Wikipedia Closes Wii, PS3, Sony Entries
GameSpot reports that Wikipedia has closed the next-gen console entries because of nigh-onto constant defacement from angry fanbois. From the article: "Last week the complete Nintendo company page was replaced with the phrase "Nintendo Sucks!!!!!!!!!" briefly before the Web site reloaded the original entry. Previous vandalism efforts include someone doodling on a Hitler moustache and horns on the photograph for the entry for Bill Gates, and the sentence "Microsoft is Zomg T3h Suck0r!!!!!!" briefly replacing the computer software company's page. All of the next-generation consoles make it into the company's top 40 list of most revised pages, with the Nintendo Wii at number 10 (12,780 revisions), the PS3 at number 21 (9,894 revisions), and the Xbox 360 at 25 (9,481 revisions.) Interestingly, the Wii seems to attract more conflicts of opinion on the site than the subjects of Scientology (8,475 revisions), God (7,537 revisions), and even Britney Spears (9,886 revisions.)"
Never underestimate the voracity of fanbois.

More scratches on the cave wall, thanks be to anonymity.

I think I know what console the tabloid writers are going to get.
I'm not sure how this is news. Anonymous and very new users can't edit the entries, but all accounts older than 4 days can, so the articles are still updated almost as fast as before. And numerous pages are semi-protected every day as vandalism flares up and dies down. Judging by semi-protection only, the consoles aren't any worse off than Lucille Ball, Tundra, or Michelangelo...
It's been like this for some weeks now, the PS3 for longer then Wii.
That those idiots went bragging to their friends that they hacked a site.

This is concrete proof that the Enyclopedia Brittanica is superior. They have exactly zero revisions to their Wii page! No vandalism in sight. They really have their priorities straight.

1 in 3 stories by Zonk boil down to:
OMG Sony is teh suxors! (the rest seem to be usless top ten lists these days)
1 in 4 Slashdot stories boil down to:
OMG Micro$oft is teh suxors
or
OMG GW is teh suxors
"Vandals strike various Wikipedia articles. Wikipedia administrators act to prevent vandalism. Slashdot news at 11!"
Seriously. How the hell is this newsworthy? Random vandalism/reverts/locks are a fact of WP, and are far from anything important or new.
They semi-protected three articles. This happens all the time, why the fuck is it on Slashdot?

I mean, honestly - why the hell do people think consoles need their loyalty? The companies behind them are out to make cash, which is what corporations do. They have their own marketing budget, people paid loads of cash to sell games and consoles and so forth. And before anyone mentions 'viral marketing', this kind of crap would only serve to put me off buying a console.
I find it disheartening that young gamers feel the need to find a single console and lock onto it with a religious fervor. We're all gamers, we all enjoy the same hobby, but a large part of the community spends its time decrying everyone else.
The only reason I can think of that this happens, immaturity aside, is that young gamers must rely on their parents to buy consoles and their parents probably limit them to one console of choice because of price. This may give the kid a need to prove to himself and others that he got the very best console possible and made the best decision, because if he didn't make the best decision he'll never be able to buy the other console(s) and fix the problem.
Too bad they can't just relax and enjoy the different experiences offered by all the consoles.
...is because the idiots vandalising the Wikipedia entries are probably all Slashdot readers. Yes, I am talking to YOU! Grow up. The rest of the Internets are not amused.
They hate losers who buy what?-only-$250?-that-shit-MUST-suck Wii or already-one-year-old XBox360 junk!!!
THEY HATE YOU!!!! You will burn in HELL!!!1111!!!!11
There are many more news articles worth posting here. This isn't even news. Who's cock gets sucked to pass these articles through?
So, does this mean that the Nintendo Wii population has not tripled in the last six months?
Wikipedia is excellent for some content but sucks for other. Many pages are bloated with fanboyish crap (+/=useless details) while they miss some important facts and - often - lack any critical approach ("bad side" of story often gets deleted by fans). While it can be very useful and condensed source of information, Wikipedia should not be only source of information, especially for stuff of wide (non-expert) interest.
... we all know Amiga still r0x0rs, and Atari sucks0rs, w00t!
Sad, sad, sad...
Stroller.
...that angry console fanbois are actually pretty retarded...and very angry...about shit that doesn't actually matter...
:/
Seriously guys, go and get angry about something WORTH getting angry about
Other platforms decrease the amount of games available by taking developer mindshare, and introduces the risk that your chosen platform might become unprofitable and discontinued. So, in a very real sense, each platform decreases the value of all the other platforms. Once you choose one, it is in your interests to promote it.
Always wanting to defend the system they worship, and blasting down the other systems. Ex: "GCN and PS2 are kiddie. X-Box the way to go." or "Nintendo is best, hands down. Sony, MS and 3rd parties can all rot in hell." or "Sony is KING! Nintendo and Microsoft sucks." I'll never, ever, understand them. Silly fanboys.
Now I love Wikipedia and think it represents the future of... stuff, and all, and I definitely think it's a good and legitimate place to do research, but this quote implies that those fears went away. If fact, the number or people vocalizing these fears have been growing since the beginning.
Property is theft.
The entries weren't "closed", they were "semi-protected". From the headline one might assume the entries had been withdrawn. That would be notable, but restricting editing to registered users isn't very dramatic, so some idiot decided to sex up the story.
It makes it sound as if the pages were removed. They aren't, they were locked to editing.
This just proves that PC gaming is superior.
With the PS3 launch Sony has left the door open for Nintendo to sweep this generation but Nintendo must follow up. For all of its flaws Sony has put together a nice piece of hardware in the PS3. If Sony had followed up with a good price point and a strong launch I have no doubt that they would have maintained thier lead in this generation. Unfortunatly for them they have misstepped. The combination of a high price point and tight supply will keep Sony from moving enough units to take a clear lead early in the consol race. This gives Nintendo the chance to show the world that this is the DS vs PSP all over again. When the DS came out people were interested in it but skittish because it was something there were unfamiliare with. Sony could have won right here but they misjudged. The PSP was expensive and, because of an LCD shortage, Sony could not make enough units. Both the PSP and DS languished. With no killer apps on either side there was nothing to drive sales. Then, Nintendo cane out with Nintendogs and everything just clicked. It was that simple game that brought home the whole Idea of the DS. Momentum from Nintendogs drove sales of the DS which, in turn, drove sales of other software. Because the DS was simpler to make then the PSP Nintendo was able to ramp up production and they ran with it. Now the DS is outselling the PSP 5:1 in Japan. Will we see the same thing happen with the Wii VS PS3? That depends on Nintendo. It looks like high price and production problems will keep the PS3 at bay for at least 6 months. If Nintendo can come up with the killer app they can gain the momentum. With the Wii being much easier to produce Nintendo can saturate the market and take the momentum away from Sony. If Sony looses momentum it becomes very hard to justify the $250 price difference and the market will fall to Nintendo. That is only one possible outcome though. If the Killer app fails to materialize, Sony ramps up production, and they are aggresive with price cuts Sony will probably run away with the market again. If Both Nintendo and Sony flounder we may end up with no clear winner this generation. But what about Microsoft? At this point it is very unlikely that Microsoft will pull off an upset. Here is why. Microsoft is positioned uncomfortably as the middle man. Not as powerful and sexy and the PS3 and not as affordable and invoative as the Wii. Any killer app Microsoft comes up with can be pushed onto the PS3 as well. On top of that, both the PS3 and the Xbox360 do not bring anything new to the table. Although the games look better they have not been intorducing anything fundementally new. As such it is becoming more and more difficult to create that one hit game. Microsoft is also still having problems with the Japaneese market. There is no way that then can push ahead of Sony without a significant presence in the second larget Video game market.
The number of semi-protected entries has tripled in the last six months.
Help poke pirates in the eyepatch, arr.
IMHO the absolute BEST scenario would be if ALL of the next gen consoles rocked. If they were all spectacular and all had their own unique feature that adds to the world of gaming. This would encourage them all to work even harder to out-compete eachother for the next round. In then end, benefiting us all. Suppose one of them ends up killing all others by a huge margin. This will stifle competition- the top dog will get lazy and won't innovate so well for their next gen, and the losers won't have the money to innovate like crazy for the next round.
All in all- closer competition benefits all gamers. These fanbois defacing the wikipedia site are just idiots.
By the way, anyone know which console(s) Resident Evil 5 will be officially released on? RE4 was fabulous, can't wait for the next one.
