Output Mouse

An anonymous reader writes "Combining unusual items together can sometimes produce interesting results. Over at MetkuMods one can find a computer mouse embedded with a cell phone display to show all sorts of information. For some people one TFT on the desktop just isn't enough."

      ...glove mouse? OK, I know it's an old idea, but now you can use it as ... a mouse... (duh), with a display on the back of your hand.

      Obviously, the mouse isn't for actual use.

      I think these mashups have just gone too far, but I like the idea of LCDs in keyboards and am really looking forward to the Optimus when it arrives.

      The first page of the article made me think it was just a bad photoshop job, but he did end up with a nice mouse.
      It ends up with a good color scheme at the end and would consider getting a normal one (sans screen) given half a chance.

      hah, me too, and I'm even more waiting for the plugin that will make Vim control the keyboard and help me find laTeX math symbols in a fast way.

      By the way, I just checked the site and the 3-key pad seems delayed again, till september 2006. I guess "end 2006" for the big one is still a bit optimistic.

      But in the mean time that we're waiting, they seem to have introduced a cool pointy mouse and funny computer-related pins for in the office

      Actually they have some stuff that would really make a good addition to the thinkgeek offers.

      Like so many mods: It's as awesome as it is useless!

      The mouse, I mean. Not a transparent hand. I can think of some ways that'd be useful. Especially if it was really transparent. But even if it just showed all the bones and muscles and blood vessels, you could still gross people out.

      Actually, why not add a thermometer (thermal sensor) to the palm rest of the mouse. Maybe have it sense when a hand is on it and display the pointer only then, hiding the pointer otherwise?

      You've never touched your mothers hands have you? If they're anything like my moms or many other women I know, they're often ice cold!

      Though, the mouse could probably detect a temperature change of any sudden sort.

    This is a fantastic mod, and I can see it could have some uses.
    There might even be enough space to display slashdot RSS... that is if my shared IP didn't keep getting banned.
    I can see it being used as a Mail check screen.
    Being the tech savvy people we are, I think it's safe to say we use the keyboard over the mouse if at all possible.
    The only real concern I have is that the screen is on the back. Now if you could put one on each side, that would be cool. You would be able to see at least one of the screens then.
    An even better design would be to make a completely transparent mouse (glass would be cool), and use some sort of 3d projection system to display an image in the shell. You could display a 3d hovering clock in the mouse that way.

      the small case on the left might belong to the monitor, I remember a monitor with external case being issues some times ago, just don't remember which :(

      Or it's simply part of his speaker system.

    We all (gasp!) have to step away from the computer now and then. If something demanded your attention, like a new email or IM, this mouse could display the specifics for you while using negligible power. This caller-id-like function could allow you to glance deskward and see the culprit's IM avatar or email address without even breaking the screensaver. It's a phone screen, why not use it like one?

      That would be very useful, especially in a wireless version. Even though you might not be able to display things such as movies due to low data rate, you could have something like a list of people who are trying to contact you through IM programs.

      It's a phone screen, why not use it like one?

      Better yet, why not just use the screen that's already on your phone for this?

      It should be fairly trivial to design a system that sends an SMS/MMS message to your cell phone upon some computer event.

    Anyone figure out the costs of all this? The website listed in the article used the abbreviation Kr. for currency and I thought that might be the Krone but 40 bucks for the controller card and the screen sounds a bit cheaper than I expected.

    If it were really that cheap I'd love to get a couple and velcro them to the side of my monitor for stuff like ventrillo or irc output.

    Is it just me, or has the Optimus been coming out "end of this year" for several years now? Those photos look suspiciously like ones that I'm sure I've seen before, and not recently either.

    I just hope it comes out with a predefined keymap for Duke Nukem Forever...

      I really like the idea. Imagine it as a feedback in games... Or with this skip to default feature... I do not think it would be too tricky. But I do not know how could we create enough grip to move your hands too.

    Y'know, when I hear the term "Output Mouse", I'm expecting the opposite of an input mouse; that is, the computer issues commands to move the mouse and it does so, taking your hand with it. And output clicks are handled by poking you in the fingers or thumb. Scroll wheel still needs work.

    This just sounds like an LCD display duct-taped onto a mouse by comparison.
