who can speak intelligently on the topic.

The key is just to sell yourself for whatever skill and trait you want to be "bought" for.

Whatever you emphasize and put on the surface is what gets you hired. Employers don't scratch the surface until they're alread interested.

  18. Diagnosed for 17 years and still going.. on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

I was diagnosed with ADHD (or whatever you want to call it) when I was about 6 years old. It was the only possible answer to the problems I was having, and the diagnosis was decided on after many many hours of many days of tests and observation and psychology sessions.

At that time the choice was given to me how to treat it. To try to treat it through drug usage (ritalen..a drug I can not spell), or to try to learn to cope myself. Despite my young age my parents wanted me to make the decision for myself (of course they didn't want to tell me about Santa Clause since they didn't want to lie to me....so take that as a grain of salt). Being the child I was I heard it could stunt my growth and decided not to do it. This was the best decision I ever made.

Over the last 17 years (23 now) I've been forced to face my ADHD head on and learn to cope with it. A lot of things have helped. One, creating an orginizational structure that I keep standard through everything. I force myself to live by it, keep notes in a certain way, document things the same way every time, put this here, that there, etc, etc. Because I know later on I'm not going to remember, or I'm going to be so nervious or anxious that I'm not going to be thinking, and having everything where it always is as it always is really helps.

Currently I'm a programer for a hospital software manufacturer. I find that I program my best when I'm in the middle of an ADD rush. What happens is my energy level chalks up to high high levels and I start thinking about a few things at once....turn on my headphones to act as white noise barrier between me and everything else (that is a very important step) and then I just zone. I do my best work there, it's all natural, instinctive. Done fast and done well. A part of my brain is totally focused on the code I'm writing and so long as I keep myself distracted enough that it's all I can focus on, I can really get some work done.

This is what helps the most. Another thing that helps is the flexability of my job. I can work remotely and I can work mostly whatever hours I want. So long as I get my work done and work at least 40 hours a week, I can work them wherever I want, whenever I want. So I can choose (and often do) to work at home in my home office where I can control the surrondings and situation. It's much more comfertable for me to get up every 5 minutes to let hte dog out, walk around, stretch, clear my head.

Something that many non ADD'ers don't understand is the brain process of an ADD person. It's hyper, it's frantic, it's non stop (so long as they're not drugged). They're just as smart if not often smarter and more creative than the regular person. The problem is that they can never settle down to one thing. THey keep jumping around in their head from topic to topic, idea to idea. The key is to learn to focus this. I tend to have a few different projects at one time for work. I'll have *all* of them open on my desktop at one time and I'll flip back and forth as my mind wanders from one ot the others. It's not a thing I choose to do. I don't decide "oh hey let's think about project b when I'm working on project a". It just happens so rather than fight it, or get frustrated, or take a break and stop the process, I simply switch and work on b until my mind switches back to a, or maybe over to c.

These are my recomendations anyway, I hope you figure out what works best for you.

Even if you were to, as a theatre, buy say 3 of those projectors (theatres now a day have 1 if any) you can only play digital movies in those 3. And you're not going to buy a 140k dollar projector and put it in your small houses are you? No..you're going to put it in your big one. But then your making your big theatres digital exclusive (when you hvae a digital film out).

Maybe in 10 years once the cost of projectors goes down, then we'll start to see more of them. I know boweing (sp??) is working on making a line of projectors, shipping out nearly 150 of them this year....so hopefully that kind of tech advacement will help.
