Pregnancy In Second Life
An anonymous reader writes "SF Weekly newspaper sent a (male) writer to get pregnant in Second Life, to find out how it works. The article is the first installment in a three-part series." From the piece: "For $3,500 in Lindens (about $12 US), I could buy the pregnancy kit and get knocked up. I had the cash, so I made up my mind: without much fanfare -- without a partner or even a nurse and a turkey baster -- I bought the kit and got started. I tacked on a body shape that bumped out my stomach to a late-first-trimester size, making me a little more kettle-shaped. Then I switched on the UPA, or 'ULTIMATE Pregnancy Attachment' (emphasis theirs)."
And who says only weirdos play MMOs?!
Now women *AND* men can even ruin their 'online' lives without even having to sleep with a drunk trucker!
This is new on Slashdot, but it's been around in SL for some time now. The only problem: some of the dealers were a bit shady and as a result there are big hundred post long flamewars on the forums about the whole concept. It's basically just an RP thing, although some people are apparently worried out of their mind that same sex couples will have virtual babies and get a taste for the real thing.
The whole thing sounds dumb to me, but hey, SL is a big RP environment and if people want to RP being pregnant and having a baby, that's not my concern.
I read the internet for the articles.
is to create an online Social Services.
After all, who's going to arrest parents that abuse their online children?

...is an alarm that goes off at night, forcing you to log in and take care of it.
I looked up the definition of pregnancy, and found something about intercourse. What is this strange concept? I think it has to do with a city in Pennsylvania, but fail to see the connection. Can anyone help?
Why yes, I do use Linux exclusively. Why do you ask?

And if you don't pay attention to your virtual kid at regular intervals, feed him and clean up after him ...
It's Tamagotchi all over again!
Now, if you could just script the kid's upbringing.
Seriously though, can't we somehow link this story to the one about on-line virtual hookers in WoW?
More seriously, watch out. The religious right doesn't mind if children and others are running aorund blasting each other pieces, but when you start adding sex to the game you'll have them on you like wolverines.
Hmmm... virtual Falwells.....
Three Squirrels
the hookers are also in second life. same as the pregnancies.

Online abortion clinics, right-to-second-lifers, the whole bit. Should be fun to watch (and gum up the works....)..
Toil is Stupid. Don't be Stupid.
never played second life, are you allowed to kill people? how are e-abortions treated?
The war with islam is a war on the beast
The war on terror is a war for peace
Yes, if you can make a body part that can "whisper" out loud, giving various status updates and whatnot, you can be sure that it isn't limited to mommy's tummy... There are all sorts of "naughty bit" attatchments that will happily tell you their level of moisture, rigidity, or excitement at all hours of the day.
It's the weirdest thing ever.
fwiw, that crackpot Falwell doesn't like video games at all.
I still enjoy pointing out the fact that the cheerleaders at his school violate several points of the dress code. I guess when you're cheering for Liberty U you're exempt.
120 characters for a sig? That's bloody useless.

... in an online fantasy game. We where thinking of having children but that would have severely drained my power crystals.
Note to self never mention Microsoft when posting on Slashdot!
1. Since AIDS seems to be spreading the most and the fastest in Africa, according to your reasoning that means Africa is a gay continent? Just because we _thought_ it was a gay disease, doesn't mean it is... Remember we used to think the earth was flat...
2. It is not difficult to explain this to kids, most kids think kissing is gross, it doesn't matter to them they're 2 men or 2 women or a man and a woman... It's only hard to explain a gay couple kissing in public to YOU, the one explaining, not to the kid...
3. How does giving gays the right to get married affect you? Other than that you might have to buy your lesbian neighbors a present on their wedding aniversery... But more importantly, what is this gay training/indoctrination you speak of? All I see in this "bastion of liberty" is anti-gay training/indoctrination... Is it fair for the kids to be adopted by 2 loving parents who happen to be both men or women? Of course it is, you'd rather they stayed in an orphanage? Parentless?
Here's some more news for you, heterosexual people ALSO get AIDS...
A heterosexual couple can get a homosexual child and vice versa...
Well, it's probably pointless, but at least I tried...
I hope gays affect my life more than this AC...
After seeing your post, I have done some research on this topic 'intercourse'. I find this concept quite fascinating and I wish to find out where I can subscribe to a newsletter telling me more. Thank you.
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?
Wait, what? It's not difficult to explain this to kids, but it's difficult to explain this to kids? I don't get it. What are you saying? Maybe you mean it's not hard for the kids to understand?
You'd be sorely mistaken.
I remember seeing two guys kissing in a magazine as a kid, and I didn't know why they were doing that. It seemed very weird and unnatural. I took this to my mom and asked her why two guys were kissing. I remember that she had as hard a time understanding it as I did.
I can understand and rationalize a parent teaching their kid that this is wrong and should be punished. That's probably one of the reasons for the stigma against homosexuality. And it's a good reason. You don't want your kids to grow up and to stop the evolution of your lineage. It's human nature to be selfish, just as a lot of homosexuals are being with their rights trumpeting.
What if I, or any other kid, thought it was okay to kiss others of their same sex, then? You may or may not think this is okay, but not every one thinks the same, and thus, this leads to a problem. The popularization of homosexuality means that some people may be directly influenced by it.
You make the argument on here that some kids may be influenced by violence in video games, but that's why it's rated for seventeen year olds, and their parents need to take responsibility for what their kids watch. Well, their parents can't stop a bunch of guys or girls fondling other guys and girls in public. And if it's a selfish interest to not want your kids to go and make out with people of their own gender, then so bet it, but I think a majority would have it that way; and the majority is whom defines the boundaries of society.
I can't speak for the guy that you replied to, but I don't believe he was arguing that heterosexual people are less likely to contract aids, or that they cannot contract aids. I believe that his sentiment was that homosexuality has increased the AIDS rate. Whether or not this is truthful, I don't know, but there's no reason for you to distort the argument. Yes, that is completely true, and there is nothing at all wrong with that. I think the issue is that children are heavily influenced by their parents' actions, beliefs. Look at the election predictions held every year, where kids in school are polled for whom they think they will win said election. Statistics say that these kids derive their opinions largely from those of their parents, and thus, that these predictions have been remarkably accurate in recent times.
Just harken back to your own childhood, if you had one, and try to imagine the things you did that may have been influenced by the views of your parents. Children are very influential, indeed, and I believe this is from where the grandparent's argument stems.
I don't think that's possible. He seems to have affected your life quite a lot. Nevertheless, what's with the holier-than-thou "you're an anonymous coward, haha, I'm better than you" drivel that is constantly strewn around here? Get over yourselves.
1. AIDS is spreading the most and fastest in Africa, NOW. This was not the case when AIDS first started becoming an epidemic. Wikipedia says: The AIDS epidemic was discovered June 18, 1981, when the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported a cluster of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in five gay men in Los Angeles. In the beginning, AIDS was regarded as a gay disease, not because it was a gay related disease but, because it was most evident in the gay community. Additionally, AIDS has been around long before its discovery in 1981 but, became epidemic and later pandemic at a point where homosexuals decided that it was fashionable to "come out" and flaunt their damning lifestyle. The fact that it has spread into heterosexual society, some may argue due to bisexuals, does not negate its origins. Nor does it negate the fact that a homosexual lifestyle significantly increases the risk/likelyhood of contracting AIDS.
2. Tell me this when you are Jonny's father. Oh wait, that will never happen because, your unnatural lifestyle precludes you from reproduction. You are out of the gene pool and that is a fantastic thing in my mind. But, until you have spawned that 6 year old, you don't get to decide how or about what he should be educated. This means that you aren't entitled to expose him to two men kissing or fondling in public. Don't agree? That's fine but, this is majority rule and the majority says; NO!
3. How does it affect me? Well, if you re-read the parent post, perhaps very slowly, I think that you will clearly see three very good reasons why it affects me and everyone else. Or is there some form of connection between homosexuality and illiteracy? Provided you aren't illiterate, perhaps the article about gay World of Warcraft gaming a couple of articles up on the front page of Slashdot might suggest how. It's yet another in my face example of something I don't want to see in a place I would not have expected to see it. In fact, I think that it would be reasonable to assume that Slashdot would not be a site for articles about homosexuality even though it seems that half the new Slashdotters are indeed FAGS!!!
All else aside, the subject line says it all. Homosexuals are unable to reproduce and their lifestyle choice is accelerating their decline. They may be proclaiming their gayness now but, they'll be mostly gone within a generation.
The linked article is part one of a three part series, but the other two parts haven't been written yet, so it leave me feeling that the story is a bit to premature to link to at this point.
But, then again, it could just be "duped" later, I suppose.
What I mean is that it's kind of dumb, it's all about people interacting with people, and you're gonna "raise" a damn Tamagochi? It should at least be children SLers spawning as babies...
You just got troll'd!
