And, what are we going to do? The US military is tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan, and even if they weren't, getting to Georgia isn't going to be easy. The Euros don't have the balls to do anything meaningful to their largest energy supplier. So, what do you suggest? WWIII?
This is a larger part of a regional conflict that includes Chechnia. There are layers of ethnic hatred in the region that go back a long way and I find it hard to believe anyone's side of the story. This is a tragedy, but at this point the best thing to do is just to get the shooting to stop.
I just saw a blurb in the news about how US currency has the most cocaine out of all currency tested. Handle your average bill (in the US) and you'll have trace amounts of blow on your fingers for sure.
Honest question about Hawking Radiation - how do we know it really exists? As far as I know we've never directly observed a black hole and we've certainly never created one in the lab, so where is the experimental evidence to support it? Shouldn't you say that we THINK Hawking Radiation would destroy said black hole?
I used to play and love the Marathon series by Bungie because they actually used color. Many of the environments were actually interesting to look at and enhanced the game play and immersion - at least for me. I couldn't really get into the darkness of the id games.
Bungie more or less kept the same use of color in the Halo series I think.
Let's see - this is about a mysterious case involving weaponized anthrax that had to be developed by someone with pretty specific technical knowledge. Futhermore, it involves the FBI, DOD biological weapons labs, conspiracy theories, etc. Seems to me to be pretty geeky.
Look, this is a straw man argument. If you NEED to drive more than the range of an electric car, don't get one, get a hybrid. For suburban and urban car owners, an electric car is a viable alternative. I'm married and my wife works less than five miles away. An electric car would be fantastic for her needs, and we have two cars anyway, so we have a hybrid for long trips. We may come to a time when your 350 mile trip is fantastically expensive as well.
Let's also be clear that the need to put humans in space seems not so obvious any more. We have fleets of robots exploring other planets with less cost and less risk. To me, human exploration of space at this time seems like a waste. Right now the human space program seems more like a corporate boondoggle than anything else. Of course it is over budget, that is the whole point - to spend a lot of taxpayer money!
With robots you can take more risk and spend more money. And, I'm not saying that humans shouldn't go into space, it just seems like right now we should be focused on exploration, which is better served with robots.
I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but back when my wife and I first bought a computer together, we got an ME box from Dell. I had a mac and a red hat pc, so it was my first Windows machine - and it worked well enough. It did what we needed it to do. So, I agree with you. Vista may suck, but for the average user, it will probably work fine. And, if you are buying a new machine now, you'll probably have the hardware to handle it.
If and when I get a new Windows box, I'll just take Vista. If I want to play with operating systems, I have linux.
Don't THEY have the source code, since the kernel is free? How about a simple diff? Seems to me that if a malicious programmer is bothering to grep the changelog, just looking at the code changes isn't THAT much of a stretch? If Linux is "free" as in speech, keep it that way.
While you may or may not like WOW, I feel pretty certain that Blizzard has generally put out pretty good games, in terms of both quality of the game itself and the stability. I recently popped Diablo II back into my machine and noticed that it had recently been patched.
And, if there is one thing that both game and movie companies know it is that nothing sells like a sequel. Take a hit game or movie and make a new one based off of the old one and you are pretty much going to make MORE. So don't blame for profit companies for doing this - blame the folks who buy the various part II's and III's. I'll admit I am looking forward to Diablo III...
I also think it is interesting that Lori Drew has only been CHARGED with this crime. She has every opportunity to defend herself in court and be judged by a jury of her peers. This is the process. Some DA probably spent months trying to figure out SOMETHING to charge her with, only to come up with this.
Well, except for the fact that the RIAA is controlled by four large multi-national firms. EMI is British, Universal is owned by Vivendi, a French company, the head of Warner music is Canadian and Sony BMG is about as multi-national as you'll find anywhere. If anything, the RIAA and the companies that control it are trying to do this everywhere. US politicians are going along for the ride, but so are governments all over the world.
I have a seven digit PIN on my Wells Fargo card. I like the longer length, but when I was in Spain, I couldn't use the card because Wells Fargo told me that European ATMs only take four digit pins. Is this still true? Four digits doesn't seem like much to me.
If I remember, the PS2 launched right smack in the middle of the dot com era as well. There were many a young geek flush with internet dollars willing to drop a couple hundred on a game machine.
That Sony needs to flood Slashdot with turfers like you just to generate some PR seems a good indication that they aren't doing that well. Maybe they are doing great, but I think both the PS3 and PSP have not sold like they expected.
Technically neither Visa nor MasterCard is a for profit business. It looks like that is changing, but for most of their history both companies were just a service provider to the various banks that issued credit cards. So it wasn't Visa chasing down the money, it was the bank that issued the card that was.
Hate to break this to you, but I believe Marathon 2 or Marathon Infinity had the bad guys fighting it out with each other. If you have played Bungie's earlier FPS games, Halo is kind of just a shiny version, with simpler levels. Still enjoyed it though.
Back when I was single and lived in my own apartment, I had an N64. I enjoyed 007 and Perfect Dark, and thought life was good. Then, a buddy of mine came over for some drinks and started giving me a hard time about my choice of toys. He was a Playstation guy and thought his toy was much better than mine. I was sort of shocked that anyone would actually care what my choice of game console was... It has gotten worse though...
Dude, you can memorize my banking information all you want. However, if you fucking take money from me without authorization, that is theft and is illegal pretty much everywhere. Your stupid rant about personal responsibility is sadly misplaced - how about not trying to rip people off?
If you like Jazz, KCSM (91.1) in the SF Bay Area is fantastic. They also offer webcasts on kcsm.org. The station is run on a shoestring, but they do wonderful stuff.
I worked in India in 1992. The company I was working for sent me over there to work with Indian programmers on a product we were trying to sell in the US. I went over on a tourist visa, which expired in six months. My boss bribed a customs official $100 to extend my visa, no questions asked, and he did. This was pretty common pratice.
India may be pretty different now, but I doubt the corruption levels are down to "US" levels - not that we don't have tons of corruption here.
So, when the new version comes out, your old version suddenly becomes unwatchable? Seems to be that whatever content you had is still there. The problem isn't that Hollywood does this, the problem is that people reward them by buying the stuff.
When I went to college, they allowed only scores over 4 and a max of something like 12 credits, total. Also, it was nearly impossible to get into all the courses you needed, due to overcrowding. Couldn't do this at Cal Poly SLO, that's for sure.

Or maybe the Sears Catalog...

Don't like it - don't read it.

To quote the Simpsons: We have reached the limits of what anal probing can teach us!
