Peter Jackson Talks the Halo Movie

Via Kotaku, an interview on Ain't It Cool News with Peter Jackson talking about the in-conception Halo Movie. From the article: "QUINT: Now, there's no reason on Earth shouldn't easily and faithfully be adapted into a PG-13 movie. However, do you anticipate there being a harder cut considering how gruesome the Flood aspect of the story is? PETER JACKSON: That's interesting... It's something, I must admit, that's not a conversation I've had with anybody yet. It's a conversation that I'm sure will happen. Look, the reality of the budget is that I would imagine the studio are going to be pretty insistent on a PG-13, which, as you say, is certainly not an impossible thing pull off."

If anyone can pull this off, it might be Peter Jackson. However, I spent a ton of time with Halo in the development of the Macintosh port (alpha, beta and QA) of Halo and I'll tell you that while it has a better storyline than most of the other games out there, it's going to be a bit of a stretch to turn it into a movie. There are some fundamental themes that played through Halo (and it's ethereal predecessor Marathon) that lend the story to development into a movie. I just hope that they hire a good set of writers to help suspend disbelief. Yo Peter, atmostphere and effects can only take you so far (Star Wars prequels). If you spend your time to do this, please do it right.

How can you say Davy Jones (http://www.paloaltoonline.com/photos/deadmansches t.jpg) doesn't have a face? The whole point of that effect was that he's covered in CGI and you can still see his eyes and lips conveying the subtleties of emotion that we expect to see from actors. That is the point which I guess you missed entirely.

People have a hardwired emotional reaction to faces. Without showing faces, its hard to convey a character's emotions. Even if the character's face is covered in tentacles, the same still holds.

V (http://joeblade.com/images/sidebars/v-for-vendett a.jpg)is a much more relevant case because his face doesn't change to convey emotion. However, it is still a face with eyes, nose, mouth and lips. It gives people something to attach to. It satisfies that basic part of our brain that needs to see those items in order to form an emotional attachment. And it does more than that - the sly but benign grin on the mask conveys the character's nature as a devilish rogue out to save the world.

The maker of a Halo movie will have a hard time creating a similar emotional attachment without showing the lead character's face. This is especially true if the aliens do have faces. It's psychological and would be very difficult for the writers and would just be too risky for a Hollywood movie. I'm not saying it can't or shouldn't be done. I'm saying it is difficult and risky and those are two things big Hollywood studios avoid like the plague.

I'll give you great odds if you want to lay money that the studios will cater to Halo fanatics by never showing MC's face, vs. catering to everyone else by showing it.

With Samus Aran you at least got the suprise that shes actually a girl, but again Master Chief? Whats so special about him and his face that makes it important to keep it undercover? Compare that to Halo, where there's actually a point made about it. Beginning of Halo 2:
CHIEF: I thought you said there weren't going to be any cameras.
JOHNSON: And I thought you said you were going to wear something nice!

      Somewhat later:
Cortana (cocking her head): You look nice!
      CHIEF and JOHNSON: Thank you!

It's a source of humor, it says something about his character, and he would probably be a somewhat different character without his helmet. In contrast, the Doom guy from Doom 1 wasn't a character -- he was really only a character in Quake 3 and Doom 3, and the Quake 3 Doom Guy is hardly worth mentioning.

I guess it's kind of like Chocolat -- I think it was Chocolat -- some movie where the main characters share a fetish that's never actually explicitly mentioned. Between Ebert and whoever else he was working on, one didn't like it because he thought it was cheap and unfair not to say what it was, and the other liked it because anything would've been disappointing. I think this is the real problem -- any face you put on the Chief will be disappointing. Certainly, no ordinary Marine will ever see it. Half of their morale comes from watching the Chief walk onto the field, a living legend, a giant monster who happens to be on their side -- so of course, it's all the more fuel for rumors and legend if he never takes off his helmet.

For those that have already read them, the 4th in the series is coming out in November, and is written by Eric Nylund, who wrote The Fall of Reach and First Strike: http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Ghosts-Eric-S-Nylund/dp /0765315688/sr=8-1/qid=1158355563/ref=pd_bbs_1/102 -4060738-4988146?ie=UTF8&s=books

    Definitely looking forward to it!

Yes, Red Vs. Blue already captured the shiny armor effects on film.

Same here. I just finished the latest book a couple of weeks ago.

I read the first part of the interview, but it seems like Jackson is way too early in the process to have anything beyond, "This would be really cool."

I think the movie should draw from the book, and the events of the game should be the last 1/3 of the movie. To be honest, the events of the movie are far too little to make a whole 2 hour movie. The book, which described the events leading up to the game, was not bad though. That would format the movie more like 'Conan', with the first half of the movie the 'growing up' period of the protagonist.

Also, The Chief wasn't so taciturn in the book.
