Gears of War Ships November 12th

Kotaku is reporting that Epic has confirmed a November 12th retail date for Gears of War, the highly anticipated shooter for the Xbox 360. This announcement confirms a date found by individuals participating in a viral marketing campaign via Xbox Live. From the announcement: "'Our vision is to deliver a one-two punch of cinematic action paired with a thrilling and compelling interactive experience,' said Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer at Epic. 'With Gears of War we've created a title that will place gamers directly in the shadows of a ravaged world, surrounded by the beautiful remnants of a destroyed city and the horrific dangers that hide in the rubble.'"

Why is it console players think their consoles are more powerful than computers? My desktop which I built 3 and a half years ago for just under $1,000 has much better graphical and processing power than the 360 (I spent $135 on a new graphics card last winter). Why do I like gaming on a desktop? Well, aside from the better graphics/physics allowed; one reason is loading time! Consoles go "oh oh optical disk reading yeah oh so good yeah uh uhhhh"... my computer goes "Go 10,000 rpm raptors, read that data!". Control -- yes, you CAN hook up a standard 103-key keyboard and a crappy mouse to a 360... but I have a nice desktop keyboard and mouse -- efficient buttons, macro-enabled, just plain AWESOME.

Game controllers are great for action/arcade style games... but for FPS and RTS games, extreme precision is needed -- the kind of precision that is impossible with a gamepad. Auto-aim is a ridiculous concept that exists because console controls are so sub-par at controlling First Person Shooters.

Now for the meat of the point -- computers are superior to consoles in power (even budget-build computers). Look at Halo (probably the game you're referring to when you say that computers suck because a console FPS outsold a couple PC FPS games -- console FPS games do NOT "routinely" sell out PC games, hell, there aren't half as many FPS games for the console as their are for PC) -- originally slated to be a PC/Mac game, MS bought Bungie and said "Hey, that awesome Halo game you're developing? You're going to throw it away it and rebuild it half as good as it was before for our upcoming Xbox gaming system"... the result? Many things were scrapped because consoles can not perform as well as their PC cousins (even elements they thought would still be possible weren't -- look at the flamethrower [you can obtain it in Xbox using noclip hacks]), when they ported the game over to PC, it was beautiful (better graphics, better multiplayer, features impossible with the xbox [like the flamethrower]).

Consoles are INFERIOR to computers -- you have to get that through your head. Now, all that said, I still play consoles -- because some games types work so well with consoles (Smash Brothers Melee -- you couldn't have a game like that be as fun on a PC).

We then switched over to a Dell PC to complete the first day's testing (Yes, MS uses Dell. Dont ask me to explain because frankly I'm at a loss). The PC locked three times requiring a hard reboot and crashed to blue screen twice. When I managed to get to a point past the initial story sequence at the beginning I noticed some serious "issues" once the wow factor wore off (keep in mind I wrapped up testing last month). Yet more lockups requiring some work on the console (GoW uses Unreal Tournament cheatcodes just so you know!), texture flickering, disappearing scenery, clipping and CPU overheat. I managed to get past an area in which several enemies were firing down at me from a balcony by shooting through a disappearing conrete balcony floor with a pistol. While I am sure (err, hope) these errors will be fixed by November, the game itself was in its final stages of development and from what I saw there was little gameplay tweaking left to do. The cover system is clunky and buggy. You have to hold down the White Button to enter the cover selection menu where you are left standing and unable to control movement or weapons to choose what type of stance you want to take and how you want to get there. For example you can roll into cover, jump into cover, dodge to cover or even sprint between objects to get to the covering object you want. Pretty cool, but a title cannot ride that gimmick alone. At the beginning of the first level you are given very vague orders which amounts to "This place is tearing itself apart! Run!" You have to assume the place you are running to is through the open doors arranged in front of you and in fact that is how the rest of the level plays out: running through the open doors and killing everything in your way until you get to the evac point. After which you are dropped into another "hallway" and the formula repeats. The scenery is interesting and somewhat destructable. You can blow the corners off certain concrete blocks or shoot some material off marble pillars but you can never completely destroy anything since the environment around you has a Roman Gothic feel. If you were able to shoot out those pillars the roof would cave in and the game is not designed to take that into account. Your weapons are the FPS standard: Knife, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Machine Gun, Weird Energy Weapon, Rocket Launcher, BFG. There are squad members who follow you around but they serve no purpose. At one point I had 5 soldiers in my squad (halfway thru the first level you come up to a crashed dropship and link with the survivors) and all of them took cover and stayed there without making an attempt to fire at the enemy. The player is not informed of locations where your squad will for some reason not follow. The game requires the player to take certain locations solo commando style and your squad will stand behind a wall and refuse to respond to your orders. Just as well since they are actually more of a problem by taking up good cover that you could use. The environments are littered with weapons that you cannot pick up. Turrets and gun emplacements are usable only for a short period of time and then cannot be used. Not because of lack of ammo, but simply because the game decides that you should move into the next area. You remember those old side scrolling shooters that forced you to move ahead or risk being PUSHED forward by the side of the screen? GoW is very similar. While the scenery is nice to look at, it is all vanilla. Concrete and asphalt with some marble pillars. Also, the character models are straight out of Unreal 2: The Awakening. Anyone who has played it will immediately see that the lead character modeler was hired for GoW.
